I've had a few experiences where a friend or aquaintance that knows im into knives and guns show me their favorite piece. Have a friend that showed me his s&w folder that he was really proud of. Had another friend show me his Hi-point 9mm like it was a sig 210. Im not interested in being a snob, so Im not, but inside im like, "if you only knew....." On the outside, I act interested, because if you show you care, then as they get more knowledgeable, then usually they start getting nicer gear, usually because of the stuff I have that they see. So just be polite.....
Any of you have friends showing you their hillbilly steel? Did you just want to roll your eyes?
Oh yeah, my brother in law who is a doctor for hell sakes, shows off his gerber paraframe to me like it is a fine tuned machine. I almost puked all over the wall. My wife later on that night in private got an earfull of how horrible it must be to think that piece of crap was worth any pocket time at all. ( See, I am a snob on the inside for real ). Darn you, bladeforums-its all your fault!!

I remember I poked a little fun at some guy's Hi-Point 9mm Carbine. Said it looked like a BB gun. He pointed the muzzle at my face and said, "Does that look like a BB gun!"

It was only last year that I found myself at the local hardware store looking for a new SAK replacement for one I'd lost. They did not have a very good selection at all, and the Gerber Paraframe was on the shelf beside the SAKs. On an impulse, I decided to finally try out a pocket-clip design, and tossed the inexpensive Paraframe into my basket as well.

That Gerber is long gone from my collection. Somehow, somewhere along the way, that Paraframe has turned into a Para-Military 2 by Spyderco. Maybe there's hope for your brother in law yet! :)

I hope you explained to him clearly that barrel and trigger discipline are paramount, even for BBguns

I fully understand you problem,as I too have 'tried' to bite my tongue when shown what I see as a garbage blade.

The most often shown blade is chinese and that will rate my ire instantly as my comment [ did it yesterday ] " thought you were an American".

Then the explanation as to why you NEED to buy American.

Many will argue with me as to the main reason being the price,I say cheap garbage is just that and I REFUSE to sharpen that crap as its not worth the time.

I do try to be polite,I try !.

Hi Kickplate -

I like all knives and guns, so I enjoy seeing other people's knives/guns even if they are not something that I would buy for myself.

In fact, seeing other peoples items is the only way I would see or handle some of these.

My son has a small Gerber skeletonized folder - not sure if it is the model you discussed. It is an interesting design and seemed to be made well enough to get by.

Again, nothing I would buy for myself, but interesting.

My truck knife is a cheap S&W that my son bought for me - not the greatest knife in the world but it has done the job when I needed to cut something and that was all I had at hand.

For my son and others that are close to me, if the have something that I think is of lesser quality etc, I will upgrade them on my dime; usually with a nice Kershaw of some sort.

I find there is nothing wrong with a Hipoint, either. I inherited one when my brother in law passed, and it has never jammed and it is as accurate as one needs for a weapon in that class.

KennyB - I hope that person was asked to leave the range immediately and permanently. Pointing any weapon at someone even in jest is way out of bounds.

best regards -

I would hope you took it away from him and beat him senseless with it for doing that!

In these situations, I like to have something nicer on my belt to show back.

Like this: "hey that's cool, but check this out"

"hey man, you should check out bladeforums too..."

I usually don't say a word, it's really not worth the time or the hassle....

Yeh, I'm getting more and more to this point.

The problem is that most of their minds are already closed to the point of all they see is the cheap price thinking they got something....

They say things like:

Just like...

As good as...

In the end a POS is just a POS IMO and no amount of trying to justify it will change that fact so I don't even bother as I said.

Yesterday I had a friend over who I haven't seen in some time and out of the blue he started talking about how he had a decent knife collection and that he just picked up some bear grylls stuff from wally world with some amazing steel. He went on to describe them as tanks with a deadly sharp super steel edge :o....So I asked to see one of them to which he replied he had no knife on him. I pulled out my Umnumzaan and watched him Shyt a brick for a few minutes then proceeded to show off the rest of my collection and tried to explain the different steels and locks and handles and blah blah blah. He dam near sliced his finger off handling them asked me to sharpen his knives and went on his way after I handed him some spyderco and benchmade catalogs...Oh and he cursed me on his way out..me thinks the finer blade bug bit him cause he mumbled something about how he's now going to be broke

Most people buy knives at Big Box Stores, Gas Stations and Flea Markets...

$35 is a high end knife to most consumers....

Ya this forum definitely makes you into a knife snob for sure haha. I always find myself looking down on other peoples knives, but at the same time I don't have the nicest of EVERYTHING and people probably look down at what I own as well.

I always try to be polite about it when someone does that. In fact, it's nice to see somebody interested and I don't see the point of discouraging the person by being a jerk about it. After I knew that the person was interested in knives, I have used the opportunity to give a higher quality knife that is inexpensive. If that person can tell the difference between a decent knife and a POS, then you may have a future knifenut on your hands. If not, then they will probably never get it and it's not worth your time or effort to try.

Yeah they do and I use to be one of them..But I always like to help educate people on finer cutting tools when I can...Got Spydusse into them and his collection now out shines mine..Which is great because if I get the I want a new knife bug we just swap a blade for a week or two.

It's not looking down at others, it really isn't.

The problem is that when people buy that junk they TRY and make it out to be more than it really is thinking they got a good deal or something for nothing. ;)

A smart consumer looks at the product or finds a product then goes out an finds a good price on that same product.

A Stupid consumer looks at price 1st before anything else.

Like the old saying goes:

A stupid man will buy the same product over and over.

A smart man will only need to buy it once.

Agreed. I might as well keep my mouth shut rather than argue with them.
