Photos KAI I Trust

So much yes to this! I just can’t get past the steel liner on the 0562!

The Kai models I like, I like a lot. FWIW the Kershaw’s I’ve gifted have held up much better than anticipated for their relatively low cost. I’m also quite satisfied with the 5 ZT’s in my current collection, other than the fact most could be a bit thinner behind the edge. (I say that with lots of knives though.)

Its not just the 562 that has the steel liner. Any zt framelock that features a liner under the composite scale that liner is steel.

I wish Kai would have made the cqc7k in titanium with good steel. That knife would be amazing.

I thought the 0560 was ti. Whatever it is I know it is milled out, unlike the 0562. I'm not sure why they wouldn't at least do that on the 562. Makes no sense. Still love that knife though. They did the 0452cf right. No liner at all.

And since it would seem we are just rehashing the last thread on this subject, I might as well mention my 0452cf does not fail when spine whacked.

I've been able to push some of my ZT lockbars all the way to the other side too. Not all of them, but an old 0550 and 0450 and 0452. This really bothered me and sold them all. I guess the only ZT that I miss is my old 0560BW. I ended up selling that one brand new for $150, but you know what they say about hindsight. If I pick another ZT, it would be the famous 0562 or if I can find a new old stock 056X.

The liner on the 0560cf I had was milled out stainless steel. Back then no one thought to check their liner on their fancy new Ti framelock. I wish they would atleast continue to mill out the liners as they did on the earlier 560 series. (Which was milled out excellently)

I believe the later versions of the 560s that have the steel lockbar insert are not milled. The 560cf was one of the finest knives zt has ever made in terms of build quality imho.

I'll check my 0560 with a magnet this afternoon.

So they stopped milling out the liner on the 0560? That is just stupid. I love my 0560 partially because of how light it is for such a big beefy folder. The milling was no doubt part of that.

Thoroughly spine whack tested:

0550
0566
0562
0609

All held up. No slip. No stick. Buttery smooth, except for the tragically assisted 0566. That one works as intended, as well.

I don’t care about steel vs ti liner, or about internal milling. Not even a little. The weight differential isn’t worth the cost, to me. I never notice or think about the weight of my knives, unless I’m specifically wearing untied, elastic waist, light material clothing like basketball shorts. I only wear that sort of thing to the gym, and I don’t carry a knife while lifting, so weight is never a problem for me.

I’m almost certain that there are some early versions of ZT560s with the lockbar tab that still have the milled liners. But I am also pretty sure I remember they eventually stopped milling out the liner.

A folding knife should not be used as a prybar, ever. Factory defect or not. Right tool and all that....
Of course ! Except that the whole concept of a "hard use folder " is that might be used in an emergency , survival , rescue situation in an abusive manner . I don't consider this lower end Kershaw to be of that category but any ZT should be . Anyway , I believe the thumb plate hole was drilled overly deep and off center , so more a QC issue than a design or materials problem . Hopefully .

Emergency, survival, rescue situation? Like prying apart a deck? Despite the failure, the guy did indeed survive. Saw him post just recently.

If survival is your true concern, a $30 folding knife will not be your tool of trade.

Very odd thread.

I trust all the KAI tools I have. If I didn't I wouldn't have them. I've had a bunch of their folders. Several fixed blades. I pair of scissors that must be about 20 years old (I've had them that whole time). A bunch of kitchen knives. An axe even. No issues.

Pic of the axe or it didn't happen. :D

The 0562 is probably my favorite ZT.

I thought spine whacking was a dumb youtube fad. People still do it?

But as for this thread, that ZT 0400 reminds me of some good ol Kershaw builds. I think its Kershaw that needs to take a step back and give us some of those old knives
