This is unbearably bad news. :( I thought I could trust someone like Chris Reeve, who's been making knives for thirty years or more. Obviously not. :grumpy: I am going to have to give away, or maybe pay people to take, my Sebenzas from me. They are obviously just junk, I would have been better with Chinese knock-offs. :( :barf:

BTW/FWIW, CRK would not be the only company to have some pretty significant HT and other production failures in the past year or so. :( Stuff happens.

Nah I haven't talked to anyone about this issue yet, that was about a previous issue. We will see what comes of this.

I didn't post this on purpose, because in a conversation I had with Chris he asked me not to post problems on the forums. I can't control what other people post though, haha.

I'm amazed at some of those comments on that video. Some people are down right stupid. You can tell they know absolutely nothing about knives...and the funny part is they think they do. Ha!

I'm not even sure half of them have ever seen a sebenza or experienced CRK's steels in real life.

I thought I'd share a message and reply from the madness.
(Message to Chris: Get over yourself! Chris' ego is out of control. If he thinks he can be less than courteous with customers who pay $400 ea for his products. I would expect white-glove service at that price point. CRK is Over-rated. Over-priced. Over-hyped. Boycott CRK, buy a Tenacious! Just my opinions.

@1dducks Thank you! My thoughts exactly. :)

Were talking about one knife in one test here people. This does in no way reflect every knife CRK produces.

Burr? If you're using a guided system this could especially be the case, or there could be fatigued metal which has been beaten into shape, and then collapses when you cut with it.

Where are you getting that people are knocking the knife? I am certainly not complaining about the knife. Keep in mind that I didn't even post this video here. I surely didn't knock the knife in the video, either.

Am I just supposed to ignore it like nothing ever happened?

You obviously didn't watch the video to the end. I am VERY adept at sharpening, there wasn't a burr on the knife.

Watch the video to the end. You can clearly see that the whole bevel deformed and warped to one side. It has to be the heat treatment, there is almost no other explanation that is reasonable.

So now I know nothing about knives? Please.

The post is referring to the lack of courtesy on the telephone, by the way. Not the knife.

I just wanted to say that I think chris reeve steel is awsome, the steel is perfectly hardened. I did the same test on my s30v and found that after 1000 cuts the blade does roll but does not chip. I was able to get the sharpness back in about 3 min. chris reeves sharpens the knife to a slight convex edge because a convex is a durable edge. since this knife was s35vn I dont know if it makes a difference. when using a edge pro your reprofiling to a v edge and if sharpened too thin will result to it rolling as much as it did, I thought the video showed how durable a sebenza is by not chipping. I would have to say that I wish Mr. Reeves would make the 21s with bg4. but what do I know

by the way I used a leather strop with bark river compound to keep the beautiful convex edg and a sharpmaker to finish the job.

This edge is at 42 degrees inclusive, which is actually more obtuse than they are supposed to come from the factory.

Plus, I have done this test with knives that are WAY thinner than this and they held up just fine. :)

Everyone seems to be eager to lay the blame on me, and not the knife. I have tested 18 other blades that did not have damage anywhere near as bad as this, and some of them were "budget" steels. The heat treat is off, plain and simple. I'd close this thread, but I can't since I didn't start it.

no one is trying to put blame on you, I personaly thought your knife held up pretty good. I have never owned the new s35vn blade and dont know the difference from s30v. s35vn could be the problem.

Why post the vid in the first place? Why not give the manufacturer a chance to see what is going on first?

I wasn't referring to you my friend.

Just some of the yahoo's that have commented on your video.

I referenced that comment and your reply because I thought it was funny. Not because I thought you know nothing about knives.

I thought you did a good job with the video. No bashing going on there.

Just some of the comments were ridiculous.

I don't think that the knife should respond like that to simply cutting rope. I'm interested to see how this is resolved. I'm also interestd to see if this is in spec or not.

I don't know what to think about this video because jdavis882 praised the Chis Reeve/crucible collaboration on the creating S30v steel (which was designed to be used as a knife steel) and the negative article left on the rope cutting video. I for one enjoy rope cutting video's and would like to see a lot more than 10 min. of it, I want to see all of the prep work involved and a close up of the end result. From this video it looks like someone was sleeping at the furnace when Heat Treating this particular blade and in my book you provided a good service for uncovering it but I don't think any less of CRK's because of it, this one got through the cracks and I am absolutely sure that the hard working people at CRK will make good on this one and every other knife that comes out of CRK.

You didn't put the vid on youtube?

Yes I did, but it is my right to put the video on YT. I test knives, a lot of them. I test them the exact same way every time. I love CRK knives, but I'm not a blind fan boy. I won't take the vid down just because the knife performed poorly, that's what fan boys do.

Did you watch the vid? Not once did I complain about the knife, or bash Chris or his company - so tell me why you feel I should not have uploaded the vid. Solely because the knife didn't perform well? Come on.

Ahh ok, I took that the wrong way. :)

Yeah I don't think it should have done this poorly either. Who knows though...

Thank you, my thoughts exactly. For some reason the people here seem to thing I am bashing the knife and the company. I haven't said one cross word about either, but there is no chance in hell I will censor myself just because the knife performed poorly. That would be a disservice to myself and the knife community alike.
