frankincense was widely used b.c. and a.d. in both the east and west to 'purify' churches & temples and mosques. sanitation being what it was, the stenches were fairly unbearable. especially at funerals to cover the smell of decay. egyptians used it extensively on mummies, sometimes filling the emptied body cavities before drying them in natrium. one of the forgotten reasons why people sent big batches of flowers to funerals. frankincense and myrrh were usually burned in ornate covered censers by spooning small pieces onto glowing charcoal inside, which were swung around on chains by the priests as their processional wended it's way thru the congregation, as still used by catholic, coptic, and eastern orthodox christian priests today. some say it is mildly hallucinogenic, aiding in heightening the religious experience. nepalis and most eastern religions generally use stick incense made from various fragrant materials including frankincense & myrrh which are offered by the worshippers and not just the priests.
