KME and BKT's, A sharpening tutorial....

wasatchdan

Try a set of diamonds or get a profiling stone. I made the same mistake when I first started out and it takes forever. You need something that removes metal fast when reprofiling a blade.

Bumpin' this, yo, for the freehand sucka's out there.....

Meds are bumpin' too....just sayin'.

Oh, and Ron hasn't forgotten us, he's been undergoing some........changes in the last few months.

Changes? You ask, well, Ron asked me not to mention anything until the official release, but.......I can't the what, but I can say some stuff without giving away any of his new patents......

RECURVE SHARPENING ON A GUIDED SYSTEM!!!!!!!!!!!WTF!?!?!?!?

Better material, and some stuff that is so new, NASA had to be called in to give an official ruling!?!?!?!?

Hell yeah, KME, anything less, and its gonna be made in China.....

That's pretty cool. Just the thing for the Machax.

Thanks for the review on this Moose. I was just watching some YouTube tutorials on the KME and am very interested in this. Now that you mention NEW things I want to ask... Is anything new about the basic sharpening kit that I should hold off for, or just NEW items for other applications? I'll wait awhile if the basic kit has some improvements coming up.

I ordered the KME set up on Thursday! Can't wait to get it! Got the Arkansas stones with the diamond ultra course for reprofiling. Got the base as well.

I got the kme sharpening system with the diamond stones first and then supplemented it with a set of the natural stones, an extra coarse diamond and the translucent Arkansas (equivalent to the black Arkansas according to Ron).

A couple of points of interest. First after seeing DeanO's YouTube videos, I ordered a set of custom strops from Stropman. Absolutely fantastic for anyone interested, especially since Stropman ships the custom strops together with the compounds (black, white, green and red). Really cheap too - I'm in Canada and Rob did these for me and even with shipping it was less than $100,which is great when you consider the cost of an average strop. That said, I emailed Ron at kme a question and told him about the strops and he said to stay tuned as he was planning to release a stropping solution.

For any Canadian looking to get the KME, their dealer is Durango Kitchenware in Alberta - contact information is on the kme site. Great folks to deal with.

I've used this sharpener on a variety of knives and steels. The only one that gave me trouble using the diamond stones was a new sebenza with s35vn. I think that was simply because the edge was convexed from factory, but the natural stones made short work of it. In fact I think I've gotten better edges with the natural stones than the diamonds, which surprised me a lot.

I've never used the wicked edge, but I can't see that I'd change systems now given the success and repeatability I've had with the KME. Fantastic product.

my experience with diamond stones is that until they are broken in a bit they cut at least one grade coarser than advertised. So a brand new fine stone will cut like a medium or medium-coarse until you knock the "new" off of it.
Not a "you're wrong", just a "this is why you ran into it" tip.

Hrmmmm See I am torn between the Wicked Edge, and the KME.
The KME looks much simpler and easier to use correctly, while the Wicked Edge does both sides at once, and also can go down to a 12 degree up to a 30 degree angle instead of only a 17 -30 degree spread on the KME.
The KME is cheaper though and has a lot of accessories but so does the Wicked Edge just at a higher price point.
Anyone have or have used both ? I am really on the fence.

Thorny, you coming to the gathering? I'll bring my set up and you can try it if you want. I have the KME.

I'm pretty sure the boss, or Moose would let you too if you are there.

I wish I could CB, I'm stuck going out of town for work.
I will be going to Blade though, I bet I will see some stuff there too. Its crazy ALOT of brands of almost the same thing, out there now.
DMT makes one, Smiths, Shrade, I found quite a few when googling. I am not sure how acute an angle is overkill too, I mean do I need a 12-15 degree option per side, or is 17 degrees as acute as I would ever want ?

For what most beckers are used for 17 is actually pretty much perfect. Too much thinner and you are going to get rolling (as much as I understand it at least.) Now if it is strictly kitchen knife you want a MUCH thinner edge to slice through easier. That is just my understanding, and to be perfectly honest, I have my knives at 18 per side, and my 9 is at 20 each. I did it on my KME as well.

I'm not going to make it to blade this year, as much as I wanted to I am going to be spending the weekend in the dirt with my brother and his family.

scandi is generally pretty close to 12 on a side.
some kitchen knives are 15 on a side.
otherwise, 17-30 should be plenty.

KME will be using a new Diamond stone, something that far transcends DMT, DuoSharp, Lansky, and any other diamond stone/hone you have ever used.

The new Jewelstick for recurves is but the first of many new Diamonds to get the KME approval.

Hewlett is the original, and the only ones to have a patent on the electroplating process used to to adhere diamonds to steel.

They, will be KME's diamond hone supplier.........soon.

Is the jewelstick just for recurves? I'm seeing a "tapered diamond rod" for sale for serrated and broadheads and wondering if this is the same thing. I'm using a kme and it would be really nice to use it for recurves (ie Machax.) Thanks!

Well, you can use it on anything, but it will do a recurve easily. Just watch it when you get to the tip, those aggressive diamonds will round it in a heartbeat.

Thanks Moose... I'm thinking the tapered rod is a different part.... will check out the jewelstick...
