Knifemakers Christmas season gift exchange!

Personaly i would never ship a knife not sharp unless it was a safe queen and the customer requested it not sharpened after all we are supposed to be knifemakers and would you buy a knife from a store if it was not sharp? That's just my thought on it.

Bob

I thought about doing the same thing Scott, and then just went ahead and put a 22 degree edge on it, figured if he wanted it steeper or wider it wouldn't be much trouble from there. Sucks not bein able to ask the new owner questions!....
Matt

i very deliberately put the primary bevel on but stopped just short of a burr. there's a reason, which will become clear once ########## receives it.

I sharpened it! For a knifemaker, I suck at sharpening. It's shaves hair and slices through paper with ease though. I hope %%%%%%%% likes it! I'm shipping it out tomorrow.

Well, there was a change of plans... my wife said I should give a full size monosteel knife vs a small-sized cable knife.

So it went out today. Ought to arrive Friday or Saturday!

I'm off to ship this out! It's done. I posted a few photos of the mammoth ivory and mammoth bone that I used. The bone is the smaller pieces. It was really ugly stuff when I started. I included a small piece of the bone and ivory with the knife and sheath for the receiver. I hope that he enjoys the knife as much as I enjoyed making it.

Alright, finished, polished and boxed. Goes out tomorrow! I really hope this lives up to *********'s expectations... :D Blade is ATS-34, flat ground, tulip scales and stainless pins. OAL...hmmm, forgot to measure but around 5" to 6". Sheath is 8-9 oz vegetable tanned shoulders dyed medium saddle brown and handstitched.

both of those are great!

this is getting fun to watch. how many people have received so far?

Okay, I'm back from shipping the knife. Someone will be getting a knife on Tuesday, December 18th.

Eric,
I like that style of knife a lot! I used to carry a knife like that deer hunting. All my hunting buddies thought it was a weird design, until I talked one of them into using it to field dress their deer. They all had Kmart or Walmart style (read cheap here) knives that had the classic shape and look, with really wide blades. Once they realized that a shorter knife, that was really sharp and would hold the edge would make field dressing a lot easier, I was able to sell of few of them.

Did I say that I really like that design a lot?

Thanks, Scott! That means a lot to me! It's a great little knife and I had no hard design done to knock this one out. Just grabbed some steel and started profiling. It's truly a one of a kind! It's a slicer, too. Have two band aids to prove it. New lesson learned: finish all your hand sanding prior to grinding the primary edge. I knew better, just got excited and jumped the gun. As long as the recipient doesn't have too big of hands, it will fit nicely in the palm. Thanks again for this great idea!

Well, I finished the knife today! Now the stress level at my house can return to normal! (My wife thinks I obsess too much!:D) Now on to the sheath, which my local leather guy is going to stich up for me, and it should be shipped out by next Tuesday or Wednesday.

My father, a machinist and tool and die maker for almost 40 years, paid me a big compliment today, when he said, "Son, I think you are starting to get the hang of it!" :)

I was going to post pics, but I'm not sure if I should, or if I should let ########## post them himself when he gets the knife! :p -Matt-

Compliments from fathers are awesome. Congrats!

You're making us wait. That is so cruel. But fun too!
