G'day KGD
I wonder how many have the outdoor experience necessary to really know the difference between wants & needs?
After all, the purpose of marketing over the last several decades has been to convert wants into needs.
Kind regards
Mick
Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you, Mick. This is something I have been wanting to start a thread about for a while now. IMO, experience is the "need" killer. Once you are in a position to work/live these skills on a daily basis, you quickly separate the wheat from the chaff. The difficult part is to face that reality and remain honest to yourself. It's okay to "want" stuff and seek out the pleasures of buying new gear... but convincing yourself that it is a "need" can be dangerous for a couple reasons..
1. Your pack tends to gain weight rather quickly as you stuff it full of new needs. This can slow you down and place undue stress on your body. This is the most obvious drawback and can be dealt with rather easily with lightweight alternatives.
2. You may unknowingly/subconsciously downplay or undermine your own ability to adapt and overcome... to make due without. It's perfectly fine to "want" to take that camp stove with you for convenience, but if you neglect (or never learn, for that matter) proper fire management and cooking techniques, you are only doing yourself (and anyone who may someday count on you) a disservice. You already have fifteen or twenty knives.
A heady glass bubbler.![]()
I live in desert country. I always need water!....and a tin cup or tin can to boil water. Desert people dream of water, think of water, contemplate water. Knives? That's what God gave us rocks for...at least in a pinch. But water, oh how we need water. All else can be manufactured on the spot.
About June or July the state issues a "burn ban"..light a blade of grass and 52 hundred FS Rangers,Game Wardens and local VFD's will swarm down and whack you stupid with all manner of rakes, hoes and shovels! I "want" a Svea but I'm pretty sure a Coleman 442 will work just fine.
