Just thought I would post some pictures of my new knife. Would love your thoughts.

Hi! With unique pieces like this, it’s very difficult to draw the line between an art object and a tool. I think, given the specs and the construction, this could be use with no worries as a knife but, of course, considering the preciousness and the look, it is much more fitting when displayed in a showcase. Really not my cup of tea but it reminded me very closely the work of an Italian maker which follows a similar philosophy in the making of: “real” and 100% usable knives (construction, HT, geometry, etc.) but built as unique pieces. His name is Stefano Trentini (unsure about posting links but if you just google it with “knives”, you get there in one second. Only in Italian language but click on “coltelli” and you can see his creations).

Thanks for posting. I wish you good luck and take good care (work/life balance ;)).

That's a tough story to hear.

The fact that you not only put in 100% to the art but 100% to the function really shows how much the whole thing means to you. I hope that someday that becomes a symbol to your son, even if he only meets you as an adult, as to how you feel about him.

Its a gorgeous piece of work, and I'm glad you shared it. The community might be centered around knives, but we all have lives, and so the wider story makes it all that more worth while. Don't feel like you can't jump into community or heck even WC for a little support as well. Life isn't all about sharp things.

I generally don't care for "art knives", and I would personally never get one, but now that you shared the story with us it has lot more meaning to it.
The knife and the sheath are stunning though, beautiful work of art!

Good luck with your son!

Jay Fisher knives I could never really relate to (JF seems to have a quite a following though IIRC), but your money and your knife.

Good, that we dont all like the same knives - would be pretty boring if so.

I wish you all the best in the struggle for your kid.

Sorry to hear about the situation with your son; stay strong.

A fabulous looking knife & display.

Congrats on acquiring it csbrann7.

Thank you so much. I didn't intend originally to divulge so much about my personal life but I really appreciate the overwhelming support by everyone in this group.

Thanks again- I'll be sure to look him up. Regarding this piece made by Jay, He makes it very clear on his website that he only makes the "real thing". Though this piece is displayed in a gorgeous manner, I knew that I was getting a fully functional tool that would be able to handle any task that I needed to use it for. I know a lot of people have commented that this sort of thing isn't their thing, per se. I understand that and respect it. Jay makes what his clients ask for and I couldn't be happier with it. I have a lot of nice knives and a lot of very expensive knives. This is not only the finest knife I own, it may be the finest thing I own period. It is an emotional opinion I know because of my son, but I am so happy that I received exactly what I wanted.

Chris - so sorry to hear about your son's abduction. We have an almost identical situation here: a friend of ours in church has two kids, and his wife took them to (I think) Belgium for a family event. She had traveled back & forth with the kids several times before, so no one thought anything about another trip.

Several days after they get there, he gets papers from Belgian courts. Now he's going through the same thing you are, even to the Belgian courts stating that they know his wife illegally abducted their kids and left the U.S. under false pretenses, but they haven't made any effort to force the return of the kids - who, by the way, apparently want to come home. It's now believed by Belgian government investigators that she was planning the abduction for quite a while (several years?)

Having that knife now, with the history that it has, is a good way to keep up the tangible connection you have with your son. Painful as it may be, it's a good thing, I think. And by the way, it's an absolutely amazing piece of creativity, both by yourself in the design, and by the maker in its execution. Simply stunning.

We'll pray for the best outcome for you & your son, and for it to happen quickly. Please keep us posted on the progress.

Its a beautiful piece! For myself I would be happy to just admire the beauty of it just like it is. There are plenty of inexpensive knives to thrash about these days that are better suited to hard use.. I like the effort its takes to produce something so nice, even if not practical in this fashion to use! Very Nice..

Obviously it sickens me to hear about your friend. His story is very similar to mine, and others who have been through the hell of international parental child abduction. My ex-wife took my son for her brother's wedding three years ago. The Brazilian courts have also denied my claims to have my son returned despite the overwhelming evidence that it was a premeditated abduction. It is for me, a living death. I hope his children return, and I hope that he has the strength to continue fighting. I won't mention what I hope happens to the abductor. I am trying to make my peace with my Father in Heaven which means living in integrity and trying to let go of the anger. I want my son to know the real me- not the man who has been hardened and defeated by hatred towards those who have injured me. The only peace I have found is believing that somehow, someway, God can mold me into what he wants me to be through this experience and that as long as I draw breath, this isn't over. I treat my patients with more empathy, my new wife with more love and kindness, and I pray every night that I will be worthy to have a relationship with my son if He allows it. The support I have felt has been wonderful. I hope your friend has support. If i can be of any help, let me know. I know how hard this can be, I hope he knows he isn't alone in this fight. Like I said before- this knife is a symbol of that fight.

Thank you for your kind words

Congrats on the piece and I wish you the very best with your son

When two of my kids were born I commissioned very high end Katanas for each occasion

I hope someday you can give it to your son

Post this over in the custom forum and the responses will be different

Sure many years ago

Yes they were made to my dimensions and taste

One is from the Late great Phill Hartsfield

The other was done by Rick Barret and Louie Mills

Here is a video on the one I haven't gotten to the other one yet and it's been 11 years since I got it :)

Wow! Just watched the video. Impressive skills with an amazing sword. What I most appreciate is the emotion that the blade brings out it is obvious that it means the world to you. Great video and thanks for sharing
