Knife Manufacturers You Avoid

I usually avoid knives in the 150+ range. I just don't see the value in them, I suppose that writes off a good few manufacturers.

strider, bark river, emerson, and now scrap yard, just for the horrible behavior of their owners.

Canal Street.

Why? Dull shield, dull handle choices, blade wobble, non existent snap and has drawer queen rather than user written all over it. Nice boxes though.....

-Anything made in China, even if it says 440 stainless
-Gerber, customer service is terrible, tools are terrible, and the Bear Grylls line. Yuck!
-Crkt, knives are okay, but I would rather get a Kershaw
-Coleman line of tools, just SAK knock offs, and made in India
-Mtech- I do like the handle of the one have, but the lock fails and the blade seems to be made out of a coat hanger.

Gerber, CRKT and Buck for sure. Bad experiences with those three. Few others I'm borderline with.

There's more brands I like than I dislike though. :D

Why Buck? I have owned so many Buck knives, and they hold one hell of an edge! I havr always carried one, and had served so many purposes. I tested a Buck 110 for a couple of months, and the only thing bad to come out of it was a few small chips in the blade, easily touched up. I also tried to loosen the blade, but the bolsters held up. No blade play.

Smith and Wesson, if you can call them a manufacturer! I had a swat auto that lasted about a year. couldn't hold an edge. live and learn...

I feel you. I have bought so many crappy knives over the years. Then, I found the wonderful wrold of Kershaw, Kabar, and Queen. Just like you said, live and learn. I use my crap knives if I need to really dig at something, And if it breaks, not that bad.

True Value's near me are phasing out their Case, Buck and Victorinox. Switching to just Leatherman, China Schrade and Frost.

Mine is to. They used to have Case, Schrade, and some old knives in a counter. They were bought out, and they sell frost and mtech! I asked the guy where they went, and he said they had to be thrown out!

I actually handpicked a Chinese made generic folder and it's quite a lot more solid than the S&W that a friend asked me to sharpen.

S&W sold the right to put it's name on knives. They make no knives. Everyone I've seen was made by "CHINA." Bought one to cut up old carpet. Lock failed. Fortunately I was wearing heavy leather gloves.

So blame S&W for foolishly putting the value of their brand in the hands of folks who know Americans just will buy junk.

my reasonably uninformed $0.02:

1) SOG: many of their designs look like ripoffs from Spyderco. i'd rather pay the innovators than the copiers.

2) BRKT: i've heard a few too many unsavoury things about BRKT's business practices and it's enough that i don't want to support that company. however, if i could pick up a few BRKT knives at decent prices, i probably would.

3) Chris Reeve Knives and Busse: ok, sure, they are very high quality and they have something of a cult status, but i just cannot justify dropping that kind of cabbage on a knife i intend to use (i don't have safe queens). especially when there are other makers with comparable products at more reasonable price points.

4) Anything with a Bear Grylls logo on it.

Gerber, Taylor cutlery, frost(cept for moras) etc are a given
SOG isnt too bad, some of their more expensive models are nice( i like my mini vulcan) but WAAAY overpriced.
Oh no this ones gonna piss people off
ESEE/RAT- I feel they are too streamline and that becker knife and tool makes better fixed blades for half the price.
And personally The owner of a company's shenanigans wouldn't prevent me from buying one of their knives. I would love to own a dpx folder even if ryp's dealings on the forum have been questionable. But customer service is a different story
Thats just my 2 pesos
