Knife as a symbol of survival = no go

I need a way to convince the Mrs. (who doesn't spend money on purses, jewelry, etc.) that I need a Glock in .45 .

a better hat....and more time for the out of doors. im not even trippin on knives or gear at the moment (although i did pick up a fiskars brush axe).

A good compact shovel. I want to try a dang coal bed.

if going into the backwoods is THE way for one to reconnect with the earth, i now know that i no longer need shoes...
i also won't be needing knives as long as i still have a good set of teeth.
but what i do need to find is a solution to outdoors sanitary hygiene with the eventual depletion of tootsie rolls.

A new fire steel. My kids used my Swedish fire steel and it now looks like an hour glass. :D and a new led flash light.

These days time is what I need most. Aside from that a good message would be nice!

Some one asked for led lights, i tried many and have a recommendation.

Tikka Plus and Streamlight stylus pro. Both are great and both use AAA batteries. Those two are all the lights I need for camping.

G'day KGD

....You all need something!
I wonder how many have the outdoor experience necessary to really know the difference between wants & needs?

After all, the purpose of marketing over the last several decades has been to convert wants into needs. :D

Kind regards
Mick

Very good observation...I fight that with my kids every trip:D I do know that "wants" usually weigh a lot more than "needs"...:D

I fight that with myself everytime i come on here and i usually lose:foot::D

A few hundred square miles of mountain ground all to myself would be pretty nice.

I'll take a bit of that Laphroaig Quarter Cask as well. Not huge on the scotch but Laphroaig is a nice dram to switch things up from my usual bourbon.

It should be the goal of everyone to be able to endure a survival situation with nothing but the clothes on there backs. Tools are for speed and comfort IMO.

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you, Mick. This is something I have been wanting to start a thread about for a while now. IMO, experience is the "need" killer. Once you are in a position to work/live these skills on a daily basis, you quickly separate the wheat from the chaff. The difficult part is to face that reality and remain honest to yourself. It's okay to "want" stuff and seek out the pleasures of buying new gear... but convincing yourself that it is a "need" can be dangerous for a couple reasons..

1. Your pack tends to gain weight rather quickly as you stuff it full of new needs. This can slow you down and place undue stress on your body. This is the most obvious drawback and can be dealt with rather easily with lightweight alternatives.
2. You may unknowingly/subconsciously downplay or undermine your own ability to adapt and overcome... to make due without. It's perfectly fine to "want" to take that camp stove with you for convenience, but if you neglect (or never learn, for that matter) proper fire management and cooking techniques, you are only doing yourself (and anyone who may someday count on you) a disservice.

That doesn't means you should feel guilty or be afraid of buying new stuff... just be aware of "want vs. need" and try to elevate your personal skills to decrease the severity of inevitable gear failure.

I need a shovel...(currently dumping snow here at a rate of 3 inches per hour, and not scheduled to quit until we have about 20 inches).

Do they make something to improve visibility in 40 mph winds during a snow storm like this? That is what they are predicting...and my kids are fighting like cats in a burlap sack...I have GOT to get them outside!

I want to go out in the woods with my gear and NOT run into some 21 year-old dreadlocked honkey college kids that can't stop saying "dude".

Dude! What do you got against us 21 year old honkey college kids?!:D

I NEED:

More time to go backpacking.
Better negotiating skills to get my wife to let me buy my wants...

I WANT:

SMD Haven tent system
A lighter jacket that fits better now that I lost weight
Smartwool shirt
Carbon fiber bear canister!
