Just be polite....

i do tet same thing as you, every one of my friends carries junk

I remember I poked a little fun at some guy's Hi-Point 9mm Carbine. Said it looked like a BB gun. He pointed the muzzle at my face and said, "Does that look like a BB gun!"
id have disarmed him and kicked his ass right there

The folders I carry are all sub $20 folders ... opinel and okapi .. and my new svord ..
Ill talk to people about knives , blade steel and sharpening , Ill admire their new knife and ask them how its working out .
Some of my friends kind of hate me for always having a sharper knife than they do tho , regardless what they buy .

So you got the point then, I surmise? ;)

Most people buy knives at Big Box Stores, Gas Stations and Flea Markets...

$35 is a high end knife to most consumers....

BINGO.

if your knife is cheap, i just say "nice knife"; and i mean it.
if your watch is cheap, if your shoes are cheap, if your clothes are cheap; same deal.

so you "knife snobs"; the rest of your gear better be as hi-end as as the edc you won't use to cut anything more than letters; otherwise you are no better than the fella you just dissed.

Some of us really use our knives for more than opening letters, pocket jewelry, flip toys and fingernail cleaners. In the kitchen doesn't count as real use for a folder as real kitchen knives will perform better, that's more playing with their knife really. ;)

Yes, some even really use the $500+ ones......

I use all my knives the same no matter the cost, if they are users that's what they are and I use them.

You know, as long as they are interested in knives, that's the first step in the battle, IMO. Some people will never get past the cheap knife. Many others will make the progression into better quality blades and get into collecting, etc. Even if they don't, I won't look down on them for it. I may try to persuade them to get a better knife next time though.

As for the Hi-Point, I had a 9mm carbine and it was one of the most reliable weapons I've ever fired. I put around 1000 rounds through it with no issues at all. No jams, no misfires, no failure to feed. 2" 10 round groups at 75 yards, basically one ragged hole. I can't say that about some other name brand guns I've had (Ruger Mini 14??)

its not the gear its how you use it

i often find that the guys with the nicest or most expensive gear either dont know how to use it or are afraid to

i see this at the range with guns and also with knives

who cares how "cheap" a gun is. if the shooter has 10k rounds down the pipe with training hell smoke you Sig carrying butt. who cares how "cheap" a gerber is. if the user has hones the edge and practiced all his knife skills hell smoke your Sebenza carrying butt.

Hahaha no gerber is smoking a sebenza in slicing tasks. That is what a sebenza is for. If you are talking about a knife fight that's just funny

I know everyone has to start somewhere. Not everyone can blow wads of cash on blades. I try my best to avoid hurting anyone's feelings.

I had recently sharpened a bunch of knives for a friend (all cheap, made in china, etc.) When I returned the knives to him, I asked him about one in particular, telling him not to use it under any circumstances. The liner lock was bent out of whack, not fully engaging the blade, making the knife very dangerous to use. He didn't realize exactly how they worked, so I then proceeded to show him some of my "higher end" knives, their various locks, and how they were better made and safer. So it seems like I'm pointing him down the right path

I try to go down the polite road, depending on the person I will explain why they should perhaps look into a better quality knife. My cousin has used the same pos chinese pocket knife for a year now and its dull as hell with blade play and the liner doesnt really work. He knows I know what I am talking about but he refuses to buy anything decent so I dont even bother. My father on the other hand after attending knife shows and seeing what custom quality is, has gone down the path of the righteous and he is all the better for it.

I remeber the days when I use to use those husky box cutters, we all started somewhere right?.in the nyc area there is guys that drive round in vans trying to sell fresh from china garbage socks, guinie tees, wallets, you name it to the the workers at plant nursery I work at. Every week I would get a fake husky razor holder with five razors in a plastic box that came with it for ten bucks.hahaha wish I knew what I know now.

If there is one thing I cannot tolerate , it is a snob. A smug , know-it-all , stick up his/her arse snob.

There is nothing wrong with gently trying to steer someone towards quality where the tool they are using might be dangerous to them but otherwise show a little
respect.

Got Spydusse into them and his collection now out shines mine..Which is great because if I get the I want a new knife bug we just swap a blade for a week or two.

It must be Great to swap knives for a couple weeks. If I could do that I'd probably have a Lot less knives I don't use very often!!

so what can you cut with a sebenza that cant be cut with a gerber?

I remember, clearly, the first time I spent $100 dollars on a knife (a Benchmade) and I remember thinking " I can't believe I just did that!...a hundred bucks for a knife?!

Now...a hundred dollars just covers the tax on a new knife!!

Tis' a slippery slope once you start down it!

Sometimes people don't even give us a chance to or an in to even begin to steer them because they have already told themselves that what they have is the greatest. ;)

That is usually based off price in some way and or what they have told themselves or justified in their minds to be true and anything that costs more than that is a waste of money IMO.

Try to convince them otherwise is usually going to cause an argument of some type or other issues.

Some however are more open minded, but they are in the minority based on what is really sold and being used outside of BF.

So it's not being a snob at all MOST of the time, it's more how the person who could learn more or be introduced to something better takes it, most don't take it well no matter how it gets explained.

If the person is already offended or really knows what they have is a POS they will have their defenses up before we even say a word about anything.

That's not just knives either, that goes for a lot of things.

That said I wouldn't even try to steer someone who is carrying a gas station knife to a $400 knife, that just won't happen, there are steps to everything, progression of quality and features ect. To that person a $35 knife would be a big step up from what they are using now...

You could find yourself on the defensive very quickly due to embarrassment, jealously ect, they could lash out.

We see that right here on BF all the time, people have $50 knives bashing $400+ knives, it happens a lot right here......

Baby steps...

its a good way to see if you like or not but you end up babing it more then you would if it was yours. So you don't get the full knife effect you would get if it was yours. I usally carry a small fixed with me to work If im carrying one of his folders. In the end I think it might actually make me buy more :D
