Knife or Death

BTW, another thing about S2E4 that I found amusing, was the rules for the 3 ice blocks; that they had to be chopped in a specific order.

  • What was the whole point of that (other than to see if the contestants were listening)? It made no sense. The dimensions of the 3 ice blocks didn't really look dissimilar. They just arbitrarily decided that if you chop that block before this one, it's a penalty.
In S1's Dead Run, I'd assumed that in the hanging meat and ice block obstacle, that they HAD to chop through the ice first, before chopping the meat, specifically to see how much the ice damaged/dulled the edge before they cut the meat (something that they do regularly on Forged in Fire, i.e. test the durability, then test sharpness/edge retention).

When the one contestant (S1E3?) finally took the smart approach of cutting the meat before chopping the ice, my first thought was, "Wait... that was always an option? Why did everyone else chop the ice first?".

Likewise, in this season, they have the obstacles with the hanging ropes, 2x2s and rolled tatami. I could understand the rules dictating that you must chop the wood before the rope or tatami (softer edges might potentially dull/roll before reaching the targets that need to be sliced with a sharp edge).

But nope, you can chop those in whatever order you choose (and I commend the contestants who walk across to slice the rope first, before chopping the wood).

No, they choose to pick 3 similarly sized ice blocks, for the obstacle that must be chopped in a particular order. What was the point of that? Was the last block frozen from pure Fiji bottled water or something?

I also saw a preview of next week’s episode but didn’t see anyone resembling either Jonny or Austin. Although the initial line up flashed by very quickly, I’m fairly certain I could’ve still picked either one of them from the line up. Maybe by episode 6, one of them will show up.

Where'd you see the preview at? If I saw it, I could tell if it's mine or not. I hear that they are cutting one run from each episode. On Jeannie's episode, if you noticed, Scott Gossman of Gossman Knives, had his run cut. :( He was to Jeannie's right when they were walking in from the garage door.

The preview for this coming week, was shown 2 or 3 times during S2E4.

There was a very brief flash of the next group of contestants walking up. So brief, it was difficult to distinguish individual contestants, but I'm pretty sure I did NOT see you in the group.

The rest of the preview (one of those short, 15 second ads, as opposed to the 30 second ads), mostly focused on 3 guys, 1 of whom had a blade type I've seen before, but don't recall the name of.

It looked kind of like a billhook, with both sides sharpened, and 1 side has a big point sticking out, that looks ideal for smashing ice blocks and wooden crates.

P.S. Man... they'd better not cut your run. All of us would be pissed.

Jonny, if you are going to be cut, you will get a phone call. That's how I was notified of being cut. I was called a couple of weeks before the episode aired.

Thanks Scott, I hate that they didn't show your run, I was looking forward to it! I wonder what factors are determining which runs are cut? Jeannie spoke very highly of you! You probably don't remember me, but I stopped by your booth at Bladeshow a few years back and was inquiring about your Tusker!

The decision as I was told was by the executives in the network, most likely History channel executives. You know the ones who warm a chair with their ass and know nothing about knives and using them. Lol. I guess I wasn't dramatic enough. Hey I'm a 59 year old beat up man after years of labor work and not in the best shape physically. I did the best of my ability but I guess it wasn't good enough to air. I'm disappointed but have accepted it and have moved on. My knife was a 2 1/2 pound, 5/16" thick, 12 1/4" blade of S7 steel. It held up great with no edge damage. Just dulled it.
That Blade show was 2013 when I had a table. Met a lot of people that weekend. Sorry I can't remember seeing you. Plus that was 5 years ago. The memory isn't what it used to be. Lol

Jonny:

Strangely, I saw the previews for KoD's S2-E5 being aired during the episodes of Mountain Men which is on a different channel altogether (NatGeo) but His / NatGeo / Sci Ch / et al belong to one broadcasting outfit as a cluster.

Too bad that Gossman's run ended up on the cutting floor but what he stated makes total sense. Had he actually passed out or worse, managed to cut himself, would've probably made better sensationalized TV which would've most def been approved for keeping in

I can't fathom that either you or Austin will get cut but who knows?! Austin is a buff young buck and I'm sure he's TV eye-candy as they tend to like much fitter youngster vs older huffing-puffing-air gasping geezers :D If your background story is interesting enough, I
think that you will also stay in just because of diversity and also abilities. My 2 Cs!

They cut Scott Gossman's run??!!!! That's heresy right there.
Between that and editing out "Carothers" from MTM's interview, it pretty much sealed the fate of the show in my house. Overall I also found the descriptions of some of the contestants qualifications and skills a bit optimistic to say the least. I truly enjoyed watching Jo and MTM, but the rest of those episodes were draining at best.

Now, I will surely tune in for Jonny's run 'cuz, come on, an Asian redneck? That's good TV, but otherwise, I think I'd rather watch my toilet flush.
