It followed me home (Part 2)

That bench top is going to prove use full for sure. Been looking for a real bargain on one for ages.

I had been looking for a workbench for a really long time when I saw the ad online, gave the seller a call, turned out to be my mothers cousin, he gave it to me for free! :D On the way home I stopped by a flea market and picket up them tools

It got shipped to me home and much quicker than expected. Yeah, I purchased this off that auction site for $20 + $6 shipping and I wasn't even drunk. Its not normal for me to spend so much on an axe head but I figured $26 for an 8" long red axe head that I could just make out the words True Temper Flint Edge Kelly Works under the red paint was worth the $$$. It looked like a rafting axe from the photos on the site but the round egdes on the poll had me wondering. I was encouraged by the untouched looks of the bit.

My son brought it in from the mail box this evening. This thing is a beast! I will have to get this thing on a scale but it's got to be all of 5lbs.

I am thinking I will remove the paint and soak this one in vinegar. I want to see hardened line/s on it. Who knows, maybe I will polish this one up? Its most definitely going on a straight haft and will be employed to do its fair share of splitting.

Just recieved this beauty, stamped Gefle Vapen on one side. Man, am I happy or what! Payed $3 for it! I can't read the other stamp but that should work itself out after a vinegar bath.

That would sure look nice as a companion to my great grandfather's Finnish broad axe. I am jealous, nice score.

The picture link appears broken for me but I bet it's cool aikonen.

So, I was out today and came across this axe:

I’ve read that there was a large tool company consolidation in the 1890’s – 1920’s (noted in link to yesteryear). What is your take on this one? It very well could have read Glassport PA under the mark but it is worn smooth under the markings – in fact, part of the AmericanAx logo is worn clean on the lower portions. It caught my eye.

The guy who sold it to me asked $20 and then I showed him the base of the handle was marked $4. I’m assuming that is what he paid as he became a bit sheepish immediately. He gave me a small break but the head had the price marked in sharpie on both sides and it looked like the previous owner had drawn on it with plans to cut it up into “something else” as well.

Is this a Connecticut pattern or something close and just worn down? The triangle mark on it – is that a maker’s mark of some sort or a weird “wear” mark from use? Just curious as I have a large hewing axe with similar triangle markings. Tool mark maybe.

I like the shape of it. The short handle is interesting. Don’t know if it is original, original cut down some, from another axe (handle marked $4 and the head $20 could mean it was pieced together), or what the shop owner paid.

Have not tested the steel but I did run a power drill with a steel brush on it to remove the pen marks.

Found some info on yesteryeartools but don’t see much on the physical markings of AmericanAx axes.

Very nice find. Yes it is a Connecticut pattern. American Axe & Tool made a quality axe. I believe they were purchased by Kelly.

Went over to my grandpa's place to fix a bad valve and went home with these. Not bad considering that I happily do my parents and grandparents plumbing for free.

Found these on Saturday at the new antique store that opened last week here in town. Double bit plumb and the other is a diamond edge.

Hey, it's not what he paid but what it's worth! ;) Just ribbing you, but he did go find it for you, right? Still a deal, and a very nice find. That's a roughly $40-45 eBay item. I have a carpenter hatchet with the same logo.

That's a dandy! I'd call it a rafting pattern. You got a good deal.

This one arrived last week. I notice something interesting about the stamp.

It had some mushrooming on the poll. One side more than the other. Wrapped in duct tape, it got filed.

It looks like red epoxy in the eye. Probably makes it newer? Someone else did the removal.
I mixed a capful of white vinegar and put in 4 drops of bluing agent. Never tried it before, not sure about how I feel about it, but it helps to blend my scraping some.

Think once it is sharpened and hung it will be a user.

Weighs 3lbs 4.5oz.

I've never seen a Jersey with epoxy, and the logo is usually on the other side. An odd duck.

I don't know if this is allowed in this tread, someone give me a heads up if it isn't.
Earlier in this tread I posted a picture of a workbench that I got from my mothers cousin. Today he gave me a call and said he had some things for me.

I'm glad I gave him a visit! The jointer sure will help flattening axe handle stock materials!

I absolutely love the handle on this axe!! I do believe it's coated with some varnish, but the ergos are amazing!
