No problem, WW. Although..... while I was labeling the transformers, I realized that I had slipped into the country for old men without even noticing; applying the last label I suddenly had this feeling that I was doing something....out of the ordinary....and then, it hit me: nobody labels anything anymore....except for old men.

Ok so I am going to ask for the advice of you guys. Gotta few whiskeys in me so forgive any insanity. I have a buddy who is absolutely far from being a knife guy, BUT through our friendship he started texting me asking me about a pocket knife and saying he put one on his christmas list. Well I dont know if he actually ended up getting one but I would like to buy one for him. I have been racking my brain about it for about a month and I think I have finally settled on an Alox SAK Pioneer. My reasoning behind it is that it is not an expensive blade so if he looses it no fuss, its a versatile load out to cover most any ones needs, and well the Alox SAKs are just great blades. Other considerations have been a Dozier Hunter from KA-BAR, a value type Spyderco, or almost anything from Kershaw. I also have a Kershaw Skyline that I have customized with polished grips, tuned washers, and a acid washed blade I could give him, it looks very classy. So what do yall think, Custom Skyline, or brand new Alox Pioneer?

HAHA, Well im happy you did label them :D Otherwise i wouldnt know which was A/C and which was D/C!! Plus it made it so i didnt have to look up which to ground to the knife and which to clamp on the q-tip!!

If he isnt really a knife guy Id say the SAK, just because there is more than just a blade on there. Us knife people literally LOOK for stuff to cut, and we look for BIG stuff to cut. But most the (non-knife-enthusiast) people i know dont carry any type of knife, or if they do its a leatherman or a real little pocket folder and they are content with that. So id say the SAK. Then he can decide if he enjoys carrying it and if he enjoys using it enough he can move on to more dedicated blades.

Of course then there is also people like me would feel naked without multiple fixed blades.......

Not sure if I like this little Serbian backpack or not. Have it loaded, and can't seem to find the sweet spot for it. Not to mention it won't hold the gear I wanna take, haha.

Hopefully my buck vantage pro will be here tomorrow!! I have read good things about that folder. Cant wait to see how it stacks up to a manix2. The Manix 2 was the best folder i have owned so far.

But now its off to Tradewater!! Enjoy brother, its an excellent folder! I just have to have this TV. Waiting on 1 more money order to go pick her big butt up :D

Anyone know when the FFG manix 2 comes out?? I guess ill wait for the FFG to get another one.

Yah thats pretty much exactly what I was thinking. The SAK gives a good balance of useful tools that are more conducive to a person who uses a blade as a tool. IE cap lifter=mini pry bar, can opener/driver always useful, awl is as always a multi use tool, plus a good cutting blade surrounded by Alox scales whats not to like?! lol

I would love to go back to college, for the scenery if nothing else :D

And there was a lot of scenery :D I kind of felt like a dirty old pervert.

It's okay Psy, you've got it!

It's the first week of my LAST semester of college :D

Thanks and congrats!

I heard professors love it when students bring them camping stoves. Who knows? Good luck, Psy. Hope you kicked some ass and took names today.

I took Oral Communication today that one I think will be very easy for me since I had lots of training in that area for Psychological Operations. Of course then there was the remedial algebra Im going to have to work hard on that one.

Well????????? Tell us how it went. I know you'll do fine, just want to hear about it.

It was fun! Tomorrow is Art and English and a writing lab. I even got all of my homework done tonight.

Hopefully my buck vantage pro will be here tomorrow!! I have read good things about that folder.

The Vantage pro is a great knife for the money I think you will like it alot.

Went ahead and gave etching a try. I practiced on an ontario RD4, which is basically my test/practice/experiment knife. For a first attempt im happy with the results. I taped around the stencil and taped off the edge. I had to cut off the very bottom of south america because it ran on to the edge of the blade. And In person you can see that its lighter in a couple areas, but not by much, next time i will darken a little longer. I wasnt sure which to do first so i etched then darkened... It actually came out pretty good i think.

Got a couple more knives to practice on, but im going to make a quick and easy stencil myself for that so i dont waste the logo stencils. Ill prolly have to find some more steel to practice etching on too. I like it :D

Thanks again Mike for the sweet etching kit!!! and thanks JD for the stencils!! I may need to talk to you about buying some more of these when i run out if thats a possibility.

Hey that's great! Does it rub off with your finger or is it a deep etch?

I don't know WTF *this* is, but it's A2 and it SCARES ME!

Congrats on going back to school man, just curious if your using the GI bill? I havent used mine yet but a buddy i know said he was having a hard time getting it started.

And the Vantage pro looks awesome! I traded into it and was going to be alternating it with the manix 2 until i found out about that TV, but for now it will be main use folder until the FFG manix 2 comes out. Then i may alternate them.

Wowzers, nice etcher

Thanks man it works great! Now i need to hit up a flea market to get some cheap knives just to practice etching different stuff!!

Holy crap! Looks absolutely hypodermic. I bet that would make one hell of a whittling/slicing blade.

hypodermic is a good word for it. Not much of a slicer, tho. it's 3/16" thick with only a 3/4" high grind. wedgie!
Hold on, let me see if it opens mail...
yep, it does that.

I am using the Post 911 GI bill. I applied in Nov and it was ready to go in Dec. The school has a lady in financial aid that is just for Vets and she was a big help in getting it all lined up. I will be getting BAH after I have been in school a month, and I had to pay for my books up front but other than that I havent spent a dime.

Hey that's great! Does it rub off with your finger or is it a deep etch?

Its a pretty deep etch. I washed it with soap and water using a scotch-brite pad and I can still feel it with my finger and my fingernail gets caught in it. The word "wood" is really deep. I went over that part a few times with the D/C etcher. next time i try this logo i will go over all of it several times with both the D/C and the A/C. But i maybe spent about 5 or 10 minutes doing that etch at most. It was pretty easy and fun. I like hearing the sizzle and watching it bubble up LMAO

I want to do the logo more RIGHT NOW lol, but i dont want to waste the stencils. They make it so so so much easier. I tried using tape to make a stencil for my initials on a machete, but it wasnt looking very even or straight so i abandoned that project LOL

Im going to play around with the logo as well to see if i can get it smaller to fit on most knives, maybe i can make the world in the background smaller but keep the word wood the same size. Maybe.

That sounds great, Are you getting BAH and living at home?

I just looked it up and Im pretty sure im eligible for 100% of the post 911 GI bill as well. It looks like you only need 36 months since 911 or to be discharged due to service-connected disability. I was both. I might need to enroll in a couple college classes just for BAH if you can get it while living at home LMAO

I couldn't help it....
Today I logged onto the bay and did a search.
There it sat...
Lonely
Alone
and unwanted
for only $55 and FREE shipping....

A brand spanking new BK2.
It had already been on the market for 4 hours and no one wanted the poor thing
So I had, just absolutely HAD, I tell you, to give it a new home.
BK2-sheath-box.jpg

It should be at it's new, loving home in central Texas in just a few days,
liberated from Sodom, uh, I mean California.

I would have never guessed 3/16"... Wow. I am sure it would open A LOT more than mail lol. Very cool, and very wicked.

yeah, it's a scrap knife. It would be a strange thing to make on purpose. The tip is quite delicate... it will probably live out its life as a letter opener, of all things.

Finishing the evening with one of these, but holy cr@p it's practically wine!:http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/3818/76440/
Pretty good, tho. Given that it's all lactose'd up, I have a nice spoonful of yogurt to see if that helps.

Psyop -
Congratulations on going back to school. Being an older student, with more "worldly" experience, you are going to encounter many "strange" attitudes. When I went back to school after getting off active duty, I had to go to a Prof's office hours several times to fight for grades because they graded based on what they knew from "book" knowledge and liberal-speak mindsets. Had to show them "proof" or at least explain my reasoning/data behind my statements. I had an English prof have all the students in class tear out and turn in all their notes for 2 days of class because I showed the prof where he was "mis-informed" about the military.

WW-
You need to check and make sure that your ducks are in a row, even if you are not going to go to school in the near future, so you know if you need to track down any paperwork now, rather than at the last minute.

When I went back to school and applied for assistance, I learned that I was 1 of about 53 people in the whole US of A that had NO GI BILL "EDUCATION" Benefits, despite having an HONORABLE DISCHARGE after serving on active duty for 10+ years AND having 4 years of ROTC prior to that AND being a drilling Reservist LT. Because my "no benefits available to be exhausted", I was ineligible for any State of Texas supplemental benefits, as well.
