John Lloyd Knives

Thanks to the great generosity of John L. and of Vince, who made me an offer I couldn't refuse, I'm now the proud owner of a namesake barlow:

This is a very, very nice knife in desert ironwood and 52100 carbon steel, and has been residing comfortably in my pocket for nearly a week. The deal also included a gorgeous, Kevlar-clad straight jack, also in 52100 steel:

I am as happy as a bug in a rug. These are very well made knives and my first foray in 52100 carbon steel. The barlow is the right size for me (about 3 5/8" closed); the jack is a bit on the largish side at 4" (closed), but it shows the Kevlar very well and, therefore, worth the extra weight. Both knives are razor sharp, just as a good knife should be. I shall use them proudly.

I'm glad you finally picked up that Barlow! It was meant for you. :)

Great pics Cisco & Thanks for helping out.
The 52100...It sharpens up easily, you'd think it's soft. But I used it some cutting on a masonite workbench with epoxy drops on it,nasty surface, cutting some cardboard. Well, the edge held up great. I was impressed

Thanks, guys. The knives are much better looking than shown in the pics. It's particularly difficult (for me) to capture the grain in the desert ironwood.

Rick, the spring is also 52100, but bolsters, liners, pins, and shield are stainless.

By the way, my name is Francisco, hence the Cisco Kid screen name. And I like Señoritas, too... ;)

Ciscokid,
I was eyeing that Barlow ( the Cisco Kid ) for so long, it was very close some nights - with my finger just hovering over that beautiful knife, that Burl is just stunning, Thank you for showing us those cool knives, please let us see more when they are out getting use!

Very nice pair ya got there!! I really like the looks of the kevlar handle covers, very cool and unique.
And that barlow is pure class, the ironwood really looks good, nice and warm with lots of visual texture.
John sure does an excellent job with his 52100 steel, it gets incredibly sharp with minimal effort, and stays that way!

Whoops, double-post.

Well, while I'm here, and not to be off-track, but.... I've got a question for you, Mr. Lloyd.

One of our brethren here (and a frequent customer of yours, I understand ;) ), Duncan/Campbellclanman, has recently made me the proud owner of one of your knives, a stag toothpick with the fish shield in 52100 steel.
First of all, I must tell you that it has become my favorite piece of pocket cutlery (due in large part to the emotional association it holds, but also on its own merits). Your maker's stamp reads "J H Lloyd" over "Loreto". I've been wondering, does that stand for Loreto, Mexico? Or is there another Loreto of which I'm unaware? Just simple curiosity on my part.

Thanks for doing what you do.

And Duncan, if you read this, thank you again, my friend.

Puukkoman: Yes ...that is the Loreto in Baja California Sur, Mexico. I have a little house there where I make knives when not fishing. I basically fish and make knives. Returned home last night from tarpon fishing in Florida...but got blown off the water from the storms now plaguing the gulf coast. The tarpon are safe...unfortunately!! Thanks very much for your interest and your support. It makes knife building a lot more fun when people like what you are building.

John Lloyd

I'm WAY envious of Johns lifestyle and attitude. That's a big part of what draws me to his knives.

John....how about some pics of that place in Loreto for us fans?

Mark

Yeah Clutch I am envious of John as well, his lifestyle with his skills, I LOVE this mans work, I have only 3 of Johns lovely knives left, I just could not part with them, I also have some others on the way of which just about have me waking up and waiting by the letterbox every morning lol, theres some beauties in there I can tell you!
The reason I have gifted a good handful of Johns knives away is because they are such beautiful knives, and it guarantees the receiver in being just blown away!
Its hard because of the journey these Lloyds take to be here in New Zealand, the admiration I have of the knives, then you feel a little pull of the strings when you send one away, buy what makes it so worthwhile is knowing how that next person is going to cherish his spectacular knife.

Alex, my friend, I am so happy you are loving that knife - how can you not love John's Amber Stag work? - you will have to put up some photo's mate

Hey Duncan, here's a blast from the past for you ;)

I am truly fortunate to have come into possession of this piece of cutlery, and it ranks tops in my collection of users for many reasons. I feel several connections when I carry and use this knife, and it is a fine one indeed
I need to go through this thread and read each and every post, and look at every picture now...and also need to figure out a way to get Mr. Lloyd to build a very special toothpick knife :D if such a thing is within the realm of possibilities...one can have dreams...
