Kershaw Steven Seagal - hmm...

I Am Writing In Response To Some Of The Comments Regarding The Ken Onion Seagal Knife. I Personally Don't Own One Other Than Having Held A Few At Some Knife Expos. It Appears To Be A Decent Knife From What I Quickly Examined. However, I'm More Concerned With The Seagal Inquisition I Examined From Some Of The Members Of This Forum!!! First Off, I'm A Professional Martial Artist With Over 20 Yrs. Experience Under My Belt And An Ex-lawman. I Started Martial Arts Training When Seagal And Van Damme First Started In The Movie Industry. I Personally Like Both Actors As Far As On-camera Goes. However, Seagal Is An Individual Clouded In Much Mystery....with Ties To The C.i.a. And An Impressive Background In His Martial Arts Training In Japan. Bottom Line, Not Many Martial Artists In The Movie Industry Have Backgrounds That Can Be Truly Substantiated Like Seagal. That Is, Van Damme And Many Others Talk The Talk...but, That's Where It Ends!!! Off-camera...i'd Take On Van Damme Anytime....now, Seagal...i'd Seriously Have To Think Twice!!! Now, Whether The Man Is A Nice Person To Be Around...i Can't Personally Judge...but, From One Professional Martial Artist To Another...i Have To Give Credit Where Credit Is Do!!! Also, Yeah The Guy's Put On Some Weight Through The Years And He Doesn't Seem To Move Like He Did In His Earlier Films...but, The Guy's Still Good!!! Lastly, I Read Someone Say, "he's No Bruce Lee!!!" Well, No S---!!!! Nobody's Like Bruce...he Was A Legend, And His Style Was Jeet Kune Do....not Aikido Like Seagal!!!! The Point Is, Some People Like Aikido....some Like Jeet Kune Do!!! It's All A Matter Of Preference. But, Just Because You're Not Fan Of Aikido Is Ignorant And Uninformed To Say Someone Can't Fight Because Of Your Opposition To Their Style Of Fighting!!!! For Me, I Think The Seagal Knife Is A Good Concept And Appeals Greatly To His Fans As Well As Professional Martial Artist Like Myself!!!!!

It seems like a nice knife but the association with Steven Segal is a deal breaker for me. As a martial artist, I have little respect for Steven Seagal.

My sentiments exactly.

i'm curious as to what steven seagal did.seems like he committed some sort of crime or something.

Seagal is alright. I can understand Black Tigers post. I heard Van Damme was a blowhard and got school a few times. I personally love the Akido style mainly because it uses momentum against you. I read in one of Blademags articles that Seagal was at a knife show and is an avid collector. I've seen his knife first hand as a friend of mine just got one and loves it. The liners are notched into the frames and very strong. The The rayskin inlays were not out of whack. All in all it's a decent knife. He has a peeve about "writing" on the blade as many of you appear to but not so much that it's a signature. He just doesn't like anything written on the blade but that's another argument. IMO, if any of todays movie martial artists deserve some kind of respect, it would be him. Wasn't there something in the news back about him testifying in some trial or something? He was a witness or such if I remember correctly.

So you decided to signup and share your thoughts concerning popular opinion on Segal, on BLADEFORUMS (not Martial Arts Forums); on a thread discussing a knife which you don't even own?

Well, I for one have been put into my place for having thought otherwise! I don't know why he isn't more popular with the kids!

Also, It Really Is Difficult To Read A Sentence That Has Capital Letters For Every Word. Have You Ever Used A Computer/Typewriter Before?

Ultimately it is all about the knife. As others have stated, if you truly like it, then you could do something about the signature. I do own this knife.

At the time of purchase, I too did not like the signature, not because of who it represented, but just because I am more of a plain blade lover. When I received the knife, I realized that it didn't stand out as much as it did in pictures. My eyes gravitate to the blade more. When I display it, I show the Japanese character signature rather than the English side.

When Some one asks what it means while looking through the display case, I say, "It say's Bad Mother f#@%$*";)

It usually ends up becoming the non-knife collector’s favorite after that.:D

I question Seagal's claims that he has worked with the CIA. To this day there has been no proof of those claims. Of course, it's the CIA and if he did work with them there would be no such documentation. How convenient. I'm sure he and the host of the Gong Show went on many CIA missions together. :jerkit:

He is known to be rather rough with his stuntworkers. Gene LeBell, famed stuntman and judoka, took exception to his behavior on the set of a movie and embarrassed Seagal badly. It is rumored that LeBell applied a choke on Seagal and Seagal crapped his pants. :D

A lotta people here wanna knock Seagall. Sure he's fat, ugly and a rumored wife beater but hey if you like him more power to you. Norris is so old his social security card says 1 on it. He wears enough die in his hair to personally drown the bad guys when he round house kicks them but lot's a guys here are Norris fan boys. Judge the knife on the knife.

Yeah, as I understand it, he testified in an extortion trial. He'd apparently been threatened by the Russian mob or some such, and was called on to testify to it. Allegedly all his money from the movies he did went to the mob or some such thing like that.

Don't like the signature, blast it off. I liked Steven's movies when I was a kid. Certainly more than Mr. Van Damme. Then, again, the only other cop movies I watched were the "police academy" movies. Yeah, his acting isn't really all that diverse, but I still think Aikido is cool. Time's been hard on ol' steve, though!

Was this before or after Kelly LeBrock? I'll give him props for nailing the Wierd Science hottie.

Oh, I also heard that the late Curt "Mr. Perfect" Hennig was a fan of his and approached him at an airport. Apparently Seagal did not hold pro-wrestlers in such high regard and said some pretty disrespectful things to Mr. Perfect. Mr. Perfect, who is known to have a grip of iron, shook Seagal's hand and put in a vise like grip bringing Seagal to his knees. Only a rumor but I hope it's true. :D

I had much the same reaction as many of you when I first saw the knife: "What's this? A knife with Steven Segal's signature on it? I don't think so." Says nothing about the quality of the knife or the other aspects of its looks, but a knife with Segal's signature on it is not for me.

As far as his movies: I used to like them. But I think Under Siege (the first one) was pretty-much his last good movie where he was still reasonably in shape. In the second Under Siege ("Dark something-or-other"), you can see he's getting out of shape. By Glimmerman (a good movie, IMO), you can really see it. I think he used to do all (most?) of his own stunts. I believe I read somewhere that now he uses stand-ins for anything more strenuous than talking or walking.

I don't recall the specifics, but I believe he used to be an accomplished martial artist. Was a professional bodyguard for a while, I think. Maybe even ran his own security company? Whatever. I'm sure somebody motivated enough could find out the real story. (That wouldn't be me.)

One good thing about Seagals movie titles like: Above the Law, Marked for Death, and Out for Justice, etc, is that they are Easy to Pronounce. :D

I like the design of the knife, but hate the signature.

As far as Seagal's movies are conerned, I have liked quite a few of them. One that I really didn't like was On Deadly Ground.

Steven Seagal is a 7th Dan in Aikido.

:D

It was his first wife. A japanese woman. Kelly LeBrock was his third wife.

Apparently, His first wife and her father had several martial arts studios in Japan. He wanted to open one in the states and she backed him financially. Once in the US he married a soap opera actress without ever telling (or divorcing) his first wife who stayed in Japan while he got things up and running.

Class act :jerkit:

I have the knife and love it. The ray skin fits perfectly and the blade opens with an easy flick, locks up securely and fits my hand nicely. So the company chose to put his signature on it to help sales. Didn't bother me any. As a martial artist I can respect the man regardless of the quality of his movies. I've seen a couple and they're not great but they're better than many other "action" movies.
Forget about the signature, Kershaw made a great knife.

Well i can see that there is lot of heresay going on and it seems that no one that has commented has met Mr. Segal. I met Steven Segal some years back at the Bladeshow in Atlanta, Mr. Segal was in the company of Ken Onion who i was untroduced to by a good friend and knife maker Bub Worrel (R.I.P.). Steven was both a gentleman and very knowledgeable in the martial arts of which he holds belts in several disciplines. He was also super nice and took the time to say hello to anyone that stopped to say hello to him. He and Ken Onion seem to be very good friends and steven also knows knives pretty good actually he had prchased several customs at the show that he was passing around for us to look at. We sat and talked until the early morning hours at which time i had to get some sleep, but not before Steve invited me to breakfast. He is also a 1911 .45 collector and we talked .45's for a while, which he is also very knowledgeable in. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and i respect that, but i must say he is a guy i don't think i would want to tangle with, he is a big one. As a note, i did handle the original Segal folder Ken Onion made for him and it was "SUPER NICE". And a fact that a lot of people don't know is that he donates the majority of his movie earnings and royalties to childrens charities. He said he has other investments and "those kids need it more them me".

If Kershaw re-releases the knife as the "Kershaw Seagull" and replaces the signature with a graphic etch of a seagull in flight then it should be a big hit. :D
