Knife confessions

collecting seriously since the early 1980s...

MAJOR Spyderco Fanboy... (hanging my head)

Don't really like thumb-studs... (not very coordinated)

Been carrying a Spyderco Military since 1998... can't shake it...

I buy MULTIPLES of knives I like... whether or not I can afford them...

I have collections of knives that I am not proud of... Brous, Brad Duncan, CRKT, Gerber... etc...

I cut myself as often as I cut the intended object...

I love gadgets.........buying knives is more about getting a new gadget than real need.
Yea this is me. I've had the pleasure of owning quite a few knives, ranging from $60 ones to $1500 customs. I don't need a knife 99% of the time. I could probably get by with the sharp part of a key and be fine. They few times I do need a knife are usually at home, in which I could grab a pair of scissors, kitchen knife, utility knife, etc...

But I love pocket knives and I wont stop buying/selling/trading them!

Sorry in advance as many might disagree with things I'm about to say, and I know that these things are kinda judgemental and wrong, but I can't change the way I feel...
So, when I heard the word "knife" first thing to my mind is the plain kitchen knife you eat with that has mystery stainless steel and plastic handle, second one is the plain old fixed blade, drop point full tang knife with wooden handle scales, and brass finger guard, third thing coming to my mind is a basic drop point folder.
My confessions:

1. In my opinion folders are inferior to fixed blades.

2. I associate balisongs, autos and other such knives with crime.

3. I think karambits are really poor choice unless you're training martial arts.

4. I see Puuko and Leuku knives as perfect opportunity to lose your fingers if you ever decide to stab anything, and their rounded handles are nightmare to conceal, and good luck chopping with them, especially if your hands get wet.

5. I just strongly dislike scandi grind, I won't even go into it.

6. I think that carrying only Leatherman, SAK or slipjoint is for old people.

7. Serrated spines or knuckle guards are kinda "mall ninja" in my opinion...

8. Sheepsfoot blades are kinda "child's knife" in my opinion.

9. Ever since my now EX GF called Mora "Dishgloves knife" - I can't stop thinking of them in such way.

10. I think Ka-Bar USMC is grossly overhyped. I also can't understand how come every video in which the youtuber breaks one is full of fanboys insulting him in the comment section because the knife broke.

People are tired of idiot YouTubers batonning knives that were never designed for it.

Very interesting topic, I’ll have a go!

1. I still think the Rambo First Blood knife is still the sexiest knife ever made.
2. I’ve been into knives for 10 years and never purchased a knife over $100.
3. I love my SAK and find it incredibly useful, mainly the Tweezers.
4. I’d rather spend an afternoon batonning wood with a chopper than use an axe. I use an axe only for wood larger than about 7” in diameter.
5. I see no functionality in tantos, and would never carry one.
6. I only buy about one knife per year, and yet I look at all knives for sale on this site daily.

I agree. Never liked the Opinel..... Or the Buck 110...or the PM2.
I’m not the biggest fan of the PM2 and Para3 as well. The tip is too fragile for my uses. I chipped the tip on my Para3 twice opening a blister pack and once trying to cut some hardened plastic that a Klein screwdriver was packaged in.
I went on a service call and had to strip some extremely hard/old UF cable. Had my PM2 and chipped the tip trying to strip the outer jacket. Great knives but just don’t instill the confidence I like for my day to day uses

I get you 100%, but issue is that they also break from chopping sometimes, which I also agree isn't what that knife was designed for.

But I also guess YouTubers are tired of fanboys calling the USMC "ultimate knife/best knife ever..." and so on... or they simply enjoy working them up. Or they do it for attention/clicks...

Here on the forums we always talk about the right tool for the job, not prying etc.

I think we forget about choosing the right knife for the job. 99.9% of the time a PM2 or other light to medium use knife is fine.

If I were in an occupation that required I use it for medium to heavy duty, my Manix 2 is great.

Speaking of the PM2...

I don't think the compression lock is all that spectacular. Yes I said it. Kill me.

However, I don't need the strongest lock on the planet. If I did, I'm doing something wrong.

The CBBL will always be my favorite though. Ambidextrous, and, in my opinion, stronger and more reliable than the axis and it's omega springs.

Next confession.

Traditionals do nothing for me. Nor do lockbacks.

I dislike black handles except CF. The para 3 Spy27 lightweight is the only "plastic" handled knife.

This "journey" has made me extremely picky. Makes me think of being a kid and refusing to eat brussel sprouts. Still hate them too.

If there is any confession you want to make, this would be a thread for it.
Feel free to confess anything, if you have no idea what to say, some examples are below. Enjoy :D

Do you like mall ninja knives?

Do you abuse your knives?

Ever neglected a knife? (Let it rust and so on)

Ever lied about your knife purchases? (Won it on giveaway/very good deal/gift from a friend)

Is there a brand everyone seems to love but you simply hate it?

Did you ever promise yourself you'll buy just one more knife?

EDIT: My apologies, such thread already exists.

I bought a couple of knives when first getting into the habit that I will never admit to anyone on BF.

Time to come clean...

I like Gerber’s MP-600 and 400 multi-tools better than my Leatherman Wave.

I didn't know or care about blade play before I got into the knife hobby "proper"
As just a dude using a knife, a small amount of blade play wasn't noticed and didn't effect me (luckily)

I like a lot of SOG knives that would get/ have gotten pretty bad reviews (at least on Blade Forums, but mostly You Tube as well)
I'll sharpen or polish knives out of boredom whether they need it or not
I regret using any sort of power equipment to sharpen a knife unless absolutely necessary
Regret abusing an Emerson CQC 7 to see if it lived up to the hype. It did, but I would've gotten more years out of a nice blade
had I not been so rough on it.
I've mistakenly cut myself bad enough for stitches at least 5 times and got stitched at least 3 of those :D
and always felt dumb afterwards
The list goes on, I've experienced joy tenfold to any regret from knives and blades :)

I disqualify most traditionals because I don't like jigged bone or stag handles. I still acquire some knives that I know I'll never carry and just sell off or give away at some point.
I also own the crkt brown turd knife(wrinkle) and kinda like it.

I do not like cold steel or spyderco, they do not appeal to me.

I'll give cold steel credit for the $/lb. aspect (and admittedly think the 4-Max is all right), but I've since stopped the cheaper impulse buys to go for overall (USA made) quality for things I'll use.

Spyderco is ok though the only blade I can say I really like is the Shaman, but that's about it...
