Anyone know about this maker? I just bought one of his damascus fighter/hunter models. Appears to be an excellant knife and is drop dead gorgeous but looks don't tell the whole story obviously. Anyone have any opinions on the knives he makes? thanks and keepem sharp

I actually found this forum whilst trying to research "john Angel" as I too have bought a knife via ebay and although I am awaiting delivery it seems ridiculously cheap for a quality knife? I will be interested to see it when it lands.....Hmmm

A very interesting forum you have here,

Hi,
I too found this forum while googling john angel after seeing knives on ebay.uk This is the second post on this forum that I have found. In my opinion these knives look like they are made in India/Pakistan or somewhere in asia. The pictures posted in the auctions show a fairly bad fit and finish if you look close. I have a couple of knives from other sellers which look exactly the same quality. I think he maybe cashing in on the fact that swedish knives are in fashion at the minute thanks to Ray Mears as he made a program there showing a knife maker making a traditional style knife. I don't have any proof but that's what I think.
Rich

p.s I have copied & pasted this in the other post.

Don't know anyone of that name in Sweden, and the name certainly isn't Swedish.

hello everyone,
i agree with richuk some other damascus sellers have exactly the same sheaths and engraved button with the same words claiming to be from middle eastern countries. Don't see the point of the so called 'john angel' knife seller claiming them to be specially designed from Italy! makes me laugh! i would rather go and buy from honest sellers who speak the truth, i always keep my distance from big mouthed dodgy sellers who get caught by the aid of forums like this one.
Thanks guys
Keep your blades sharp ;)

Welcome all to the Bladeforums. I am glad to see research is bringing up this venue to help with your questions. There is a section on the forum called The Good Bad and Ugly that is set up specifically for this type of discussion.

I agree the knives posted look like a mass produced type of Damascus and the overall construction look very much like the knives I see on TV late at night, the 250 knives for 299.99. Anyhow I did not see any makers mark which make my radar go up. Also advertised 512 layers, well as a maker that is the coarsest 512 layers I have ever seen. I cannot say however that these are not made by and in the manner stated. I think the old adage fits here, you get what you pay for.

probably made by the same company that sent this to my business email last week
I have snipped out most of it, but I pasted the introduction part of their email below

"Dear Sir,

Kindly allow us to introduce ourselves as we manufacturers & exporters of Damascus Steel in Udaipur, Rajasthan state, India.

We are making Hand Forged Damascus steel by using old technique and producing fine quality of Damascus Knives, Damascus knife Blades, Swords Blades, Damascus Rings, Damascus Kukkris, Damascus Bars, Damascus Billets, Damascus Axes, Arrowheads and Made to Order items.

We have come to know about you from Internet that you are looking for a supplier of Damascus Steel Products."

I don't know how their search engine picked up on the one damascus knife I made that's shown on my website and figured I'd be a likely customer, but I'm sure someone will actually bring their crap in.

G'day all~! I checked out this conman on ebay.I asked him "how come that when you say this knife(a laguiole) is hand made by john angel in sweden the pictures load up from Prime Steel Industries in Pakistan?" I was politely asked not to shop in his store*LOL*.I too couldn't find any evidence of a john angel in sweden.

It was a big stag handled hunter with a stacked wood and leather handle and
damascus blade. It looked pretty nice in the photos.
The price was inexpensive (red flag) but what the heck; I rolled the dice.
A week later the knife shows up and it is marginal at best. Fit and finish is poor to average with gaps and poor joints etc. again you GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Caveat emptor.
I am sure my manager will enjoy it as a Christmas gift.:barf:

Some one may want to bring this to ebay's attention. I believe there is some possible fraud going on here. The descriptions are not accurate. There is not way the folder that is being sold is 512 true layers. I would like to see what a chem analysis of the steels would be. not to mention how and were it was made. The description sounds like someone spent a lot of time on the internet finding a lot of the catchy phrases use by us knifemakers making our own damascus. The one positive thing that this has done is brought this to the forefront for those looking at purchasing a hand made damascus knife.

Hi, folks. I was about to bid on what looked like quite a nice kris-style blade on eBay and was doing some research on the putative maker and found you. I put my day-job hat on and did some research on the two main ebay sellers - custom.knife and handmade.knives.

Both of these feed back to a website www.primecollectables.co.uk, which just happens to have been registered on 8th Feb 2008 to:

Registrant:
SULAIMAN JALIL

Registrant type:
UK Individual (Hah! - This is a business domain for a start)

Registrant's address:
D-1 Commercial
DHA
LAHORE
PB
54810
PK

The actual site is hosted in McLean, Virginia, not that that means anything (despite being in the UK, my web-sites are hosted in Denmark or Grove City, Ohio (apparently).

I think we call this one highly probable as a fraud. A pity given longbow's experience, less so given blakesnowdon's?

Hi i have read all the stories written about JOHN ANGEL, DAMASCUS KNIVES. I personally have bough few knives from HANDMADE.KNIVES and CUSTOM.KNIFE. Boys these are really WORK OF ART. I personally feel that the stories on this page are all fake, only the real buyers can tell the truth and their feedback results can well show how nice products they are selling. I am sorry to say that the competitors are maintaining this blog and are campaigning against these honest sellers. ANY BODY who is not sure about their work should better see the feedbacks rather than reading this garbage.

I damn care who John angel is, what i am concerned is that the products are extremely well made and are truly hand crafted.

We should rather appreciate the good work these sellers are doing.

edit, reading the above post again it seems to be SEO optimised, sooooooo, JOHN ANGEL, DAMASCUS KNIVES, HANDMADE.KNIVES, CUSTOM.KNIFE querie not made in SWEEDEN . Questionable feedback QUALITY . lets see which post the google bots find :)

Potential customers of HANDMADE.KNIVES, CUSTOM.KNIFE please read the whole thread above !

harada2345, can you please tell us what experience you have with these knives? Do you know if these knives are indeed made in Sweden by John Angel, or in Pakistan by whomever? My guess is that it's the later.

By the way, I do not find these knives to be even remotely close to works of art.

Your post leaves me with the impression that you are the person selling these knives on ebay.

.

Hmmm.....

Poor grammar, poor capitalization, wrong words chosen, all signs of a writer for whom English is a second language.

Can you say... sock puppet?

As far as "John Angel" goes, he is also hawking his wares on this website. Lots of photos here of a very Pakistani looking knife.

Hi i just wanted to share what i experienced.. But you guys got offended with my feelings. Sorry about that. I guess people who have to say any thing bad for JOHN ANGEL are welcomed on this platform. Surely if i had some negative material to publish on this forum, my English, grammar and capitalization wouldn't be an issue...

Any ways i have nothing else to say about it, you guys should better put your time and efforts in improving your business rather than waisting your time here...

I wish you all best of luck in your efforts... I hope JOHN ANGEL would be pleased to see all this and i hope he would take it as a compliment that how much he is being talked about.. Hope they will keep up their good work and hope you will keep up yours'.

Yes of course English is not my 1st language not even 2nd..

Cheers..

When some customers buy knives from you guys, what evidence you provide them that these knives are made in USA ? It takes only 50p here to put any mark on the blades ? Do you think your mark is the certificate of your knives being actually made in USA ? Or any trade regulating official comes visit your place, watches you working on a knife and wait their till you complete it in front of him and then he signs it certifying this knife is actually made in USA. What you are talking about ???

harada, what exactly did you mean by this remark "Any ways i have nothing else to say about it, you guys should better put your time and efforts in improving your business rather than waisting your time here... " to members here who collect knives and spend their hard earned money, finding out if a knife is a piece of pakistan junk  or a well made knife from sweden or italy is important so to me this isnt a waste of time.
