Knife you could rely on for survival

How does 420j respond to sock-sheathing?

Well, it is highly rust resistant. ;)
That is why it is not a bad choice for knife handle liners.

It is not a great choice for blade material though, unless one is trying to make or buy a cheap dive knife.
It is okay for that purpose.

I can't wait for the "unpicking" by people who think 420J is a second-rate steel (fit for wall hangers no less, honest!)... I'd love to see their totally honest side by side between 420J and INFI...

Rusty 5" handle-heavy nail files are Survival Knives: Let's keep that in mind. As the owner of Esee knives said: 90% of this industry is bullshit. Therefore, logically... Go for the Rambo 10" licensed copy knife made in 420J, and add to it a $10 Marbles 10" bowie sheath (if you can improve the retaining strap)... Hey, it can even unscrew flat head and phillips screws: What special thing did a Mora do for you lately?...

If I was stuck somewhere boonies-like and only had a 420J blade with me, I'd be glad I had it.
But if could choose there are much better options. By better I mean better edge holding without being much harder to sharpen or maintain an edge, and without being more prone to edge damage.

I think my old outdoorsman, with it's black leather sheath, would be a welcome companion.

I only have one knife in 420J. A Delica with Superblue sandwiched between two layers of it.

Seriously, a rambo knife? No way 420J can hang with INFI. You ever seen the cladding of Spyderco's laminated Superblue? The 420J is so soft it scratches if you look at it too hard. The owner of esee? Come on now, you can do better than that. Now you're regurgitating again. Members of BF, PLEASE don't take advice from this guy ↑, doesn't know what he's talking about!!!

You can set up straw men until the cows come home, mon brave, but they will still merely be pathetic fallacies.

You will never find me arguing in favour of a BK2 or ESEE 5, so your words are, as ever, pointless and without meaning. However, if you think that a sharpened pry bar made from 1095 will suffer particularly in wet conditions for several months at a time, then I suggest you talk to your doctor about increasing your medication. Jeff Randall, irrelevant though he may be, detests the ESEE 5, by the way, referring to it as a ‘damn boat anchor’. He correctly dismisses the majority of ‘survival’ knives as marketing bullshit. You are the only one who finds this remarkable; the rest of us worked it out by ourselves.

A bientôt.

If you take him seriously and ask im to clarify, does not respond. 420j2 as a laminate imo takes scratches less easily than does sus310.

I’m pretty sure someone has chopped through 420j2 with an infi blade, just can’t remember where.
