Knife related projects - please share

I just finished - for the first time - wood scales for a SCHRADE SCHF38 using an old hickory axe handle just with hand tools. I decided to make it with hidden pins. It's a pain in the ... back, but when you do it for you, a lot of things change. Here it is next to my old Plumb hatchet.

PS Blade itself is changed, I increased the size of the small choil to be able to sharpen all blade.

And modified to a drop point. Waiting on some pin stock and some g10 liner to start the new handle.

cool peter. i would like to see the progress on that lockback. that's something i've always wanted to do.

Question related to adhesives, I've got my mycarta scales and g10 liner cut rough to size and I'm now ready to glue up to start final shaping. What glues and adhesives should I use? I see some say CA glue for the liner to the scale, and just as many say CA has no place on a knife. And it looks like I'm going to have to order either epoxy or acraglas as I can't find anything but 5 minute epoxy local. What preferences does everyone have?

Go to the knife makers discussion forums and do a search of adhesives. G Flex is favored by many so thats what I ended up with and recommend also.
I once used CA glue to bond G10 liners to micarta for a fire steel handle (the mating surfaces were sanded and degreased) and during the shaping on a belt sander they separated (due to the heat build up I suspect) so I re-glued 'em with G Flex and it's still holding strong.
I have used the G Flex on 5-6 handles so far and though I don't have the knives anymore I haven't heard any complaints of scales coming off from the folks that have them now.

Old Hickory's, are great to modify for so many reasons, really like that you did there!

email or pm me, i'd be happy to let you know what i'd use if you'd like, Myke's right though, the knifemaker discussion forums are a wealth of much greater knowledge freely sha

Yes KYenglish. First time ever, but I took the time to make them based on my hand and different grips.
Thank you for your comment

Thank you JK, nothing pretentious as wood, but I can keep it all day long in my hand now.

nice, thanks for the timeline pictures

and the answer is...slowly, i have some wood cut outs in place, next is trying to sand them to shape, afriad I'm not getting much time to work on it atm though, hopefully some more pictures soon

found this sucker in my glove box today, almost forgot about it, still too heavy to pocket carry for me but I tried toting it around for a while anyway, I still like the blade shape on this one

SAKs (wengers) are my favorites and that one looks great. For pocket carry I keep them in max 91mm though.
PS looking forward for your pics

so, the jk-ers around here are a pretty savvy bunch. what knife-related projects do you have going on?

i ask because i have a big list. John, remember that camp knife blank i got from you last spring? well, it's still in my project bucket! i have other knives that need handles. i have knives that need to be re-handled. i have knives that need sheaths, etc.

sharpening my girlfriend's kitchen knives has been on that same list for at least 6 months. last week, i finally took action. some may have seen the "Vermont bloodstone" (lol. that still gets me.) well, that's what i was doing.

she has the henckels eversharp knives. gosh, i can't stand the mini serrations. they smoosh food at best. i wanted to take those off and put on a nice clean, sharp edge. i started with her chef's knife.

before...

after (all i have is my iphone for a camera. really hard to get a closeup of edge. apparently, i lucked out with the above pic.) ...

sharp enough...

i like to see what other folks are doing. gives me some inspiration/motivation. so, like i said, what you got going on?

Nice work!!! It looks MUCH better now! I only have one of those Eversharp knives, but it's a bread knife, so on top of the micro serrations, the edge is scalloped too. That doesn't lend itself to re-grinding too well without losing a lot of thinness of the current grind, so only when it gets REALLY dull will I bother with it.

I found myself sharpenening almost all of my kitchen knives yesterday:

So, I became a grinder monkey for a while this afternoon. I found that most all of my EDC rotation needed a good sharpening, and while I was at it, SWMBO asked if I could sharpen the kitchen knives (that she uses)? So by the time it was all said and done, this happened.

Yeah. 3. Dozen. Knives!!!

AUS6. AUS 8. 440C. Unknown stainlesses. Mod 52100. O1. A2. Unknown Carbon (RichardJ necker). S35VN. M390. 154CM. CPM M4. CPM S110V. ELMAX. D2. MAXAMET.

Holy cow!!! :D

To put it into perspective, the top one has a 13.5" blade. They'll all easily shave now, some better than others. I love the edge 154CM takes! Thank God for the 1x30" bench top grinder!!! Can you imagine having to do all these by hand?!?!?! :barf: :barf: :barf:

The aforementioned current EDC rotation.

Note the two JK's at the bottom left of the first picture. Edges are all shiny and mirrored now! :D

Working it out, may have to do something with the blade though, more I look at it the more narly it seems ;)

So I made my own locking pin because the old one was rusted and broken

16142508_10155761670499778_6262259235380948529_n.jpg

but I wasn't confident in the brass to have enough spring to retain it's shape over use so I went and made a new one

Build so far looks okay but the locking retenton on it is a bear, definitleya 2 hand opener and you have to put your oen ahnd into the "fireing line" of the blade to reall close it, may have to pull it back apart and readjust

Interesting rebuild there Pete.
I'm racking my brain trying to think of a way to reduce the spring tension.
A smaller diameter spring?Apply a little heat?Make it longer?
Hmmm.
