June 2023 Buck Of The Month BOTM - The 55 - Ironwood, 154 CM, Pewter Medallion

Whew they are proud of that one. Got one on the way anyways. Did give me pause, that's a lot for such a small knife and 154cm, while nice, shouldn't command that kind of premium. Perhaps the ironwood is the big cost added in their mind. Or the nickel bolsters...

I got excited when I saw the picture and the price because I thought it had to be a 111 (not the classic). Started reading and saw its a 55. With the prices of Buck knives these days guess $150 is the new minimum for BOTMs so I ordered one.

I’ve been watching their site like a hawk after missing out on last month’s release (I really wanted a brass 110). I felt just kinda “eh” about this one. Price didn’t encourage me any either.

The 55 looks great, I just don’t carry small slip joints often.
Its a lockback, not a slip joint.
I'm going to dither until they're sold out ;)

I like the 55 and carry one. That said I have a brass/walnut that was a gift, and two of the ebony/brass which are fine looking knives. A buck fifty is just too high. Plus I was so disappointed at the appallingly sloppy construction of the last BOTM I ordered (brass/micarta 2 blade 301) that its just to much dinero. Maybe at $100. Sure is pretty though...🤔

That brass/micarta 301 was something else. Mine looks great at just the right angle, and does knife-y things well, but the springs are pretty gappy.

I have a BOTM 55 as well as the '21 Legacy BOTM, and both of them have great fit/finish. I'm looking forward to this one.

Nickel bolsters and ironwood are a $70 upgrade on the 112. The normal price of a 55 is $70. So adding that upgrade makes it $140. So I guess it's not completely out of line. But I think a lot of us are not used to paying the normal price.
I saw that the regular price of the 55 is now $70. When I bought the two ebonies it was $50. Time compresses and speeds up once you're a geezer, but I don't think it was more than 2 or 3 years ago that I bought them. I hope it hasn't been longer 😟
$20 is a 40% increase 🤯

I bought mine just last year, not even from Buck for $57 (and before I knew of any discounts). So I think most of the price rise was within the last year.
