Just bought my last benchmade.

I think the reliance on warranty/CS is hardly exclusive to Benchmade, rather I find it's not uncommon with American knife brands. Even with the best customer service, it seriously sucks to stomach the extra bucks (and risks) involved with return shipping plus some extra weeks of lead time. The OP's in a weird position where he can avoid these issues for the most part but I can understand how you'd get tired of having to deal with even the most pleasant CS repeatedly.

I'm also pretty surprised to hear that OP got a Pilar that was smooth out of the box. Based on my experience, I would've sworn CRKT assembled them on the factory floor.

I am confused. Didn't the OP buy this knife in person? Why not examine it in the store before the purchase to make sure it was satisfactory?

He just lives close to Benchmade. He likes to shop online so he can be pleasantly surprised when he opens the box.

It appears I was wrong. I am as confused as you are.

Why would anyone tolerate a $300 production knife with no lockbar insert and an apparently poorly carbidized lockbar face?

Most titanium framelocks with no lockbar insert don’t have carburized or carbidized lockfaces.

It’s up to you what’s acceptable in a 300$ knife but honestly lock stick isn’t like lock slip or lock rock where even a little bit can be an issue. Lockstick is only an issue to me when it is so bad the knife is difficult to unlock.

On most knives lockstick goes away anyway, or atleast greatly diminishes over time.

Also the time when a knife designer/maker came up may affect their opinion on lockstick. At one point lockstick was considered a desirable feature.

Get your bullshit detector looked at. Check out the video I posted.
I watched your vids and I would like to say Thanks and Welcome BF Mike1911. Seems like you do have an issue and it sounds like you tried to self rectify it aside from a long break in period and that sucks. I have had great luck with BM but I only own BM's with the Axis locks so I have no useful input other than the word on the street is to try to buy your BM's in person due to past QC issues. I hope you get it straightened out and don't get too sour on BenchMade with the investment you have made with them keep us informed of the turnout, It makes a difference really:thumbsup:

He did buy it in person and he was aware of past GM qc issues. Bought it anyway.

Yep. I told him the problem should've been caught at the counter. Would have avoided the whole mess.

I know if I had a few stinkers from a brand and I could see the knife in person, I'd do a hell of a lot more than just look at it in the glass case before plunking down money.

I thought this thread was going to be about only needing to buy one BM, the last ever needed, for life, considering BM's excellent lifetime warranty. Blade could last forever till it's nothing than just handle. Then a replacement blade if available can be purchased for a new life.

Love picking up BM turds and turning them to treasures. For life, yo. That's top tier service. Grey Poupon with your BM?

I own three Benchmade and all were blind buys. Two from amazon and one my wife got from a Cabela’s. The two I ordered online were done with the full knowledge of Benchmades iffy qc. I only ordered them because of the two day shipping. If I had gotten a crappy product either time I would have sent the knife into Benchmade or sent it back to Amazon for a refund and try again later. No disappointment from Benchmades end only in myself because I knew better.

The one from Cabela’s happened after I went to fondle and check out their selection and my wife, who doesn’t know as well, bought it behind my back for my gift for Christmas. If I had gone with the intent of purchasing I would have done what most people have been saying and went through their entire selection until I found one of the best ones. Alas that’s not how it happened.

The point is, if you take that plunge when you know full well the rumors and you had the opportunity to check the knife out for yourself, then there’s only one person to blame. Sorry your knife didn’t work out but I don’t get how you can start a thread like this when you know and you live near the factory itself. It gets kinda old when people make these threads and posts that are all the same “I knew the deal and yet am upset I got bit”. Yeah, Benchmade can do better with their qc if the rumors are as true as they say, but after buying a few and getting burned, who is really to blame then?

“Fool me once, shame on you
Fool me twice, shame on me”

It seems to me that, though you love these brands of knives but the qc is enough to make you make an irritated post about it, you would do yourself well to just stay away from the brand. No malice or ill will, just do yourself the favor. At least that’s how I would have handled it.

I live next to Buck. It's awesome to live so close. You begin to make friends with the people there. If one as the OP I woukd just take it in, Benchmade is a good company. I'm sure they will make it right. Kinda sucks to see such a quick post to blast them. Kinda like the guy who runs a red light then that evening he sees his picture in the paper and a story of what he did wrong. Even though as good of a driver he might be, Shiz happens.

So I think the ti is the 13th benchmade I have purchased. I honestly bought it because once I decide I want something, I kind of want it now. That is totally on me. I figured I could do what everyone has suggested which was just take it in to benchmade. Then the two other cheaper knives showed up in the mail, and were so nice right out of the box it just was so irritating.

I'm glad I don't live that close to Benchmade. I live 1hr from A.G Russell and Bob Dozier's shop. They get most of my money. Its nice and smart to handle'em before ya buy'em.

Sorta the jist of why I started the thread. And honestly I am sorta bummed about it. I will admit I was an all out benchmade fanboy. Not just because I lived close. Kershaw isn't too far away from me either. Just always thought of benchmade a bit differently. The cheapest knife I owned until the crkt showed up was a mini grip. Just always thought they were nice, and by no means am i implying every benchmade i own has had issues. I guess my post was more of a personal enlightenment, seeing there are other manufacturers that are making good stuff, at more budget friendly price points that do not have the qc issues had me questioning why I keep returning to benchmade.

Unlucky 13??

The 30 dollar pilar arrives and it opens just as fast as the ti....and actually has a smooth liner lock operation. How can it be that a 30 dollar knife feels better than a 300 dollar knife? And that southern gring quill? Un freaking believable. So smooth, so nice. Benchmade is making it easy to look elsewhere.
CRKT is not known for having ultra smooth opening knives nor do they normally use optimal blade steels. Also in my opinion they usually run their steels quite soft. So when you're having to sharpen those CRKT knives twice a day you'll figure out why Benchmades are better knives and are worth their money.

Crkt is far more well known for fit/finish and quality control issues than BM could ever possibly be. I would also argue that crkt is expensive for what you get (low grade steel, mostly Chinese made, fit/finish & QC issues).
