Kizer 5404a2

A very good deal on the Kizers for sure. But you are right, Spyderco is going to be hard on the wallet this year. :D

Tom

Luck for me I don't like spyderco knives. I want to like their manix but I just can't. Though I do like the Southard. So I lied. I like 1.

Came in yesterday morning. I must say that I'm pretty impressed. The only fault I have with it is the non presentation side of the blade has a few blemishes that cant really be captured on camera, but are there nonetheless. Other than that the grind lines and tip look really good, has bank vault lock up with zero side to side, or up and down play. Balance is good for such a big knife as well as the flipping action itself. I feel really good for having $104.95 in it. Overall length is 9.50, Blade length 4.25" 0.15 thick and weighs 7.66 ounces. Here's some pics....

Nice pics, McLovin! :D

Is that G10 on the presentation side? How grippy is it?

I'll be damned if that isn't one substantial knife!

Looks great, my slightly smaller version should be here tomorrow, it's VG10 for the blade steel.

I think that is just a rumor. I have never seen anything proving that CPM actually sells steel to Kizer. The steel on many of the Kizer knives almost looks like a molded form with a course or rough finish on some of the S35v blades. I would like to see a copy of an actual testing lab's report. I'm afraid we will find out that these are really a nice surgical stainless steel that is mislabeled.

Or maybe they are selling blemished, stained, or inferior S35v steel blades.

I have a Kizer model #Ki5401A1 that I purchased about a year ago for $160 which was a great price at the time. Two things I can surely say about the knife is that it is really beautiful - mine was flawless - and is really big. My model is the blue scalloped titanium with a flame anodized multi-colored but subdued design on both sides. The blade itself is 4-1/8"x0.18"x1-3/8", was crazy sharp out of the box, and locks up like a bank vault. According to all the research I did prior to my purchase, the blade steel is S35VN. I have no reason to doubt that it is S35VN. The only two downsides I find to the knife is that it is truly huge to the point that it is, to me, too big to pocket carry; and it does not open using either the thumbstuds or the flipper, without some wrist flick. Don't know if it's a matter of an inferior pivot bushing or that the blade, being so huge, just has too much inertia to overcome. Overall, it's great knife, especially considering it's price, and it holds an honored place in my collection.

All this talk is making me want to check these knives out. Any models in particular I should be looking at?

Kizer quality seems to be pretty consistent from one model to the next. Pick the pattern and size you like and you should be good to go. :)

I also remember someone saying you could call Crucible and they will confirm it. And, I don't think all Kizer blades are blemished either. Mines hard to see. You really have to look for it.

So far, I've owned two Kizer's. First one was a 405. Came off center and had lots of blade play, so I returned it. The second was the 3404a2. It was beautiful, flawless. However, the handles were very slick and I just couldn't get past the tip down only clip. I traded it.

Now that Kizer finally has some tip-up options, I'm looking at them again. I think the 423 is very interesting, and the flashbang is cool as well. My question is for those of you with the high end Kizer's, is the quality there compared to say the Taichung Spyderco's?

$109 for the 423 seems reasonable, but at $180 plus for a Chinese knife I start to wonder.

This is an aside, of course, but if you like the Southard you might want to take a look at the Centofante Memory. It has a low profile blade like the Southard has and it's a wonderful gentleman's knife. Keep an eye on the Exchange if you're interested and you may be able to pick one up on the cheap. ;)

I don't have enough examples of either one to make a definitive statement. I just know I REALLY like my Ki3404A3. YMMV.
