Kerry Hampton Knives

I like black canvas micarta...all SS hardware looks sweet on it.

very nice, Kerry! I like it. That black canvas looks very elegant, but "usable". Is that D2 on the tang?

Best,
Peter

Yes...only a few Khnutbusters have been something other than D2. I did one in A2 and a couple in 52100.

Nice piece Kerry. Is that the "gimp" shield? If so, do you know where the name came from?

Mike

Do I know the origin of the gimp shield? No. But this is the shield that was used on the Case/Bose Yukon(2001). That's where THIS ONE came from :)

(Just did a quick search on the Net and found an old Catt. Yukon with the same shield. Tony doesn't normally just throw a shield on something without a reason. The gimp is apparently historically correct on a Yukon)

You just barely beat me to it, Kerry!. That Bone DOES Rock, for sure!

Amen to the rock factor on that Yukon. Where have I seen that picture before? It's been a while, but it looks familiar, and seems like it was a point of discussion too.

I should quit looking at this thread at work. Now I have to remember to look at it at home to see all the pics.

Haha...I bought that exact Catt a couple years ago...I can tell by the bone It had a little "tweaking" done to it. I got furious at the seller and sent it back to him!!!! I was sooooo bummed out... :(

We discussed it over on Levine's forum

My nutbuster is here :D:D

Let me tell ya, the Khnutbuster Kerry makes is one sweet knife!!!
I'm really diggin the folsky looking micarta...and well, everything about this knife for that matter.

I know, I talked about it when I posted the pics Kerry sent me. And his pics are great, while mine suck, but I still had to make a post with my crappy pics:p

Thanks again Kerry:thumbup:

I think your pix DON'T suck...looks good to me. The bronze pivot washer looks like bronze. Nice job and I'm glad you're happy with the knife.

This is one question for which I know the answer but I must ask it anyways. I know my "stainless" steels from years of experience and even though I couldn't elaborate in any way that makes sense why I prefer D-2 to ATS-34 I do know why I'd much rather have a good D-2 blade than a good ATS-34 one. In other words, I now what I like and I think I know why but I couldn't explain it properly.

Having said that, the question then is: What is your favorite carbon steel for a blade? Why A2 and not 52100 or 1085 or O1, for instance? I like 440V and D-2 in "stainless", what would I like in carbon?

There, the cat is out the bag. Thank you in advance for your kind (or not) responses.

Your answer may be in the top part.

...D2 isn't a stainless, so you may like it!

J/K with ya:p
Though D2 is about the very same as the stainless ats34 as far as rusting would go.

edit...BTW- the D2 is so close to stainless, it may as well be called one. It won't take an etch like the true stainless steels you mentioned.

Its nice to see some KHnutbusters for us who is still waiting. And a little confusing to see other patterns that also can be chosen.

From a knife making point of view, A2 and "stain resistant" D2 is a lot cleaner to work with because they are air quench steels. The other carbon steels you mention are all oil quench steels....messy stinky oily messy poo poo. :p
