Knifemakers Christmas season gift exchange!

I understand and honestly I have slowed to a crawl on my progress for the same reasons, to make it to the best of my ability. With that said, and not to compare you to a 10 year old, but I just had a conversation with my daughter about how it doesn't matter what you give as much as the time or thought you put into it (the bad tie conversation). Now, was I disappointed when I heard the hawk was received by someone else? Yea, just a bit...I read it and said to my girlfriend "Aw, man, I didn't get the hawk" :D But hey, if you think about it this way, if Scott, Stacy or any of the other more experienced makers wanted a show knife, they'd just make it for themselves. We all get what we get and as long as the maker put his time and energy into it, I don't care if it's a barely sharp chunk of steel with a pine slab stuck on the end. I would treasure it as another life memory and next year I hope we can organize this again.

Awww Erik, that makes me feel good that you really wanted the hawk, maybe we could do a trade sometime:D--Butch

Well what a surprise, it just arrived here today! :)

It's every bit as cool as it looked in the pictures you took of it.
I'll post a pic or two of it here this weekend when I have some
light.

It's very light and comfortable in the hand. I'm especially fond of integrals too! :D

I hope it does you well Dan =) Again my apologies for no sheath. Hopefully I'll learn to make those this next year =D

On one hand I though it was kind of ironic that after meeting you at the ABS hammerin in vermont and getting that lectroetch machine from you there, that your name showed up in the mail as the recipient of my knife. You also get the first knife marked using that lectroetch machine after I got it running too =)

Wow! The first professionally marked Mercier knife. When Justin becomes famous, that knife will be worth a fortune!

Justin,
Are you happy with your new stencils, as far as quality of the etch is concerned? My stencils are supposed to arrive tomorrow.

The stencils I got from TUS are great, very clean crisp etch, even on the very small details.

Don't know if I'll ever get famous LOL, but thanks for the vote of confidence =) Right now I just hope in 2 or 3 years I might be able to try for a JS.

I'm glad to hear that you're pleased with them. I see that you're xmas knife was a hit. Congrats!

I ordered my stencils from TUS also. I remembered how you said that they were larger than you were expecting, so I was very careful about the actual size mine were going to be. I order two different sizes actually. Two slightly larger stencils and three smaller ones all on the same sheet. I'm eager to get them. My old stenciling process sucked!

The original stencil being larger than I expected was entirely my fault, not that of TUS. The 2nd smaller stencil I took careful measurements to make sure it was exactly .5 inches in total length before I sent the artwork.

That said the larger size stencils are exactly the size I need for marking other forged pieces of work however, like fireplace tools and the like. I was originally trying to order just one stencil midway between the sizes I /thought/ I would need, but turns out the larger sized one needed to be smaller anyways, and the mid sized one I ordered first was perfect for the large size. That was all entirely my own fault for mis-judging size of the stencil based on letter height.

photos up. northwest patch style utility. O1, 1/8 inch, osage orange, all rounded and rounded and smoothed. really nice to hold.

follow linx for bigger pix, as usual.

My stencils came! My stencils came! My stencils came! It doesn't take much to get a knifemaker excited.;)

Just a quick update...I'm working on the handle now as the blade is almost finished. Barring any real major catastrophes, this knife is due to end up with it's new owner right on time.

This has been good learning experience for me. I'm doing my best work with the skills I have and having to try to work through the problems I'm encountering every step of the way. It helps me appreciate all the hard work that goes into making any knife, from the simple to the extremely exravagant. Christmas is going to be that much more exciting this year for our little group! Thanks to all involved! -Matt-

Christof, I like that knife. I love osage orange (Bois d'arc) wood and I like the way Matt described it, like an old flannel shirt.....comfortable.

i've been liking the wood a lot, it's from phil patton, too.

I really like doing the rustic using knife thing right now. Flannel shirt is a pretty cool description.

I'm waiting for it to arrive where it's going :)

I'd be tickled to get that knife. Of course it would cause me to have to find a longbow or selfbow out of the same wood.....might get pricy before it's over.

I haven't seen a knife yet I wouldn't be thrilled to get.

Waiting to see what I get is nearly as bad as waiting for Christmas when I was a kid. I can't wait to get home each day to check this thread for new pictures and to see if the postman brought anything. This has been a lot of fun.

We haven't heard from Viljo Marrandi in this thread since before I mailed out the letters.

Viljo,
I do hope that you've received your letter. Did you?

Man, tomorrow is shop day. Did my Christmas shopping today, so I handle it up, shape, pin and then onto the sheath! I'm on the downhill side now, so hopefully my recipient will see it by the 20th or so.

what's worse is that if any of the girls in the household beat me to the mail they will MAKE ME WAIT TILL CHRISTMAS to open it.

Finished the sheath today so it's ready to be mailed. This will be my fourth completed knife and first sheath so the workmanship isn't on the same level as most on the forum but I'm proud of it anyway.

That and giving it away is the good part. I am sure it is a great knife. I think we all dug down a bit a found a bit of extra pride to put in our gifts. I am sure it will be well received
