Izula factory edge?

Got it, Nick. Let me know what color and we will get another out to you.

Appreciate your interest in our knives.

Jeff

Nick, We just appreciate the feedback, the participation here in the forums and for the trust in buying our knives. Everything we do at RAT is transparent. If we have a bad knife, we want to know. Appreciate you stepping up the plate. It makes us all better as a company to know we let one slip through the cracks. Much thanks!

Jeff

All you need is an 8 degree per side bevel with a 10 degree microbevel and it will cut like a dream :D

One of the sharpest knife I've ever purchased, comparison based on the 'arm-shaving' technique.

Which knife can be made sharper. The RC3 or the IZULA? Which has the thinner edge?

My Izula Was scary sharp right from the factory. It shaved a bald spot on my arm with a light stroke. Its an awesome small fixed blade knife.

I don't think there is a doubt that Izulas come sharp. The bottom line is Nick got a fluke and he did the right thing by speaking up. Glad he did.

I am not bashing here either. I recently ordered a Pink Izula from a local dealer here in SoCal. When I received the knife, I was super excited to have a shaving sharp, hair-popping, paracord slicing knife- after all it is my first RAT.
Unfortunately, mine didn't shave at all. I tried to slice through paper- it didn't work at all. I tried stropping a little and no luck. I tried my hand at sharpening with some stones and no luck. My girlfriend and friends also felt bad for me because I was hyping the knife up for about a month before I bought it. I actually bought a custom kydex sheath before I even received the knife! I didn't know what to do. My friends kept telling me to send it back. Maybe it was bad QC or bad tempered steel. As a college student I didn't want to spend money shipping back and forth. I stripped the coating and tried sharpening again and again no progress. Well, me being the _________ that I am, I took it to some place to get it sharpened. I asked them if they could do it by hand. (They said they had a guy that does all the hand work. When I came back to pick it up; well, it was convexed by a machine. I was excited to see that it was convexed, but the bevel was terrible. It sliced through paper but because of the machining, I knew it wouldn't last long. (It didn't) It was extremely hard to get a good edge by sandpaper sharpening. The machine messed up the grind, the angle on the bevel, and the polish at the edge.
It's okay now after tons of work, but I should have learned my lesson and listened to my friends. It's not where I would like it to be. I know this isn't RAT's fault. I WAS super bummed because it was my first RAT though. I know this was probably just another one that "slipped through the cracks". Just thought I would let you guys know. No hard feelings.

This is a good story to learn from. Most knife manufacturers are great with customer service, especially when resolving "bad" blades out of the box. Always a good idea to contact the manufacturer before taking the blade in to an unfamiliar shop, as demonstrated by the amazing customer service from RAT here.

Kenix.....

Exactly. The few "fixes" we have had come back to the shop have been horrible butcher jobs. One guy even sent his knife back saying it was chipped and it was nothing more than piss poor abuse and misuse and a rolled edge that never got sharpened after hitting rocks or concrete or whatever he was doing. He got a new knife but it never ceases to amaze me what people can do to a knife.

I am truly surprised that anyone had an issue with the edge on any RC knife. Every single one I have gotten has been scary sharp from Rowen. I just checked the edge on my daily user Izula, I haven't touched the edge since I got it, and it is still hair poppin sharp. Same for the RP knives I just got it.

What can a do to get a better grind, bevel, edge? That machine really screwed it up. It's hard to sharpen the belly. It's thin then it's really thick at the belly and edge. It's hard to get the proper angle.

Question:

What happens to the knives that come back to RC for warrantee replacement?

Are the ones that are not cut in half with a blowtorch saved? Used? Sold?

I would be interested in a box full of them,

thanks:D

We don't have a box full. Not even a plate full....yet

I recommend using the awesome warranty if it bothers you. I've owned 2 Izulas and a HEST, all easily shaves hair.

Your problem sounds like it would be difficult to fix by hand with stones, probably needs something like an Apex Edge Pro or proper machine grinding to get the grind even again.

Or simply let someone sharpen it that knows what they are doing ;)
