It followed me home

I've never used one of these, but I hung a Kelly brush axe on a Link 36" handler for my boss a while ago. It sits on the wall in our office now. I did not know that about the Y&P. Thanks for the info! That seems like a score to me, especially if it's the o.g. handle.

Beautiful old classic. The strap is forge welded on rather than puddle welded like the next generation had.

I think the light version is the handiest for the blackberry brambles around here. They heavy brush axes just bend them over. The light ones will cut them.

Collins, Sager, Wards ... the last has no stamp or its too rusty for me to find anything except a "4"

Which one is the Sager?

That rusty one looks to have a lot of life left in her. Can't wait to see her cleaned up.

Nice score. I am interested in hearing your thoughts on USA imports when you start chopping with them:thumbup:.

Well after grinding a bit my collins double bit and a plumb kentucky (i think) i can say tht they're made out of good steel and they're heat treated very nice.
The with a noticeable 4 and no other stamps had been used as an anvil i can tell. So maybe there was a stamp in center.

Sweet brushaxe, Gary3. And an AWESOME butcher block!
That butcher block was a flea market find. It had been left outside and used as a work bench. They even drove finish nails in it. It had four table legs on it held on with shelf brackets:D. I gave $25 for it and a lot of elbow grease later it is a good block.
That end grain maple is not that easy to make flat again. Its tuff!

Faint stamp on this. "LAS axe" I'm calling it a Douglas axe company fire axe. Wire wheel leaves a dark dark patina which I love. Down with vinegar.

Thanks Peg! I actually was turned from the dark side of vinegar and sanding from listening to people like yourself and Memphis. It's a smaller one. I would say 4-5 pounds. I saw another one in a shop that was much bigger and heavier -6-7lbs. They were asking $55. I passed.

Thanks Bearhunter. I've been waiting until I found the right one. For me, it's about character and this one has lots of it.

It's been too cold for me to work on axes lately but these are some I picked up from a popular auction site. I'm still sticking to my New Years resolution of not paying more than $20 for an axe head including shipping. I'm 10 axes behind and I need handles.

All no names except one has a cool logo diamond with an M and 2 quarter moons (A Mann?). 3 are perfect pattern types and 1 rafting axe. Two of the perfects are I think of an earlier more hand forged style.

That's a great haul. I like the look of those old style phantom bevels. They seem more genuine to me. But my fave of the bunch is the big rafter. The shape and angle of the bit is pretty cool.

Today I came home with my first cruiser.

A little while ago my grandmother's brother died. He was always known to me as Uncle Don. Recently my dad was kind enough to help move some of Uncle Don's stuff to be donated and set this cruiser aside for me. Today, while I was out helping them set their new stove and gather up the rest of a recent windfall madrona, my dad gave me Uncle Don's cruiser.

Its a Plumb.

I already removed and cleaned up the haft. This haft will stay with the head. The bits looked pretty good but still took about an hour and a half each to clean up with a file and get all the chips out of the edges. I would have hung it tonight but the only wedges I have are hatchet eye sized.

I think this little guy might become my truck axe?
Thank you Uncle Don. Your cruiser has found a new home.

Left to right:

Unknown CT $4
Breck's Victor $8 (this is a brand not the company I think. I had a Breck's Victor and it was OLD).
Unknown possibly Maine axe $5

Stopped in at another antique store in Mass.

Me: How much for these (1 axe, 1 hatchet, 1 cleaver)?.
Owner: $20.
Me: How much for just the hatchet (a Tommy Axe with the claws nipped off)?
Owner: $15.

Sometimes I walk away because I don't like the owner's vibe. Also, it looked like the axe (a rusty jersey) could have had a crack.

Congratulations on a beautiful old family axe. Extra nice that it fills a gap in your collection.
