KA-BAR Tech Talk

OK, I am way behind the curve here, but this should win an award or something. Great work, I want one.

C Tanner,

Then you'll probably get your wish. We are working on converting several KA-BAR handles over to Micarta. These days, it's not as big a deal as it once was. If you have the 3-D rendering files, it's easy to load into the CAM program and start producing parts.

Please (please ) DO NOT switch the BK lineup over to micarta, one thing thats great about the becker range is their customizability...

Like this, you cant do that to a blade that has micarta, its sacrilegious.

CamH,

Not to worry; when I say "working on converting..." I mean we will make Micarta handles in addition to the plastic handles that we make. Options are good.
Hope this helps.

I, for one, would like the option of snow globe scales depicting the kabar factory on a snowy day....

One other thing...and this is just a suggestion, but one I think would be easy, cheap, and make a lot of people happy. Factory cut liners. It's one of the great things about removable scales...being able to beef up the grip to fit your hand (especially the tweeners). But making liners is a royal PITA, I don't care what anyone says. I'd pay $10 for a set of perfect liners! And you could get tons out of them from one peice of stock. Easily profitable.

Thank God :D.

Is there any chance you could release white zytel handles? I've found that the brown Becker Short grips dye very well with fabric dye and it would be cool to be able to get handles that could be customized to any color imaginable!

Does Ka-Bar forge their own blade blanks or do they bring in billets of steel and mill them down? I was just wondering what their process was.

Bladite mentioned a machine that snacks on 1095 and churns out granules. I was wondering what their process was.

mrn8,

Sorry. No such luck.

Chameleonbear,

We get our billets of 1095 CV rolled into sheets of various thicknesses. (0.125", 0.165", 0.188", 0.250") The blades are then blanked out using blanking diesets or laser cut.
Scrap blades and knives used to be dumped in a dumpster. This was the standard operation at most of the knife companies. That resulted in a lot of illegal, nocturnal dumpster diving activity. Then we switched to a large tumbler that banged the knives so badly that no one wanted them. We are now looking at (or have) a large metal shreader.
Hope this helps.

illegal? you threw it out :)

my only regret is not knowing about it sooner. or having a larger truck :)

dang :D

it's not posted man, it's not posted! :)

I remember reading that the ZK line of Ka-Bars were based on historical designs.
But what design is the Chopstick based on? It looks like something an ork would carry...

stabman,

The Chopstick was based off of a WWII USAAF Airplane machete design called the Austrailian Machete. The "tooth" was used to cut through the fuselage skin. However, we get your meaning. Our project name for the Chopstick was: "Orc Pork sword".
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info.
I guess you really do learn something new every day.:)

BRL,

Yes. we plan on having a small material change to one of the Beckers. We had a lot more but time ran out.

HH, We got the idea of weird Project names from the Dilbert comic strip.

talking about those blades and scraps that get tossed out...is there a way to melt that metal and re-use it?

zuluninja,

We recycle all of our scrap metal....well almost all of it, there is the stuff that Bladite steals from us at night.
We try to be very green. Most of our workers and customers are outdoors people so it is important to us to be good stewards of the environment. In addition, recycled material pays better than trash disposal.
We have a very good Green committee plus our technical staff and workers are constantly finding ways to reduce, eliminate, and change.
Hope this helps.
