Knife Manufacturers You Avoid

GMAHN - I lived in the Keys for over 11 years and you would be penalized there for using 'anecdotal' as is has too many syllables for us Margaritaville types:D

frost knives, purchased a "collector set" knives with a toy pu, boy was I disapointed

These threads are nothing but a place for people to slander companies with anecdotal problems and if you all avoided every company listed in this thread none of you would have a place to buy a knife that wasn't a custom. These threads are not constructive and should be removed by the moderator.

That may be your opinion but this thread at least for me is very constructive and gives me a feel for many knife companies people on the forum generally avoid. So far nobody is slandering companies and is only sharing their experiences with said companies.

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. If people were just saying I hate cold steel, BM, spyderco, sog, cs etc... without providing reasoning it would not be constructive. But most people are providing legitimate reasons for not liking particular companies like quality control issues, gritty opening, mystery steel and such and if they dont they tend to say "i dont like the designs". If all the answers were simply based on not liking the designs or bashing companies they dont really have a reason to hate I would agree with you.

Bark River, Benchmade, Boker, Zero Tolerance, Buck, Chris Reeve Knives, Al Mar, Becker, Cold Steel, Condor, CRKT, Queen, Leatherman, ESEE, Fallkniven, Case, Kershaw, Spyderco, Kabar, Mission, Ontario, Busse.

I just don't get it. I got an awesome serrated lockback folder for $5 at the gas station and I really doubt any of those hyped up brands will perform much better.

"...which knife manufacturers you avoid and why?..."
- sinsanity

wouldn't particularly wish to generalize a bias opinion;
but imo, a large company would try to cater to the appeal of every type and level of prospective buyers.
and that's reflected in a wide range of products from entry level to professional or even high collector grade.
some long standing companies have been particularly successful in having created their own niche market like Victorinox, Opinel, Frosts (Mora) Knives.
And then there are manufacturers that operate with nothing but hype.
which whose reputation as it stands now, quite honestly, do not require any further mention.

You judge knives on designs and quality, but ignore Spyderco?

When did I say i Ignore spyderco??
Had a linerlock fail on during normal use (Don't trust them anymore) I would prefer a thumb stud over a hole. not a fan of your high end steels (capable of destroying knives at work) i also don't like delicate tips... all of these are preferences on my part. I will say that the spydercos i have held where well produced, just not my cup of tea.

Try a large coldsteel folder, you would be surprised how solid they are.It could replace a fixed blade.

Yeah I've been told that quite often the past few weeks :) I should put inanet bias aside and try it for myself!

Thanks!

I am boycotting Benchmade until they produce the 42 again! ;)
I'm a mall ninja, I used to buy Cold Steel knives, I admit :P, but I like my Rajah2
I think I have seen no one criticize Spyderco yet, only Klok saying he didnt like their designs. I was the same for 2 years until I bought on an impulse the Caly 3 lurking and reading so many good reviews and I think most of my collection now is spydies. Everytime I think I bought the last one I discover another model I MUST have!

Generally, I avoid SOG because of the price (for what you get) and terrible lock up (a friend gave me an Aegis tanto to use for a day when I lost my knife and that thing had some seious wiggle no matter what I did.) Also, newer Gerber stuff. Most look cheap and the ones I have handled felt cheap. Lately, I've been buying strictly Spyderco. Not by choice, really, more like coincidence.

I try to avoid them all for the sake of my wallet, but sometimes IT still happens....

My first non Victorinox was a CRKT bladelock. Love the design, hate the steel. Seems like I needed to sharpen it after each use. Then I bought a Delica and my Spyderco addiction began.

SOG (just plain fugly), Buck folders (except the 110), Gerber (How the mighty have fallen), Bark Rver (owned a couple, they make great paperweights ), Frost (one word, Dymondwood), Taylor Brand (I am fan of S&W firearms, but the knives, not so much) and last but not least, Kershaw (they have great knives, but their designs just dont appeal to me)

I read into your msg and completely agree with your statement!

Yeah, I don't know about that one.
I'd stay away from Gerbers and Gas station knives, especially those that cost $5 and are serrated.
Just my 2 cents.

I actually handpicked a Chinese made generic folder and it's quite a lot more solid than the S&W that a friend asked me to sharpen.
