Kershaw Knives News Thread

night ppls. ill let you know tomorow if (small if) i pick up anything awsome tomorow at the knife show. boy do i love offset news!

Ken Onion/Kershaw collaborations would be a good subject. After the way the MIM Offsets have turned out, Ken must be pretty excited about the process. I expect he's got to be working on an incredible follow up to really push the envelope of the technology.
We are going back and forth in deciding on crazy geometry (show off the technology) or simple function, thoughts?

Offsetlover, we should probably both cut back on the drooling, it tends to be corrosive. I'm sure the dealers at the shows don't appreciate it too much.

Hope you find the knife you want tomorrow!

Hey Tim G, I see your back on this thread, you have any new patterns you are working on?

Hendrick Motorsports rules btw.

For now, since its such new technology it seems like it should really be a showcase for what's possible. Something that attracts attention (and wins more awards). Ideally, crazy geometry, that provides otherwise unavailable practical function would be the way to go. (I'm sure that'd be a cakewalk for Ken ;) )
I would also think that MIM would give some interesting possibilities for the part of the blade under the scales. I had a couple ideas I've been meaning to play with in SketchUp, but I've been tied up modeling the NRG trying to figure out what the extended tang looks like when the knife is folded (still can't figure it out).

At this point in the life of the process, simple function doesn't seem to make much sense unless the MIM process is inherently more practical for the shape of the blade than a traditional method.

I don't disagree, and believe Ken feels the same. It's just finding the time to put one's imagination to work.

I also believe there is a fine line between over the top fantasy, and just showing off the technology. The future should bring forth incredible blades, with geometry that has not yet been attained.

#24 of course.

I love this thread. I just got back from walking the dogs, so I'm playing catch-up here, but reading all this cool knife stuff has me misty. Thomas, you really made my day. I love hearing about the knives of the future. It gives me a reason to keep working to earn more money to buy knives that don't even exist yet.
As far as MIM is concerned, I never get bored of running my fingers over the 3D elements of the Offset. The transition fron the recurve hollow grind to the flat grind, and the "draped" spine. My girlfriend hates it. She actually gets jealous of how much I love my Offset. My bad, I take it to bed with me.
One of the reasons that I buy Kershaw K.O. instead of BlawBlaw is because the knives are just plain sexy. You can make the most functional blade out of ZDP or some other exotic steel, and if it's not sexy, I won't HAVE to buy it. (Unfortunatley for me the mini cyclone and leek fall into that categorey) So I say go for it. 3D me!

You just reminded me, we are doing Ken's Dead Sexy this year as well, won't the wife be excited about that one. ;)

Naturally #24, not sure why I had to ask.

Does the MIM process lend itself to composites of different metals (sort of like doubleshot injection molding in plastics)? Could you lay a spine or a lattice of a different metal in a mold before injection. I would guess there are too many variables, like different coefficients of expansion. Still, if it could work, you could engineer some pretty amazing properties into a blade.

Saw some pics of the Mongrel at Ken's site, that looks like a good one to pursue.

Wow, I really look forward to the Dead Sexy. I'd really love to see the stud lock on it though, its tough to switch back to a liner lock after using the stud locks on my Mini Mojo (Mojito) and Spec Bump all day.

The Stud Lock can be addicting for sure. FYI, we have no future patterns on the table that have the Stud Lock. :(

To date, we have not figured out composite MIM'd blade. Hopefully in the future. Now that would be cool.

I have seen the damascus Dead Sexy....wow!

Too bad about the stud locks. I love the combo of the safety and the stud lock on the Mini Mojito. I can have that knife opened, cutting, and closed, before people are even sure what they are seeing. Its funny to see the looks on peoples' faces while they try to figure out what they just saw.

The thread was really great tonight, lots of good info. Gotta work tomorrow though, so have a great weekend all!
Thanks again Thomas!

so do i! #24??? what? comon, #8 baby! lol

AA, i have no doubt that if i did that with my fav knife when i get married, she would use it one me  ;) . i wish you luck lol

i would love to see you guys at kershaw do some of the freaky geometry and some of the simple usage. like a 90/10 thing.

hey thomas w. ive been looking at the stud lock and i think that it is great, but i do have 2 suggestions. the first being its shelf needs to be just a hair flatter. the second being the lock needs to rest a bit farther back. it would just add to the safety of it. lemme know what you think. could be the stud lock 2.0 lol.

well off to the knife show. i will post my findings tonight.

till then

gimmie offsets or give me death!

Let's see...We are doing the Tirade, possibly a Taboo 2, hmmm....oh the Melee as well. I can't get into spec's as they are yet to be determined, but we will debut them all in June at the Blade show. I do know there will be titanium and exotic steel involved.

Glad to hear that about the materials being used! And the Taboo 2? Is it a smaller or larger version of the KO Taboo? Love the Melee and the Dead Sexy is a must-buy! Please no Black-coated blades, it would take away from the beauty of the blade shape.

Where is the Blade show in June? I may need to see the protos in person! :)
