Awesome finds! Love that nj pattern. I'm hoping to find one at the market as well. One can hope right!? I'll post up my finds from yesterday when I get some time. Great looking axes u have there.

Haha, thanks. I'm pretty happy with the haul overall. Brink & Cotton C-clamp, 4 Nicholson Black Diamond files (after an overnight soak in white vinegar they look great), a 1950s Adirondack Bat Co. bat for a friend, SK and Snap-On 1/2" ratchets and an SK 1/4" ratchet, and a #3 no-name cast iron pan, probably an early Wagner.

I wish I had not found this thread... So many nice finds. I suddenly want to buy an axe for some reason.

I picked these 'cutting tools' up yesterday of the bay.

photos from the bay listing...

The Flint Edge currently has a really nice handle, but again a lot of metal wedging going on. I'm going to see how sound it is, but I'd love to keep this one as-is. Is there any way to properly replace/fill metal wedged heads with wood?

Yes there is and it's not difficult. Steve Tall posted a how-to.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/875111-Remove-an-axe-head-and-reuse-the-handle

I don't score like Steve did. I just shave the handle's shoulder under the head until the head can be knocked down about 1/4". Then I carefully cut the two sides of the handle protruding out the top of the head, being careful not to cut the wedge. Then pull the wedges out.

Also, metal wedges can sometimes be pulled out like this.....

@Square_peg I'd seen the second link, but not the first -- that's a huge help, thanks. I really, REALLY want to save the handle on both the Jersey and the Connecticut, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to.

First, the Connecticut's situation. It's got two slim cracks below the head, both likely caused by the mass of metal crammed into the eye -- does this look saveable to anyone?:

Smaller crack:

Metal:

It looks like I've got about 1" of shoulder or so that I could slide the head down onto if I can get the metal out, but I'm not sure if the metal in the eye has eaten up the remaining portion of the haft too much to successfully re-hang it.

On the flip side, the Snow & Neally is on a much better condition haft that I'll be taking off, as the haft is too long for the weight/size of the head. I could potentially move the CT or the Jersey onto this haft:

Lastly, the Jersey. I agree with you about the haft on the Jersey -- it's gorgeous! It's just too slim for the weight of the head, unfortunately. I should be able to move the Wetterlings scout axe head onto it successfully, and still have ~18" of haft.

Forgive the picture flood!

Sashea, Use a good quality glue on them splitts. It will hold. Stronger than the original if glued up right. The glue joint won't fail, if done right.

Lucked out and saw this as it came up on CL and was driving that way the following morning. Now I just need to order up some handles! The pick has US PLUMB 1943. The bottom hatchet has XLCR with an arrow through it. The DB on the right has 3 ridges in the eye an has a 3 5 (3^5) on it. Not sure what the middle hudson bay looking one is but it has ridges in the eye but no stamp.

Chris first post and you don't say nothing? A picture is worth a thousand words.
I will take a swing at it. That middle axe reminds me of a True Temper. Original handle?
Whats the story on the one with out claws? Reminds me of an old trade axe.

Intersting hatchets, thanks for posting them.

No, the Tommy Axe has been rehandled for sure.

I've decided I like claw hatchets better than Tommy Axes. And that claw hatchet looks like a True Temper (just a hint of a stamp showing). The one on the right looks European.

Thought I would share this with you guys. I bought it from that auction site. No real bargains to be had there. But every so often I just can't help myself.
It's a Rogers MFG co axe. I think its a 3 1/2 pounder on a 27" haft.

I have one just like it, but for $6 I couldn't leave this poor thing standing in the wet dirt. It's a Master Mechanic: label is still on the helve and there were a couple of matching letters left of the paper label on the head.

What the hell is on top of the eye? is that some sort of metal wedge with a top-cap? if so, that is really, really rad. I am not sure how practical it is, but it sure does look cool.

Idaho Crosscut,
It is a metal wedge. They where advertised as being able to remove really fast and to last a life time. I have not tried to remove it.
Here is and old advertisement for it.

I hope no body is offended by it. It is what it is. It was advertised in this way, history.
