Knife as a symbol of survival = no go

Agreed...

""fter 40 years of age, this kind of gesture makes less and less sense......It also shows how what is anticipated is not realized. Your statement above makes a literal statement about what happens when you lend out your camp mat. However, the anticipated outcome is more like

I got a couple of self inflating pads at Rick's yard sale a few years ago..
Loaned it out to one of our aging Scouters and it came back without the valve cap..

Not Impressed...

My Venture Scouts have broken 1-2 of my personal tents now,, so they're done using my Shyte Too...

Guess what they're sleeping in from now on ??

Tarps..

Now they will learn, what works and what doesn't...

They've watched me do it for two years,, Hope they were paying attention...

Knives suck.. Well, they don't. But lets face, there are more critical pieces of gear that you need than another knife. Afterall if you need a knife, WTF are you doing on this forum? You already have fifteen or twenty knives.

What do you need to make your 'I'm going to screw off the next three days in the wilderness' complete?

You all need something....Personally, I need an amazonian girl with a buckskin bra....And maybe a new headlamp......

After that, I need....sheez mates....I don't know what I need. What do you guys knead? Bread full of yeast????

KGD wants to know!

50 cases of beer. 500lbs of lump charcoal. 200lbs of spuds. 100lbs of onions. 300 lbs cubed moose meat. A 500lb hog. Assorted herbs, garlics, spices, salt. 100lbs of whole wheat flour. Case or two of butter. Case or three of aged cheddar cheese. Big boom box , hardcore industrial music, a dozen hot goth chicks.

basically the fixings for a weekend of yummy stew, roast pig, cold beers, bannock and cheese. (and good times)

I need some high end ultralight tarps to go with all my knives, axes, machetes and merino wool clothing.

I'm pretty good for gear right now.

The only thing I really need is to either buy a new or patch my sleeping pad.:o

I want to go out in the woods with my gear and NOT run into some 21 year-old dreadlocked honkey college kids that can't stop saying "dude".

I guess you should get your ass away from the woods behind the college. Get into some real back country...Man
You should be happy some of the younger generation still enjoys the outdoors. Imho

If I was limited to one important gear item, first and foremost, it would be proper clothing. I personally like wool. I'd rather be suited up in wool and knifeless than wearing cotton jeans / sweater and carrying a $300 monster survival knife.

I also rank a good rain jacket / tarp as more important than a knife. Whenever newbies come hiking with me and ask what to bring, I ALWAYS make sure they have rain gear. You get wet in the mountains, you die.

I'd also rather have an axe than a knife. Or even a good saw...

In my country, survival isn't making figure 4's and carving wooden spoons while you wait for some food to show up. Out here, survival is avoiding hypothermia. There are PLENTY of better pieces of kit than a knife to avoid hypothermia.

Staying warm and finding shelter from the elements are the two most important parts of survival. Proper clothing is the easiest way to cover both. Next up is staying dry; a tarp will literally save your life in an icy British Columbia rain storm. Then - if you're the type who likes working a bit more to stay alive - then comes fire and shelter building. An axe or saw are both better tools than a knife for that, if you ask me.

That said, I've still spent more on knives than anything else :)
