KITH 2005-pics

I had thought about offering to make one to make up Brian's loss, too. Obviously there are some problems with the current scheme for the KITH program.

Perhaps the people involved could send their knives to the person running the show and then when a 'drop dead' date was passed, that person could send them out to each one who had sent one in.

I have an email into Mark. I don't have his telephone number (something else that will change for next time), so I can't call, but I checked his activity and I see that he is posting Bladeforums on a regular basis still. If he's not planning on making a knife for Brian he absolutely should pass his knife along. I think the rule was pretty clear that the trade was a trade, not a "give me a knife and maybe I'll get around to making one for the next guy."

I think we've done the KITH trade three years now and this last one was the most problematic. People were dropping out left and right, etc, but this is the only time someone hasn't come through with a knife before. Let's give Mark the benefit of the doubt. I'll wait for a day or two until I hear back from him, then we may need to start up a Good, Bad, Ugly forum post about this, which I do not want to do if at all possible. I tend to give the benefit of the doubt, but I sure wish I'd heard from Brian about this sooner than last week! This is going to be like trying to collect from one of my patients who I haven't seen in 6 months! :grumpy:

Chiro - I just didnt want to raise a fuss. LEt me know what Mark says and we'll all go from there.
Thanks fellas :D

Hey guys here is the text of the email that i sent to Steve.

Hey Steve. First let me say that I am sorry that I am
> so late with my KITH. I have emailed Brian before that
> I have not forgotten him and that will get him the
> knife. I had a start of 2005 that would be a comedy of
> errors if it was in any way funny. I had a knife 90%
> finished, working on the sheath really when my
> basement flooded ruining most of my supplies and some
> of the equipment that I had. I stored pool chemicals
> in my basement along with my knife stuff. The knife
> became very rusted with lots of nasty pits from the
> mix of water and chemicals. By the time I got rid of
> the rust and pits the knife was a joke and something I
> would have been ashamed to send to Brian. Getting my
> basement repaired so that I could have a place to work
> was a ordeal in and of itself. I have a one man pool
> service so this time of year, for the past few months,
> is when I make most of my money for the year so I have
> been very busy, 14-15 hour days are the norm right
> now. I have to do the work now so that by the winter I
> have made enough money to cover the slow time. On top
> of this my father has been sick on and off and in the
> hospital several times, he live a couple of hours from
> me so many of my off days I have spent dealing with
> him. You may have noticed that I have been absent more
> or less from the forums of late. Part of this is
> because of my lack of time but also it is because I
> have not yet gotten Brain his KITH. I am more then a
> bit embarrassed and ashamed that I have not held up my
> end of the bargain yet. I have two S7 blades finished
> enough to send them to get heattreated but I have not
> emailed Brain that I hope to get him his knife soon
> because I have done so in the past but did not come
> through for him. I am not trying to make excuses by
> telling you these things, there is no excuse for me
> being as late as I am. I can only say that I am sorry
> and that I will complete my KITH and get it to Brian
> as soon as I can. In a email, some time ago, I told
> him I was sorry and something along the lines that he
> could feel free to bash me on the forum. I would say
> that I deserved it. So there it is from my end Steve.
> I can email Brian and let him know the deal or you can
> forward this to him if you wish. So Brian if you see
> this I am very sorry and will do what is needed to
> make this right. Beyond that I do not know what I can
> say really. My phone number is (770) 595-0397 if you
> need to call me. That is my work cell so if I do not
> pick up leave me a message if you wish and I will get
> back to you ASAP.
> Mark

All that being said I should have been more of a stand up guy and addressed these issues with Brian and with everyone here before now. You all are too good of a group of guys for me to have not done so and I ask that you forgive me for not communicating about this more and sooner. I will do the right thing on this and I hope that everyone here will undertsand where I am coming from. I am ready to take my lumps because I deserve them.

Mark

Brian, check your email, I heard back from Mark.

Steve, a couple of other people mentioned that solution, too. The reason I generally tried to avoid that was:
1) It's a lot of work for me to open all the packages, make sure there's a knife inside, repackage, relabel and send.
2) Expense: I don't want to pay shipping, delivery confirmation and insurance on 15 knives, although if each maker who does it prepays shipping and includes a label or something I guess that would do it?
3) What if the maker made the knife, but it sucks. Is it my resopnsibility to figure out quality issues, too, or just send 'em along.
4) I would be tempted to change my mind about the order of the list "Oops. MY name was over HERE not over THERE..." and cherry pick the best knife (kidding).

But, it's something to think about for next year, for sure. I will check a couple other sites and see how they manage theirs...

this is an honor give..
and that should not have to be done ,, if we are honorable right..
mark I see the problems you have, we all have them, it would take me all day to mention a few of mine in the last year.. but it's not the point..

Brain is the type of guy that will not complain and will wait forever and still not say much about it.
I find myself with customers like that and it's easy to , not meaning to , to
take and unintentional advantage of that.. I think you all know what I mean..

personally I think you are left with being fair minded, giving Brian a time of delivery and if not delivered said knife that it's time to step back and call it quits and give up the knife you received.. it's only fair,,
sometimes it's better to be self-defeated then it is to lose face.

just my 2 cents.
and I sure hope you are not offended by me being so blunt.. :(

Dan I am glad that you are as blunt as you are. In truth you could have been much more blunt. I have exchanged emails with Brain and I am sending the knife that I got to him. It is only fair as you say Dan and you are correct in saying that I do not deserve to keep the knife I got. I am sorry about this and I hope that in the future I can make up for this to all involved. I did not mean for my post above to sound like I was saying poor little me or anything that was not my intent. I was hoping that it would show that I had no intent to take advantage of anyone involved in the KITH.

In No way do I have hard feelings Mark. No problem and like i said, when you get your knife done I'll be glad to send you the one you received back in exchange :D

Mark, I think you're doing a very stand-up thing. This is a nice end to what could've been a big problem. Way to go, guys!

Here's a good idea for improving the next KITH, from our good friends at British Blades: wait and compile the list once people are actually finished with the knife. So, in other words, it could be a general announcment of "here's the finish date, here are the rules, here are the criteria for knives that qualify, and if you get done by such-and-such date, post is XYZ thread that you're done, and once all the names are in within ABC period of time, that's the list." What do you think?

very nice knives guys!
I love pictures thanks for taking the time to post them

thanks Mark
I don't or didn't want to put you in a spot to put yourself in a tighter spot
realistically ... if you know what I mean..
it would be much better to go for it on the next one..
it would for me anyway.. :D I hope all the troubles turn to the best for you..
they seam to give us character and wisdom..

I just wanted to say how nice I think this was all handled...very honorable.

Now, is that the last of the knives? Everyone get one?

Mark, don't worry...we all know life takes a turn and some things become more important than others......hope your father is doing alright.

Haven't had this thread on my mind for a wnile and I was just thinking I hadn't posted picts of the knife I got from Tom Clegg, (possum 422).
Great fit and finish. Fits in the hand comfortable. I like the filework. Sheath works well with the knife.. Great combo all around. Maybe he will put up some spects.
