It followed me home (Part 2)

As mentioned in crosscut saw thread, Craigslist find:

I like your saw Fmont Fmont . That supplemental handle is beautiful!
I hope you can find a faint etch, put some lineage to your saw.
Perhaps the supplemental handle hardware will offer a clue...perhaps the supplemental handle itself will have a name hidden.
Start high on the grit when cleaning the blade.
Great find!!

Thanks! The woman said it was her grandfather's. I don't think it's been used since the last time it was filed, it's sharp with two r's. I haven't even really had a good chance to look at it yet.

I was surprised to find this old Collins way out West here in Oregon, especially on what appears to be it's original handle. I dont typically get too excited about claw hammers, but seeing the Legitimus logo made it a no brainer.

Any other Collins hammers out there? There's one identical to this on the 'bay right now for stupid money, but I can't imagine they are that rare.

I have not come across a Legitimus Framers type hammer...any claw hammer before.
My experience does not make that rare but in my opinion that's wicked cool!
I agree a no brainer man! Excellent score:cool:

You don't get excited about claw hammers ?
Well I sure do, and this one's a real beauty.

I dumped $42 on this 00 cut Italian inox file from grobet.

At 72 HRC it should last a good long while! I'll let you fellas know how it holds up. I also purchased this (new Orleans pattern?) pattern broad axe from a guy off etsy. Weighs #8-4.5oz and measures 12" heel to toe. 15571703749126790278284063561862.jpg

It does have a curve between the heel and toe but is flat from poll to bit. Rings like a beauty! Anyway it's a beautiful day here so I'm gonna go do some outdoorsy stuff!. See ya's later!

Picked up this Campbell's XXX hammer poll axe yesterday. Made in Saint John, NB not far from me. The markings aren't very legible, but I plan on hanging and using this axe. I've been looking for one with an intact hammer for a good price. I believe this is about as small as they made these hammer poll axes at just over 3 lbs.

I thought a few here would be interested to see that it is wedge shaped, reminiscent of a Maine wedge pattern. From what I've read, Campbell's was co-founded by a Mainer named Josiah Fowler in the 1860s. I don't know about the origins of the wedge shape in Maine, but I wonder if Mr. Fowler was drawing on his Maine roots with this design.

Bigger than it looked at first. I love how it shows its construction.

Another from the Not Sure What I Have Here but Bigger is Better file.

Compared to a 4lb Hults. Yes, it is mushroomed but not too much

It looks like a rafting / construction pattern.
It's got a Collins legitimus stamp, but whether or not it's authentic I couldn't say since the legitimus line was often faked.
