Knife confessions

Clean an animal or fish with a folder a couple times, and you'll quickly see the allure. ;-)

I'm actually considering picking up the new version Benchmade Steep Country fixed blade when it is released soon because I plan on going hunting for the first time later this year :) If my plans work out, then I'll have a need for a fixed blade. Up until this point, I haven't though.

After spending hundreds of dollars on higher end knives, I still think the Douk Douk is the closest thing to perfection in a folder I've encountered...

It's going to sound weird, but I actually like a small amount of lock stick. If I have a knife that has no lock stick, I have it in the back of my head that the lock isn't fully engaged. I know that it isn't a rational way of thinking but I cant help it. I far prefer a knife that has a slight pop to the lock release than one without.

But...but...you're THE one-knife person...

My confession: I've owned a lot of knives, but never all at one time - I get 'em, I learn what I like and dislike, I move 'em along. I would love to have the One True Knife, but I'm not sure I'll ever get there...I've even started learning to make knives (very slowly!) with the idea that once I know how, I'll make the One True Knife for myself. I'm just not sure what that would be, yet.

Sorry in advance as many might disagree with things I'm about to say, and I know that these things are kinda judgemental and wrong, but I can't change the way I feel...
So, when I heard the word "knife" first thing to my mind is the plain kitchen knife you eat with that has mystery stainless steel and plastic handle, second one is the plain old fixed blade, drop point full tang knife with wooden handle scales, and brass finger guard, third thing coming to my mind is a basic drop point folder.
My confessions:

1. In my opinion folders are inferior to fixed blades.

2. I associate balisongs, autos and other such knives with crime.

3. I think karambits are really poor choice unless you're training martial arts.

4. I see Puuko and Leuku knives as perfect opportunity to lose your fingers if you ever decide to stab anything, and their rounded handles are nightmare to conceal, and good luck chopping with them, especially if your hands get wet.

5. I just strongly dislike scandi grind, I won't even go into it.

6. I think that carrying only Leatherman, SAK or slipjoint is for old people.

7. Serrated spines or knuckle guards are kinda "mall ninja" in my opinion...

8. Sheepsfoot blades are kinda "child's knife" in my opinion.

9. Ever since my now EX GF called Mora "Dishgloves knife" - I can't stop thinking of them in such way.

10. I think Ka-Bar USMC is grossly overhyped. I also can't understand how come every video in which the youtuber breaks one is full of fanboys insulting him in the comment section because the knife broke.

I've been making knives for a few years as a hobby and can tell you that you will never build your "The One" folder. Just the same as you have not found it with all the models you've passed along. In the end you make a bunch of knives and move them along because there is always that voice in the back of our heads that says "Hay, what is this.. I need to check that out." Something new will always catch your eye. I like to say I'm practical but with somethings I'm not. But that's why I work hard so I can splurge on some things for myself if that's what makes me happy. The search is part of the fun. But for sure keep going with the knife making. It's a great hobby. Just don't ever take orders from people no matter how much they ask.. then it goes for a joyful hobby to work. Trust me..

I will add that while I love my folding knives and carry everyday b/c I was taught to be prepared, the reality of 99% of their use is:
1. Open/breakdown boxes
2. Open mail
3. Cut off concert/event bracelets
4. Cut loose strings
5. Cut zip-ties
6. Strip wire
7. Clean fingernails
8. Dig out wood/metal splinters
9. Cut rope/para cord
10. Scrape something off something

Thank god they make a $500 tool to do that..

Here are my confessions: but keep in mind that ymmv!

1. No hollow ground knives for me - Especially on fixed blade knives - They weaken the knife unnecessarily.
2. I really dislike finger choils and overly long ricassos - reduces the usable blade length - waste the best controlled part of the knife - stuff gets snagged there.
3. For the life of me I cannot get a Mora sharp - I got different scandis that get hair popping sharp.
4. I don't like shiny blades and colorful handles - I'll take black until I find something darker.
5. I like sharpened prybars, even though I have nearly no real world use for it and it make some cutting tasks harder.
6. Handle before blade - I'm quite spoiled by my Beckers.

Addicted to knives with no Spydercos? Tisk, tisk! Get with the program already! :D

You’re right on about heat treatment btw.

You're right, I do need to get with it. I think my problem is that there's so many good Spyderco knives and designs I like, that I'm not sure where to start and which one to get. I think I'm letting myself get overwhelmed, but I do have one I plan to get very soon. I want the PM2 DLT exclusive with CruWear and the purple handle/black blade. But then I'm thinking if I should just wait until Rivers Edge Cutlery gets a new batch of their exclusive PM2 with the tan/brown coated blade and olive drab handle in CTS-204p steel. I can get it off eBay, but the mark up is ridiculous, so I figured I'd wait and get it at market price. These decisions are what end up stalling me from buying Spyderco knives. One knife I'm for sure going to get soon is the PM3 in Maxemet. I just keep buying other knives first and never get around to it, but I need to just commit and get me a Spyderco already. That was a difficult confession to get off my chest.

That would indeed change things. If I get it, I'd be the one pocket knife and one fixed blade person. Doesn't have quite the same ring to it though ;) As mentioned, it simply comes down to when (it's not an if) I start hunting. I've wanted to do it for years and years, and this fall it might finally come to fruition if the stars align. I'm certainly hoping so.

That's a really good reason to get a fixed blade. There are people who use a folder for that, but it's not great. Hope those stars align for you soon!
