KA-BAR Tech Talk

Hello Mr. Tooj,

I would like to acquire the exact screw that attaches the thumbstud to my dozier hunter. It's come off and I found the thumbstud, no screw though. :< Could you provide me with the dimensions of said screw? Thanks for your time.

Best.

getridone,

I'll do you one better. I'll get you a new replacement screw and send to you. PM or e-mail me with the model number of the knife and your address.
Hope this helps.

Toooj,

What is your best-selling knife in the whole Ka-Bar line and what is the best-selling Becker for 2011?

Just wondering.

Thanks Mr. Awesomesauce. Ooops I spelled Toooj wrong. :D

MrKnifekid,

By far, the 1217 (USMC F/U knife) is KA-BAR's best seller.
The BK-2 is the best selling Becker.
Can't give you any numbers (proprietary) but both are good sellers.

WOW, that is amazing. Thank you.

Toooj-sensei,

Are the new combat kukris differentially or zone hardened? Is there a specific sweet spot where the 58-59 RC lays?

Thanks!

Qeth,

We try to keep the entire blade in the 57-59HRc range. The shoulder(blade and tang intersection) is 45-52HRc and the tang hardness tapers down to 20-30HRc. Is it called differential or zone hardness? I guess you can call it what you like.

Twin stick,

Now you know why I leave the WNY PUSU before dark.:)

Garandimal,

I've been pinged.

Toooj,

A follow up: what is the hardness of the combat kukri at the spine?

Thanks!

Qeth,

Same hardness as the edge...56-58 HRc.

Hope this helps.

Just got my screw AND thumbstud for my dozier in the mail yesterday, awesome customer service I must say, THANKS!!

Maybe I'm the only one here that doesn't understand that design that keeps getting "Pinged" here, but I just see a leather MK1 with a larger swedge.

In other hand, I was using my MK1 the other day, and started thinking about the portion of the blade/tang right where the stamp is located. I understand why it is there (have to stamp it somewhere flat right?), but that moves the blade WAY away from the handle, but its not large enough to put enough distance between the handle and blade to use it as sort of a finger choil for close up work.

I was thinking, is there some way to either make that flat part longer, or get rid of it? Like, using laser engraving for instance. I know that might not be kosher on the USMC or anything else super iconic like that, but functionally it would make the MK1 a better knife in my opinion.

Just thought I would offer some user feedback :).

ocnLogan,

Feedback noted. Why we do or don't do something is usually determined by the factory process or capabilities.
We do have a new super duper laser engraver which opens up a wise range of options for us. Notice that the Beckers already are being laser engraved. Johnson knives to follow. KA-BAR may or may not depending on the models.
BTW; The flat panel area with the stamp is called the "ricasso".
Hope this helps.
