June 27-29 PA Gathering

Most state parks have fire pits w/ grills. I only have a small back pack grill. I will bring some meat and stuff. I have a gas stove I will pack as well.

So it looks like there are 4 of us, is that correct, 5 including my friend who has finaly confirmed today.

5 is the current count unless I get some more affirmative responses. (All are welcome, just let me know)
The web site says that there is a fire ring but no grill. I will scrounge a grill of some sort.
I will bring some some eggs and stuff for breakfast.
We are likely to be on the trail at lunchtime. If you have any ideas for lunches, let me know and I will try to pick up some stuff. Energy bars? PB&J? Cheese? Something else?
Ira

No worries Stickman. Between what I have and what I can borrow we should have the equipment that we need.
For me it might be fun to do some group cooking. What do others think?
Ira

I'm totally down for some group cooking as long as everyone eats tofu and wheatgrass. Just kidding of course. I was only briefly a vegetarian in college while I was after this hot veggie chick ;) It would be really cool if we could catch some fish for dinner and perhaps forage up some wild edibles

I'm glad to see you guys are making this happen. Have fun and take some pics so I can bring them to work and hang them up in my office to show people what I could have been doing instead of working.

Any of these locations can be used to practice various bushcraft skills including survival fishing if you have the "stuff" in your kit.
Guys,
I don't have my survival fishing kit together yet. What do you suggest that I include?
Ira

The basics are some line...4-6 lb mono or the new high tech braid, mono is fine for this...20 to 40 feet is plenty...some small hooks # 6, 8 or 10 and some small split shot. You can add some of these plastic grubs or insects or wiggle tails if you want to get fancy. I guess part of the drill will be to try to find live bait near the water...worms, grubs, crickets, etc. This wasn't suggested to be a serious fishing effort, but it wouldn't hurt to actually try it with minimal equipment as a learning experience without the drama of a real situation.

I hope you don't mind if I bring my regular fishing gear, just in case the survival fishing kits fall short.

There is a nice variety of water resources to choose from for serious fun fishing (as opposed to survival fishing)...The Delaware is a good bass fishery this time of year, but it's a big river with a surprising current...the Big Bushkill feeds into the Delaware within a couple of miles from the camp and the Little Bushkill feeds into the Big Bushkill...both good trout fisheries. Then there are the mountain ponds I mentioned with typical warm water species, panfish, perch, bass, pickerel, etc.

I just heard that my Aunt passed early this morning. She was 67 years young with no health issues that we knew about. Docs said she had a major coronary. Just dosn't make sence, she always looked healthy everytime I saw her.
The funeral arrangements are being made and it looks like I won't make it to PA this weekend. My appologies as I was looking forward to this trip for quite awhile. Sorry for any inconvenience.:o

With tonym and his friend out we are down to 2 for Friday evening and 3 for Satuday.
I will have to leave fairly early on Sunday.
What do you guys think? Go with the small group or regroup for another weekend?
BTW stickman, I can't PM or email you through the forum.

I don't know guys. We just had a lot equipment go down at the office :grumpy: and I can easily imagine not getting home tomorrow till late in the evening and being pretty beat on Saturday. I'm leaning towards regrouping.

OK guys, I'm for canceling and getting together at a later date...especially a cooler date...there are a lot of nice resources in the area we were going to be in and I know cooler temperatures would make them much more enjoyable. So I'm going to bail out and hopefully will see you guys later on. One good thing, I managed to get most of my gear sorted out and cleaned :-)

Sharp Eye...don't know why you couldn't PM me...it was working for Myright, but that was several weeks ago.

Guys again I am sorry for you having to cancel this, I hope you understand.

tonym,
don't give it another thought. No one could expect you to attend under the circumstances. My wife and I send our condolences to your family.

All - it is obvious that a PA GTG this weekend was not to be. As the weather cools down, I will start a thread about an autumn gathering. Maybe we can combine it with the fall foliage. Also there was discussion in another thread about a West Virginia trip.

If anyone is interested, I am going to do a day hike on Saturday or Sunday. I am flexible as to where as long as it is within a couple of hours of Philadelphia.
