jdavis882 sebenza cutting test

wow this video seems to be blow way out of proportion, Its just a cut test everyone. Yah it may be a heat treat problem or a qc problem but john was only showing us the edge retention of the knife. He does this with many knives. Hes not attacking chris reeves knives but mearly showing his experiences with the one blade. If everyone was criticized for posting there individual experiences then there would never be new ideas out there, but only fan boys opinions. Im not saying I dont like crk; I love there knives, but I dont think that one maker is always perfect and no lemons can slip through. Its just not realistic in thinking that way.

Anyways keep up the good work John and let us know how this one plays out for ya.

Very well said!

If you thought the knife was a lemon why post the vid? That is what I dont understand. If it turns out the knife is in spec then you did indeed prove something.

I posted it because:

1: I took the time to make the video, so I'm going to upload it.
2: It was requested by many of my viewers.

I won't defend my reasoning for uploading the video any further. It has nothing to do with the knife. If you have issue with me posting the video then don't watch it.

I would like to test another S35VN blade instead of an S30. I have 2 other S35 sebs, but they are all born within a month of each other, so they may have all come from the same HT batch. Who knows.
Just curious...what is the birth date...if, in fact it's a bad HT batch....I think it would be useful knowledge to have...thanks ;)

You trouble maker you CTS, it's a good job you've got the old flame helmet ! :D

I had no idea it was you in the vid having just skimmed through it to the juicy bit. Interesting and odd results to be sure. I've never seen anything like that on a blade from just cutting on a board. I wonder what's up ?

Also, at about 6:30 in the video, you discuss the heat on the blade from friction.....I'm sorry if my question is naive, but would that at all effect the heat treatment on the blade?

Haha! Flamed helmet is engaged, captain.

I have no clue what the deal is either. But it surely is strange.

I was just commenting that the blade was warming from the cutting. It was barely warmer than my finger tips.

In order to lose temper a blade has to reach annealing temperature, which is many hundreds of degrees. :)

Sorry if you thought I was being negative or attacking you.

Lmao...it's hard to keep up with the posts..haha, one last thing, I noticed that the spot had the issue didn't seem to be the spot on the blade you were cutting the rope, but the spot that was repeatedly pressed into the cutting board. While I'm not sure how much pressure you were putting on it...IMO it does seem to make a difference to me that it doesn't seem the rope did that...but the board...

This is unbearably bad news. :( I thought I could trust someone like Chris Reeve, who's been making knives for thirty years or more. Obviously not. :grumpy: I am going to have to give away, or maybe pay people to take, my Sebenzas from me. They are obviously just junk, I would have been better with Chinese knock-offs. :( :barf:

LMAO
This is just 1 knife people; yes it "shouldn't" have happened but wake up, NOTHING is 100% perfect and a bad heat treatment or whatever microscopic issue can happen and will happen so lets not start panicking and thinking that CRK are crap or that hollowgrind is shit or that 35v shouldn't be used:(

I can see how you would think that, but I have used the exact same technique on all 18 previous knives, none of which sustained anything close to this amount of damage.

And yes, the spot that is damaged is the spot doing the lions share of the cutting. It may look different in the video, but that is the part doing the slicing. :)

My last comment, in regards to mr.reeve and his "attitude"....you have to remember, much as we are with our children (and this is his "baby")...right or wrong, our first reaction is to lash out.....second, I worked in the fly fishing industry for about 10 years, where a reel is double the price of a sebby, Steve Abel makes some of the finest reels ever produced (Abel reels), yet after meeting him dozens of times....he is the largest jackass I ever met in the industry...pompous and rude! What I have noticed, is that in a lot of ways it takes an obsessive, meticulous, and sometimes calloused personality to strive to achieve such high tolerances and performance. That is their part.....then they have wives and staff that ideally supplement those characteristics with kindness, politeness, and customer service....much like heather and Chris' wife do....and in my previous example, Steve Abel's wife will do back flips and then send you Xmas cards...lol.....I would like to think that all of THAT is taken into consideration before drawing a conclusion to mr. Reeves....if we all picked up the phone or wrote an email and got a direct response from the owner (wicked rare in today's day and age)....then I think we'd get similar responses...that's why the position is called CUSTOMER SERVICE rep.....they get PAID to handle you with kid gloves.....

I would like to thank CrimsonTideShooter for posting the video. we are all chris reeve knive fans and hate to hear anything negitive about the product. but truth is truth, I will have to say I have owned many sebenzas and they are yet to fail me, but I have had other knives like benchmade or spyderco that the edge seemed stronger. I love sebenzas because I can clean a sebenza faster than any other knife. and I like the fact that the knife is perfect in every way. I would like to apologize if I affended CrimsonTideShooter because, lets face it if I can get a better knife for half the price than it would be worth it. a knife is a tool and if it cant hold up to the task than it is not worth buying. I think that this vid is only for the debate if the knife is worth the money.

I'm glad to read that there are still sympathetic people out there that can understand the full picture and use their brain and not just the "in a 400$ this is unacceptable" crap
Was it the Challenger or the Discovery that blew up in the air even when thousands of people triple and quadruple checked things? yeah, shit happens
Cheers

I don't know where you guys are getting that people are shitting on the knife. Is it just a generic fan boy response to a problem with the coveted sebenza?

I see nothing in this thread that could be considered bashing, so what is the motive for your comment?
