Izula factory edge?

Just got my first Izula today and after reading this tread i was expecting a lot but mine just barely cuts paper and sure does not shave.
A well, I've got a Sharpmaker so i can give it a few strokes to touch it up.

My first Izula came just not shaving sharp but a couple of strokes on my lansky turnbox made it shaving hair like nothing else, my second izula came shaving sharp but there was a bur wich was easely removed,

Great to see the owners stand behind their product,

There is no way we can get every knife shaving sharp since we do this by hand, but the angles and edge are pretty accurate so a few passes on a stone almost always brings it alive.

My izula had a really nice edge from the manufacturer, sure you cannot get the perfect hand sharpened edge from a master sharpener but the grinded edge from Rowen is very good. Well a couple of month later my edge was completely F.....ed up, well you gotta love how this steel is easy and nice to work with because very little work was needed to bring it back to a nice sharp edge.

I gotta say I don't care if it isn't as rustproof as the other ones, because it sure as hell is easier to work with than the other ones, and far from your home, forget about the fancy benchstones, sharpmakers or whatever contraption you use to keep it sharp, you just have your field stone, your leather belt and a rock from the river.

I love my RATs, thank you for doing quality while keeping it simple and stupid.

Emmanuel,

Shon got your knfie today. You weren't kidding. Whoever tried to sharpen that thing royally screwed it up!. No fear though - it's fixable ;) We're gonna get it taken care of shipped back to you.

I got an Izula and an RC-4 today. Both are absolutely razor sharp, shaving with no effort.

Thank you so much! I can't wait. I was expecting an email, but just logged on here.
Just in time for the holidays. I'll be picking up an RC6 soon.

EDIT: I'm selling a hammock I own, so I am going to be receiving a lump sum of money soon. What do you guys recommend to maintain the factory edge on the Izula and other RC knives? Spyderco sharpmaker, Lansky, etc? I own some stones but I'm too much of an amateur to be proficient with them.

EDIT 2: NVM. I read the sharpening thread. So is the Sharpmaker the common consensus?

My RAT Izula was weird. I can run my thumb or finger over the edge and not get cut, it feels rather dull, but it still shaves hair off arms.

Maybe this is just something to do with how the edge geometry is?

My Izula came pretty sharp with enough edge to split hair and a few passes on the strop itself made a huge difference.

What device does RAT use to put an edge by hand on the knives?

My Izula came with a very nice edge - it shaved hair of my arm, did a nice job carving a few sticks and then shaved some more hair. I really like this little blade. Thanks RAT.

For as short as it is, it's a pretty fat blade. It's a great design, and I carry mine all day long, but it's never going to slice like an rc3. I think many people get disappointed because they buy too much into the 'legend' of the izula. They are wonderful little knives, and while we all sing their praises, they still suffer from all the things short, fat knives are going to suffer from. It's a little longer than a razor blade, but as wide as a stack of them.

My Izula,RC3,and RC4,all came shaving sharp. My RC6 came hair scraping sharp.I reprofiled the edge on 11" Smith diamond benchstones, ceramic stones, and a leather strop. It now sports one of the best edges I have ever felt!I don't think I'll be sending that one back,it's a keeper!!

Oke now it's really shaving sharp.
I just gave it a few strokes on the ultra fine rods of the Sharpmaker.

Ah, so it's just not a slicer type knife. I was sort of disappointed when I got it because I could run my fingers over the edge like that. I thought maybe I had gotten a used one.

I also dropped mine on concrete and as a result of that one drop the edge chipped in two places. And mine has already got some rust on it and I've only had it for a few months. But these things are my fault since I'm the one who dropped it and also didn't apply any oil to it. When I got it it smelled heavily of petroleum based oil so I washed it off, and that's probably why mine rusted so quickly.

In any case, I need to learn how to sharpen and maintain a knife and I think my Izula will be a good knife to do that on.

Got mine yesterday... Nice edge. Read this post and took the Izula to my arm. It shaved a nice little patch of ginger hair off.

You see, that's what I think the problem is. All these people that are not being able to shave probably look like Sasquatch and have individual hairs thicker than a stick of firewood....and they want to blame the knife! Buncha neanderthols :D

quite on the contrary ... my husbands hair is shaved way easier than my thin soft hair ... both Izulas shaved him, when they were new, only one shaved me (talking forearms that is)
