Ken Erickson Knives: A Retrospective

Thanks for the kind comments on this "little son of a gun"!

Charlie,
Thank you for the constructive email and maybe we can meet in Atlanta next year.

I have a good line on some antique tortoise shell at Blade so maybe the next one of these I do will be scaled with it.

I finished up the Gunstock today and am really happy with how it turned out. Thanks for following along , this one was a fun one to build.

Great work Ken !

I am building up a stockman for a order and was asked by my customer if I would not mind a few WIP pictures. I thought this one would be interesting as it is not my "normal" stockman pattern. This knife is based on a cross between a Schrade Walden 825 and a Old Timer 81OT. The Old Timer is a 4 inch knife while the Schrade is 3 1/2?
What distinguishes these stock knives is the very serpentine frame(compared to many other stock knives) and the California or Turkish clip master blades. My customer likes the master blade profile on the Schrade better than the Old Timer, but likes the length of the Old timer better. Soooooo, we had a marriage:D:thumbup:. If you notice the length of the clip on the shorter Schrade continues back much further than the clip on the Old Timer.

The nail pull placement is very critical on the master as it sits very low in the frame, almost un-noticeable.I also moved both pulls to the pile side for the secondary blades unlike the Schrade but the same as the Old Timer.

Still a ton of work to go, but all blades are fit up, pulls cut, blades ground with clearance all the way around. This one is in CPM154cm and will be halfted in my dyed and jigged bone with a Schrade style shield.

Thanks for looking and any comments and critiques  more than welcome.

Wow Ken.....Just BRILLIANT! You have recreated that main blade just perfectly and the dimensions of the whole knife look perfect.

I am speechless................ I cannot thank you enough for taking on this project.

Steven

As most I'm sure, I always enjoy your WIPs Ken!
That's gonna be a nice slim, pocketable knife! Looking forward to its "wardrobe"!:D

I was really happy with all the blade profiles as they worked out. The master blade is a bit fuller and longer than the blade on the Old Timer. Its hard to see but the sheepsfoot blade has a more pronounced swedge than either the Schrade or Old Timer.

I also forgot to mention I have built this knife with half-stops, unlike the Schrade or Old Timer. I will also be rounding the scales much more than the Old Timer which is a bit squared.

Great knife and congrats, Steven. I know you're going to love it!

Ken, that should be a 61OT(not 81) and i'm sure you will not be using the Swinden key method for the Master pivot pin. This Schrade patent does not allow for the blade to be tightened without taking the knife apart.
As a Schradeaholic i had to put my 2 cents in here as both 'inspiration' knives are good ol' Schrade U.S.A. patterns.
I'm sure this Custom Cross-Breed will be a Star.

Roland,

Thanks for the correction, I did not have my reading/work glasses and asked Nettie is she could read the pattern number. We decided together it was a 8!

And of course no Swinden key method for securing the frames on this one. Years back I tried to disassemble one of these OT and figured out pretty quick what a Swinden key was, of course at that time had no idea of the proper name.

Thanks again,

Very cool! I also enjoy the WIP photos. I look forward to seeing the finished knife with the bone handles and Schrade shield.

Ken-that looks like it's going to be another super stockman-can't wait to see the finished product!!!

Had a chance to work on the stockman. The frames are milled, bolsters rounded and the scales installed.

Thanks for the kind comments on this one.
