Just finished my first modded Opinel - show us yours!

Andi...love the picture of your N0#7 creation on the old beam. It makes a great shot.

Sitflyer...man that fishtail looks great. And the Danish Watco Oil seems to be the great stuff to use the liven up some wood without changing the color too much?

Thanx Gevonovich, it does the trick! Preserves, highlights the grain, and still allows you to feel the texture of the wood...

Thank you :) That old beam is part of my workshop equipment, when I use to cut the wood for my handmade axe and hatchet hafts. An really old piece of wood, already my greatgrandfather used...
Would be nice for sunday picture show...

@Pete: Thanks for the answer! Seems some of the wood went away while using this Opinel. It has seen a lot of use, for sure. Great work you did there :)

Kind regards
Andi

These are Ebauche, they come with unfinished handles so you get a bit more to play with:)

Sam

Thanx for this info Avoidspam, I had to look up this Ebauche,
Your handle looks great for some hard work:thumbup: I could see how it would be comfortable for extended use! Well done!

I got a Opinel #9 yesterday - I had a free day today and the weather was fine. So what should I do?

I made some pics about the whole process in getting a modded Opinel

I added a sheepfoot blade instead of the factory blade. Was some work, but it´s ok right now

Then I shortened the handle - with a saw nothing more and a lot of sandpaper while removing the varnish

Here is an in-hand-pic of that knife

This how I made the easy-open attachement ( I don´t know the word)

Here´s the finished Opinel #9

Mr. Humppa with his new piece of steel and wood (sorry, didn´t get a shave today, yet) ;)

Comparison to a regular #9 - a modded #8 and a the modded #9

What do you guys think?
The blade was too short, so added a pull. Now it´s easy to open that one. Adding the new shape at the blade was some kind of tricky. It´s not easy getting the curves. Do they are a little uneven. :(
The next GA, will come - I get close to 2000 posts. Maybe this will be on the list.

Just wanted to share the knife and the process.

Kind regards
Andi

I think it's pretty darn cool.

Hi Frank!

Thank you for your replie! :)

It´s nice that anyone think that´s cool. I made a day of work.... though it was a great day... :D

I really love that kind of work at all...

Kind reagards

Cool Mod Andi! I might have to get one of these #9'ers and see what comes of it...Maybe I'll even post a pic with my Mug when I'm done;)

I'm not a sheepsfoot fan (say that three times fast) but I really love these modded Opinels. Inspired me to smooth out the handle on my #6. Thanks for posting these!

Sweet, great mod, Humppa!

What would be the minimum amount of tools to do a simple Opi mod, let's say putting on a drop point and thinning the handle down?

Thank you for the replies guys!

It´s always great fun to make these mods. I´m looking forward seeing more of yours :)

@surfingsalmon: Well, I have these tools: Ironsaw, Woodsaw, Ironfile, sandpapers in a lot different different grits (320 - 1000), steelwool and a lot of time.

Kind regards
Andi

Way to go, Andi!

That's the nice thing about Opinels, they can be modded to almost anything other than what they came as. With that nice blunt sheepsfoot blade, Andi's knife now looks,, dare I say it, like a 'hard use' knife.:D

Carl.

Nice, thanks for the insperation. Time to buy my first opinel or two. Yall got my imagination running.

Opinels can definitely be used as a hard use knife, don't be fooled by the " picnic knife " marketing " it was a farming tool the French Sodbuster if you will. I have put a #9 through its paces, where most other knives would not preform as well, it was used very hard in a construction atmosphere, I never carried a razor knife my Opi took that role.

Andi, that turned out really nice :-)

I really like the dark finishes you guys are putting on the Opis.

Hummpa, you should contact Opinel about your stubby little guys - you might be on to a really good idea!

Very interesting design, Andi!

With the knife shortened to that degree, I imagine the blade slot is now open or extended through the end of the knife?

(I wrote that out differently at first, with what I believe is the correct term for the end of a knife handle-- "butt"-- and it came out alarmingly non-PG.)
