Knife as a symbol of survival = no go

I need more time to myself, less work time. I'm so burnt out trucking all week and running on 3 - 4 hours sleep day in and day out. Crashed my pickup (not badly at all, but still ) before christmas after falling aslep at the wheel after work.

need more days off, more time to myself. :grumpy:

I live in desert country. I always need water!....and a tin cup or tin can to boil water. Desert people dream of water, think of water, contemplate water. Knives? That's what God gave us rocks for...at least in a pinch. But water, oh how we need water. All else can be manufactured on the spot.

I want to go out in the woods with my gear and NOT run into some 21 year-old dreadlocked honkey college kids that can't stop saying "dude".

In the middle of the woods people go missing :D

I need a better compass, the US army ones look the goods with a very tough case but man are those things expensive.

Yes...but they are worth it. I love my Cammenga! I have the 3H model. It is even in a day pack! Which is now the Condor fanny pack.

I'm a little broke atm :p...I'll get one soon enough and I been keeping my eye out at various surplus stores for bargains, but retail online for one of them will keep me fed a few weeks (got laid off few months back).

Good to know they are worth the money, I figured if they're good enough for the military they're good enough for the average joe.

“Needs”, and of course “wants” are always so subjective…sounds like were in one of your classes Ken:D.

Other than time, there’s nothing else I really need or want for that matter. I even have a gorgeous wife that loves the outdoors and was mad I took my son for a hike yesterday without her (although I doubt I could get her in a buckskin bra…hmmm, that’s a challenge).

I actually think “things” are what keeps most of us out of the woods. We are always searching for the right addition to the kit and often forget the search for time to get away…at least that’s affected me at times. Also, what I need less of are “excuses”, unfortunately, with school events, work events, social events, family events, kid’s events, church events…my time gets eaten pretty quick. I just need to continually fight for better prioritization. My daughter starts college full time next year (dual enrollment as a high school senior – smart girl!), that will mess with the family time as well. Most often, “things” just give you psychological comfort and true outdoors “essentials” can be quite minimal and inexpensive. What you really need is that balance of health: mental, physical, spiritual and emotional. The last two…spiritual and emotional are what I gain from being outdoors and away from the populated hustle, bustle and madness. Sleeping out under the stars, sitting by a warm open fire, brewing up my favorite brew, doing a little stalk-hunting, traversing the puzzle of a rock face or boulder, bushwhacking to new locations to practice a little bushcraft, working a dry fly or nymph to lure out an elusive brookie, brown or rainbow trout…those are the activities I need to fight for more of…those are what give me that necessary balance in life and to really keep me from strangling or beating the crap out some incompetent, apathetic oxygen thief that I often have to deal with at work...yeah, I just need more time to maintain my balance.:D

Of course, that Diving Sparrow Parang should arrive later this week...that's a wonderful "want" that will help motivate and prioritize my “needs” of time to get out and give it a workout;)

And for you Ken, if you could just entice Rick to wear a buckskin bra...you would be half-way there...of course the whole "Amazonian" look would really need some imaginative work:eek:

What do I really need to enjoy my time being?
I need more free time and more peace of mind.
And yet I keep buying knife. Go figure.

A canine companion or two and an excuse is all I ever really need !

Same here. That's all it takes to get me out everyday I'm not working. I guess I could use lots of stuff. Metal match or some other fire starting tool, currently I only carry a disposable lighter. I have a decent rain suit but would really like to try a decent quality poncho.
Something to boil water in. A first aid kit. I could use all that stuff. And yet last I was trying to decide which Mora to finally order. I don't have one and have been More curious for awhile.

Cloths, boots, sleeping bag, backpack, lamp and ice tools are more essential for me
in my kind of field.

Which doesn't matter to me. I love knives anyway.

I don't think I really need anything at the moment. Anything that I don't have now, I've done without before, and been just fine. I may be getting close to needing a new/better headlamp. The one I have malfunctioned on a recent trip. I think that the switch kind of froze up due to the cold. If I start getting into things I want, this post will get way too long, so I won't.

I need to find my purpose in life. Would give every knife I own for that.

We all seek that. As far as I can tell, it's something we have to find for ourselves and thus cannot be guided by others, as much as others may feel the need.

That said, I'd love a little cabin on oh, say, 450+ acres here in the lovely Blue Ridge Mtns. :)

Professor.

I need a Kimber 1911 Tactical Custom II and a Mystery Ranch Big Horn. In reality I'll probably get a large stick and my oldest sons Army issue pack.

I need a good woman to come with me on the hike. Hey I already have that. A couple of times when we've been camping, I haven't even used a knife.

I need to have some of what Ken was drinking when he started this thread!!

Its was Laphroaig Quarter cask single malt. The good stuff.

I started thinking about what I needed last year versus this year for winter camping. Winter camping for my style of camping has some technical requirements particularly when it comes to clothing and sleeping gear.

Over the past two winter seasons I've pretty much addressed all my clothing needs and just recently now procured a -20 degree sleeping bag and tarp set. So now it seems like I'm good to go on the winter camping stuff. However, I started to miss my 'needs', since I don't seem to need stuff anymore...Maybe I need an excuse as to why I'm not out there at the moment....

No, as my girlfriend puts it "The process is half the fun." For instance planning a trip and day dreaming about it can be as much fun as the trip itself. Same goes for gear. Heck, we can all outfit ourselves several times over in the blade department but it's always fun to daydream about this knife that can do this or that chopper that can do that. It's a form of entertainment to most of us and a slight better than watching the boob tube.
