JK Knives Passaround Review Thread

John I think the wood will dress it up a bit for my tastes, I like your finish. Nice and satin looking like a Gossman. Cord wrapped version of the knives would be a good way to crank a few out at a time. The ability to stash them in a kit is a good marketing point too. Brett thought the Hiker would be good in 3/32-inch thick stock and I have to agree with him.

If Jeff is thinking of making kydex, it's already good! His machete sheath is going to be famous in september when it is on the TV show we worked on in Peru.

All of my smaller knives are now available in 3/32", but I never get an order for one with it. On a knife the size of these it seems perfect.

That's good news!
I think the knife-makers have all known for a long rme that this is a very, very useful stock and could alleviate some trouble some users have with thicker stock which they are anaware of. Recently a lot of comments have been made about this and it is good to see the availability. A maker has to satisfy the "market" whether the market is well advised or not and, I believe, there has been a tendency toward "thicker is always better" and it may be balancing out. It comes down to the idea that, while you may get stuck in an emergency with only one knife, "one knife" is in and of itself a compromise. When we have the luxury of having a larger, thicker knife accompanied by a smaller, thinner knife, we have a lot more options available to us in functionality and a lot less frustration when using them.

Bottom line: Don't let yourself get "stuck" with ONE knife. Buy TWO JKs and always have TWO (minimum) with you. Actually "two" of any combination of anyone's knives but I fet compelled to put in a plug for John since he is insightful enough to offer multiple thicnkesses.

Now, John, what can you do in 3/32", 3/4" wide with a 3" blade?:D That's right - we never stop wanting, do we.:D

Thats the pic that made me a little quezzy!!!!!!:barf::D

Yeah, that was rotten, wasn't it? That's the second time I messed with you over that knife. To make it up to you, there's no charge on the sheath I made for it. That will be our gift to you for being so generous in including it in the pass-around and putting up with my crap. It's from all of us.

I guess I should have mentioned this because it is VERY important to me. I have some very picky preferences about Kydex sheaths and it is very difficult to achieve them on some knives. Others are very "Kydex friendly". Not that a maker should try to make his knife work with Kydex - the knife should be what the maker expects it to be and whoever is doing the sheath should have to work around any difficulties in making the knife safely portable.

That said, I still feel compelled to mention that the part of the handle that serves as an effective guard really works well for "locking" your sheath onto the knife. I found this one particularly accommodating. The moral of this story is that a functional and satisfying combination of tool and carrier is very achievable with this particular knife. I think the 4" Hiker and, Hiker's backup would work the same way.

This is not a shameless plug for my work - this is about John's work. I just wanted to mention that Kydex (in general) would be a very good option for these knives for any who have been disappointed with the fit and retention method they have experienced on other knives. Sometimes it's just hard to make the two work perfectly together and certain combinations just "click." No pun intended.

Thanks, TonyM.

That is a truley generous move on your part Jeff, I have seen that from you in the past as well.

Since you aren't charging JW for that, I think you should reserve the right to rib him when ever the situation presents itself.:D

By the way awesome job with the kydex:thumbup:

That sheath looks great!!!

John

Thanks, John. Did you notice the background? I that that for you. 1 1/8" quarter-sawn White Oak (Future blanket chest for the "missuz.") I figured you'd like the Oak.:D

No sweat, JW. I will sit on it until the other one arrives. If it gets to be too long or you change your mine, let me know and I will shoot it right back.

I think the two I already got him on were mean enough but, he's such a good sport that I can't promise it won't happen again.:D

Thanks, Tonym.

Well anyone of my models can be modified to a 3" blade, I just sent off a 3" Hiker`s Backup with no handle scales. Or, if anyone wants to, they can send me a drawing of what they would like. I`ve been doing quite a bit of that lately.

John

I sure hope so.........I mean, I do the best with what I have, talkin bout the blade of course, uh...yeah... The blade:D
