Ken Erickson Knives: A Retrospective

I just took another look. The in hand pic really shows what a small area the knife provides for all of the work required. Good vision and steady hands must be prerequisites. It's like neurosurgery: intense focus on a small area with great precision required.
Thanks for showing us Ken, especially since most don't get to go to Blade.

What a sweet little machine, Ken! Nicely executed.
Not many knifemakers would even tackle one that small, nor would they make that small nailfile/manicure blade!
You are treading hallowed ground!
Scissors next??

Have you had a chance to view all the patterns in Bernard's book ?
Maybe milled gold liners and scissors in a 4 blade Senator, down the road ?
Congratulations Ken. I hope this direction continues, but only if you enjoy it.

Roland,
LG4 has hardly left my side since receiving it:thumbup:

Scissors next??

Charlie, Roland,

A scissors is something that I have been wanting to make for a while now. Just feel that my skills need to catch up with my wants!

Thanks for all the kind replies on this one guys, it is very much appreciated.

Ken,
If you can do a scissor, then maybe a corkscrew.

Wow. The congress knives are just ... I do not have words.
Beautiful work Ken!

Vince,

I have actually talked to Richard Rogers concerning corkscrew construction. One of the reasons I am really looking forward to Blade this year. I hope to be able to chat with some of the best slipjoint makers in the country/world.

Ken,
That is great
But it is my guess, that there will be makers wanting to speak with you,as well ,since you are one of "them".
"them" = of the best
Fantastic knives as usual Ken .

Here is a short video of a gunstock jack in progress that I thought some might enjoy.
This is one of the knives going to Blade this year and is not available otherwise. This gunstock is based on a Remington R68 which is a cool little knife, 3 1/8 spear and pen blade. One of the things that stood out for me, is that the master blade if very generous for a knife this size(3 1/8).

As an informal poll would you rather see this knife scaled in white mop or ebony?

Thanks for looking!

Good looking gunstock, Ken. I'd much rather see ebony but that's just me.

Pearl ! Makes me think of an old time gambler's fancy knife. I see a dude dressed in classy threads rubbing his fingers over the smooth pearl of his pocket knife as he ponders his poker bid.
Thanks Ken. A folding knife looks relatively simple but as your video helps remind us, it involves many geometries that need to come together just so, to give perfect function and pleasing 'flow'. Not one part can be off by the slightest fraction.
Slipjoint makers do amazing work !
How are you going to divide 17 knives among the 1700 people who are going to 'need' one ?
I'm sure you will have a great time in Atlanta Ken.

That particular gunstock pattern is very appealing. It does seem to have a lot of blade tucked into that frame. Thanks for the video Ken. I'm glad I don't have to decide on the scales.

Mike,
I think what I like about this Remington pattern compared to some others is the flat front bolster. Many other gunstocks seem to have a rounded front bolster and flat cap bolster.

Thanks for your thoughts Roland and Elliott on the scale material. If I had more time, maybe a matched set, one with Ebony and one with Mop would have been cool.

Ken ,
Thanks for taking the time to make the video,
I love the old Remington patterns. I've got the same
cataloge and I enjoy looking at all the different patterns
Remington made. Your's looks like it will be amazing.
Can't wait to see it finished out. Ebony sure would look great
on that one....imho

That's going to be a great knife, Ken! Pearl or Ebony!

Thank you for posting the WIP videos, Ken. I'm learning a lot from watching them. I just saw this thread recently and have been working my way through it --beautiful work!
