It followed me home

Plumb hatchet. Very nice design. Got it for a dollar. Unfortunately there's some significant cracks in the head near the eye and the alignment is a little crooked. Still a cool little piece though.

That's an awesome shaped head. And the bit looks fairly fresh. Too bad about the cracks. Sometimes if an axe is left outside and the handle becomes soaked by rain it can split the eye when hit by a sudden hard freeze. Water don't stop for nuthin'.

If you know a buddy with a welder it can still be saved. Welding heat at the eye won't travel to the bit if you're careful and quick.

Couple new members to Team Operator -

Mann Edge Knot Klipper and a Norlund - both boys size - look at that handle on the Knot Klipper - what a bend!

Thanks, I just might try that actually.

That's sweet. It's well slimmed, too. And I bet the swell is almost a perfect circle on the end. I have one vintage handle like that. It's very comfortable.

Heck, all 3 of those have nice handles. Awesome scores!

Operator, I bet you're gonna LOVE that Knot Klipper. Mine is a bit more beat and sharpened back to be a perfect firewood splitter - I was swinging it today. What a sweet, sweet, axe.

It followed me home! After I gave it my address...
Got this off the 'bay, you fellas prolly saw it.
Interesting piece and very little info searchable online, probably because the marking is so generic.
This appears to be the original haft, also marked U.S. The paint is a recent refurb job, but I think references the original. Cheeks are slightly convex, and the bit is thick - easily fixed. It came sharp. I think I paid more for shipping than for the piece itself. The head can't weigh more than a pound - it's nice and small. Lighter than the Husqy hatchet I picked up recently. And BTW, that decides it: the husqy goes on a boy's axe handle next. The head looks unused except for the cheek surfaces under the paint. The poll is polished and untouched. I wonder if these were hardened? The haft clear took some hits just under the head in the usual spot, so it's not pristine. There are vague references that suggest this could be WW1 or WW2... no idea myself.

I love the haft, but wish it was new. Guess I'll use it until it loosens up.

I really like the original haft. Condition looks to be very good, though I could have done without the paint. I'd bet the poll isn't hardened. For one thing it was almost never done. And hardened steel is much harder to polish, so they would have had to take the time to harden it and then take the extra time necessary to polish it.

I think it's a great piece. You done good.

Looks like it is a military issue hatchet. The U.S. stamp is a clear indication of this. I'm surprised that a makers maker isn't visible under the U.S. stamp. I have a few in my collection.

I'll work on the edge this weekend and get a feel for the steel. If it's any good it will be a user, which is what I bought it for anyway. I'm not sure it makes economic sense to make fakes that sell for $12. The haft appears to be correct given the few pictures I was able to turn up online.

Yet another good day at the flea market. This time I got an unmarked Connecticut--but it does have the Kelly-type ridges inside the eye--and a near mint Collins hudson bay.

Here they are rough.

I have a friend with a shop - surplus, guns, knives, gear and whatnot. I've known him since he opened about 26 years ago.

Until recently, I used to give him every Saturday for all that time. Usually just took in some gadget or gear, or worked something off.

He does a lot of trading, sometimes he'd get something right up my alley and hang on to it for me. Usually always lets me have things at his cost.

I haven't been able to go in every Saturday for a couple years, other things need my time. But I do go in from time to time, and he still "holds" stuff for me.

Last visit was nice, he got a few things he knew I'd like;

A Council Velvicut Hudson somebody brought in on a trade. Looks like it's new, with the cover.
A 1945 Ames entrenching tool, with cover. Also in excellent shape, a little rust, should clean up fine.
An Arctic canteen w/cover, new. Never could cotton to them plastic things....
A web belt, older LC1, I like the older ones....

Thanks for letting me share....

picked this up off the 'bay. So little info available online, but I gave the low bid and apparently there was no competition.
It's marked "GROVE Tool Works New York City" which has got to make it unusual. Can't imagine how long it's been since someone was making real tools in NYC. I'll put a file to the edge and see if it's a tool.
The cheeks are post-forging convexed and the poll is only slightly mushroomed. Someone went to a lot of trouble to get that hammer handle in there - I managed to wiggle it out by hand and now it's in the firewood pile.
The head weighs 1lb-14oz on the trigger pull gauge. It'll get a 20-28" haft of some kind.
That should do it for most axes for me. Except for the bearded one I'd like to have made when I'm flush, now I'm only interested in Connecticuts. If this can stop before I hit double-digits it will be a very good thing...

I almost fell on the floor laughing. Being 1lb 14oz. i'd probably hang it on a 22" handle but thats just me. Nice score

isn't that ridonkulous?
yeah, I'm thinking 22-28".

Please excuse me for speaking out of turn. But the first step would be admiting you have a problem;). From where I sit you are already in to deep.
There are no support groups that I know of. This is just the beginning. Sorry:o.

Last outdoor flea market of the season today. And it was pretty cold out so not many vendors.

I didn't see a single axe until I got to the last couple of tables. There was an unmarked head that looked very much like a Kelly. I passed.

But I still didn't want to leave empty handed. Went back and looked a bit more closely at spots I had passed over rather quickly. And then, the tell tale fawn's foot sticking out of an old barrel :)

Here's what I got for my persistence.

This one's going to clean up very nicely. Glad I hung around.
