KITH 2005-pics

Tom (Shappa) finally got his knife from me, so I can share some pictures! Like everyone else I forgot to measure it before I mailed it. The knife is 1/8" thick 1084 with a clay heat treat. Convex edge with a little teensy weensy V-grind bevel so you can still sharpen it normally if you want. This is the last knife I made doing the grinds completely with files, and the first knife I've ever marked (using crappy tool markers right now, but eventually I'll get the real thing). The handle is F18 carbon fiber with black Micarta pins and a stainless steel thong hole liner. Sheath is ultra-minimal multicarry Concealex. The knife is in Fred Perrin's Street Bowie style, which is one of my all-time favorite patterns. This thing is lean and mean, but would work fine for utility use, too.

Great knives from everyone. Has everyone shared their pictures or are people still waiting on knives. Hopefully I was the last straggler!

I got mine from Larry(Nowicki) today. Hope he will post some pics.......about 11-1/2" OAL with a 7" blade fighter style and a nice leather sheath.
Larry....tell us about it.......I like the handle and the butt cap(cool texture)!
Nice job. :D
Thanks
Mace

P.S. The only thing is.............it didn't come in a hat.

Mark Williams gave me a piece of Dahl Sheep horn a while back. I tried to get some more because I liked the way it fit in my hand. I drew up some picts and designs till if found something I liked. Still couldn't find another horn like it so I decided to try to duplicate it in wood. I needed to do the KITH so it became the design I would try. The steel was to be 5160 and I thought I would try to forge my first S guard. I had a control arm from a John Deer tractor. I was told it was 5160. I forged the blade first and edge quenched. Then the guard. I got a piece of ebony and cut and ground the handle. Drilling the tang hole was a new experience. The but cap was easy. The texture on the guard and the but cape are just the rough finish out of the forge, buffed with a wire wheel. The blade and the handle were taken to 600 grit ( hand rubbed at the end). The blade was buffed grey and white.
I don't like to sew and I like rivets....... so.......The sheath is riveted leather died black to match the handle. Everything got a final buff with Renaissance Wax.
Glad you like it.

Larry

Added: I'll add some more picts this weekend

I apologize for not getting here sooner, but I dont check in so often, and missed the thread. I received my knife from Paul Moore of Columbus, Mississippi about several weeks ago. VERY NICE. L-6 drop point hunter with full tang and applied scales of walnut and Myrtle burl (I think I got the right). Very nicely ground and very sharp. I tested it out on the dead fall walnut and locust, and it works well and holds an edge. The sheath was very nice too. If I get a sunny day I will take a pic to post. And a nice plaited lanyard. Using the lanyard and an extended grip adds much to the chopping power.

P.S. The only thing is.............it didn't come in a hat.

For some reason the hat kept getting holes in it and people would reach in and come back out missing fingers, so for safety we dropped the hat part. :D

I am going to get pic up of the knife that I got from Jason Magruder this weekend. Sorry that it has taken me so long Jason. I just got my brothers camera today. The world has conspired against me to get these pics up and getting my knife to Brian Goode. Flooded basement that rusted most of my steel and his knife the latest. This is why I have been more or less absent from the forums of late. Sorry guys I am trying to get everything straight. Like I told Brian in my email to him feel free to blast me because I am so far behind. I feel I deserve it.

Man, that sucks! Just call him and do this:

Mark: Hello, is Brian there?
Brian: Yes, this is he.
M: Yeah, this is Mark Nelson, you know, from Bladeforums?
B: Oh yeah, how's it going?
M: Not too well. My basement flooded and your knife got kind of rustmbflp.
B: What's that? I didn't catch that?
M: Your knife is sort of rustmghm.
B: Did you say "rustic?" I love rustic knives! I can't wait!
M: Gotta go! You'll get it soon!

That should work.

not yet..... call me patient :D

well I guess you are Brian...

I only get a week to make the two I'm working on with sheaths :footinmou
:)

maybe he could pass his on and drop out if he has too much to do..
just a thought... :)

If I dont get a knife this year I want in on next years KITH and I aint making a knife :)

Steve
not saying what you should do or not..
since Mark has not posted here for a while ,
if it were me in charge of this whole thing
I'd make a friendly call to him.
get a confirmed date of delivery of Brian's knife or ask him to drop out and give up the knife he received.. just a fair thought wouldn't you say?

I'm feeling bad enough about it, I'm thinking about making one to compensate Brain for the knife he should have gotten from Mark..
a good while ago .. rusted steel or not ..,, :(

dont spend your time on me Dan. I am not upset about not getting a knife but just thought I'd remind everyone I didnt get one so when the 2006 KITH comes up everyone can learn from the 2005 KITH mistakes :D

Brain ..
it's a mistake that is learned to late though..and will deter others next time..
if you're not upset at all.. you're a better man than I am.

for me it's not the knife it's the word of another that knew the deal in the
beginning. though I know we all have problems and set backs, but if that is the case
the thing to do is drop out and give up the one received and be done with it...

if not it will only add to the problems of the next KITH deal..
I know you and I will both still join the next one but others may think
twice about it..and that's what hurts me here...

If I make you one because of this deal (if it goes bad for you,)
that makes me feel good .. to right a wrong even if it's for someone else..

kind of like making for a collaboration or donation,( those when I
can) give me the same feeling. much better than selling them :)

Your too kind Dan. Its that kind of mentality that makes me love the world of knifemaking. Its the biggest hearted hobby / creative disapline I know of :D

I'd recoment the KITH project to everyone.
