My bro in law made a hatchet out of a 3 1/2 lb dbl bit. I told him that it was a "man hatchet". Then, today he gives it to me
! I'll be putting a proper haft on it.

Could not pass up some old knifes $1.50:)

Thats in great shape! No doubt it looks better in person. You have been cleaning up.
I am just starting to learn about saws. What I think I now know is I need to be able to tune them up myself. I have owned a couple(still have one) and have never liked the way they cut.
Thanks for the pictures!

Both of those are sweet... Especially that Stanley cruiser. I really like that little beauty :)

I was excited about the cruiser. I've acquired a pile of the big double bits (may need to put one of the nicer ones up for trade for a boys axe head).

Two dollar-hatchets and a bucket "o" bits.

The green hatchet has a kind of crackly paint on it like you used to see on manual typewriters. The brown one is stamped "Homecrest" inside a banner. Nice thin bit on the homecrest especially.

Nice clean hatchets. Price is great! I could use a bucket of bits like those. They look like they are in good condition. Those auger bits are not cheap. I am still looking for a good score like that.

I hope this isn't too many pics at once....

The Kelly looks NOS, the Van Camp came with it for $20 but is hammered. The Plumb is in the center in the second pic and is obviously a broad hatchet.

Top Plumb is a cruiser that no one noticed (I got it for low teens), rest are ~3.5#. The Au-to-graf was $12 but has a bad bit and eye damage. I overpaid for the Kelly but had to have one of the Registered ones. It is TT stamped on the other side so a pretty late one, and the bits are a bit mucked up by previous sharpening and thinning.

Holy heck! Where did all that glory come from? I hope I land half as many that nice this year. Really nice score. That Registered Kelly is sweet!

All real nice sywagon. I use a 4" knife quite a bit. Its not as nice as yours though. That registered still has some life left in it.If you enjoy it who's to say you over paid. They sure are not making anymore of them and they are not going to get any cheaper. I spent all day yesterday looking for old tools. I came home with nothing at all. I did not even see an axe or a hatchet.
It would be interesting to see how that big cedar pattern performs. I like them in the smaller sizes but don't have anything like that.

Great haul! I want one of those Legitmus machetes.

Regarding the brush axe - the rough weld is probably factory and not a repair. All the old ones look just like that. Welding was new back then.

Of those three Plumbs the one on the right looks like a rafting axe with a hardened poll. What's the weight of that one?

I can't quite figure out those plumbs. Some of them no doubt have a hardened poll that will chip rather than mushroom. Others will mushroom. But are they all hardened in that pattern? I thought they were cedar patterns. But I am wrong alot:o.
I have been looking at one of those Legitimus machetes myself. I have never owned anything bigger than a hunting knife. There is one here in a local shop for around $30 with the sheath. Any one no if that is a fair price?

Sorry I was all day helping a friend fix his old Dunlop (gave him a 32" handle). I did manage to get that middle Plumb cleaned up pretty well though while he was working.

These all came off of ebay over the past couple of months as a result of being more interested in looking at them than buying them but buying them more often than my wife was interested in.

The Plumb is 3.5# - someone said they aren't hardened but just have the rafter shape. I'll bite it with a file when I get to doing the edge.

The brush axe I just noticed has a very small crack in that old weld. I don't think it is going anywhere but I may have to get it shored up eventually. I wonder if they welded them before tempering (presumably) and more so if there is any way to fix it without blowing that.

The machete was $26 I think because it looked aggressively sharpened. Most are twice that or better. It actually wasn't too bad of a job but probably more metal than I would have given up. They are heavy - more of a woodland type deal than a blackberry clearer. A nice light SA machete that is razor sharp is going to be more productive for those issues.

Thank you Square Peg and Bearhunter. I try not to buy things I know nothing about.
Sywagon looking forward to what you find out about them polls.

Tremendous haul, Sywagon.
I think I've seen that Van Camp stamp on an axe locally, but haven,t been able to read much more than "Van". Maybe I'll pick it up yet
