Knife Manufacturers You Avoid

Then I bought a Delica and my Spyderco addiction began.

Yup, the little Spydie seems to be a pretty effective gateway drug. It worked on me, too, and I'll bet a few others also got hooked by way of Delica (not a complaint).:D

Made the mistake of buying my dad a Gerber Paraframe one year for fathers day, it lasted about one summer before it completely feel apart on him.

Color me impressed. New to the forum but almost 100 posts in and this hasn't been reduced to name calling, best forum ever?

Happy to say Kershaw has only made the list due to personal preference, looks like I made a good choice! :D

Gerber, CRKT and Buck for sure. Bad experiences with those three. Few others I'm borderline with.

There's more brands I like than I dislike though. :D

I am a bit surprised about the negative vibes that still hang around CRKT. I do think that in the last 2 years they launched some really interesting knives, all designed by talented people.
For example, check the Onion Ripple and Eros. Or the wonderful Tribute.

I don't really avoid any, every manufacturer has their place in the market or they would have gone out of buisness. There are companies that I buy from more than others due to certain style/type of knife. But you buy what you need for the job, I have knives I paid less that $5 for and some that are worth Hundreds. Somedays you want to use a knife you can trash later and sometimes you want that knife that you know your great-grandchildren will enjoy someday.
I do agree that some companies had much better quality back in the 70's than now. Then again, some companies are selling quality product now that didn't exist in the 70's. It is what it is, everyone has their own taste for "steel".

-S&W
-Gerber
-Dark Ops
-TOPS
-Buck
-KA-BAR
-Microtech
-Mcusta
-SOG
-Al Mar
-CRKT
-Emerson
-Chris Reeve
-Queen Cutlery
-Wilson Tactical
-Puma
-Mission Knives

They have nothing in their line that I ever desired to own.

I avoid Gerber and SOG.

I absolutely will not buy anything that has a "made in china" stamp (aka flea market knives). I'm sure there are some decent knives made in China, but they won't find their way into my collection.

I try to stay away from Mantis knives and similar type companies - heavy on the "tacticool" marketing, light on quality.

Very recently, I have tried to maintain focus on USA made knives.

Like so many others on here GERBER and it hurts to say it. Gerber used to be a decent company and make some good quality stuff, and their U.S. They have just totally gone in the toilet bowl though and it sucks, I think their so far gone they can't get it back even if they try.

well you could say i avoid everyone but Spyderco. But that's just because I get an idea of what I want, look around, find that Spyderco has it, and choose that over anything else :P

Cold Steel, SOG, Gerber I avoid. I don't like how the SOG locks and blades hold up, and I don't like the CS ergonomics on most models or their mall ninja marketing. I also have certain morality issues with both companies. Gerber is just a sad story, I wish they would become what they once were again.

Benchmade and CRKT also are on the edge for me. Sometimes they have great models, some times they sell over priced and occasionally polished turds.

- SOG are semi-ok knives but they are very overpriced as many have already noted.
- Gerbers used to be pretty decent for the price but they got really cheap and crappy within the last couple years. I have a gerber that is probably 12 years old that I still use but it is an exception to the rule.
- Schrades have gone to crap too.
- Smith and Wesson: Knives are kinda junky and overpriced and I hate their politics!!

I bought a Zero Tolerance/Kershaw recently. The knife was spendy for a folder but it appears to be a pretty nice knife and it was made in the US. I totally agree with Foxx. Buy US and buy from the little guy whenever possible.

Insomuch as every manufacturer has some lame horses in the stable, I am not adverse to trying any brand, with the exception of Dork Ops.

I never even heard of Dark Ops until I read this thread.
After perusing their offerings, I think I would rather carry a screwdriver.
