Knifetests.com-whats YOUR opinion

I encourage Noss to keep doing them. Don't be such a party pooper. Why appoint yourself as the cyber censor who dropped in from outer space. I think you are way too uptight about this.
When noss4 folds up his circus tents and steps down from his soapbox, then i will consider not voicing my opinion about his hype, hypocrisy and stunts. Until then i will continue to expose him for what he really is.

Precisely. Responsible knife usage? Or stunts? Everyone gets to pick.

No one here is saying folks don't have choice.

Some, like Karda, are simply pointing out that the "man, he really beat the crap out of that one" mentality misses a bigger picture about knife collecting and knife usage.

Personally I have ones that are safe queens and others I use and then still other ones I use very hard in the field. Different knives for different uses.

I wouldn't use a slip joint to baton with and expect it to hold up because that would just be unrealistic. ;)

I have used some supposably tough knives in the field over the years and sadly broke them one way or another. I won't go into what knives they were because I won't bash them.

They aren't any of that..... ;)

They are basic, very simple tests done for informational purposes.

Don't even need a high IQ to figure that out.

To be sure: ONLY in your own mind.

Nothing wrong with hating. Hating is a natural and easy human flaw. We all do it.

But a couple of you guys are sanctimonious and downright pompous; even going so far as to check out someone else's "credentials" and background in the Forums' history. Weird and creepy.

I agree the tests are very controversial and can be seen as totally unscientific or misleading. But I also agree that real world situations are also not scientific-- they are chaotic and random.

So what difference does it make? None, really.

nevermind... I don't want to read the four-page reply that goes nowhere...

O.K. guys ... how about a big, group hug, then we all gather 'round the campfire for a few choruses of "Kum Bay Ya"? :)

Basic and simple...I'll give you that.
TESTS?......Not even the slightest resemblance to a test.
Informational purposes.....yeah, rrrrright....LOL.
They are Youtube antics, done to give the great hockey puck the attention he craves so badly, and his cronies cream all over themselves to give it to him.

Don't even need a high IQ to figure that out.

Knifetests is an entertaining and informative site. If you dont like it, dont go. Yes the tests are unscientific. So is my test of dropping my kitchen knife point first onto concrete, but its something I want my kitchen knife to survive, because accidents happen. This is a home made kitchen knife, not all of them. The blade is M2, 1/16" thick, 64-66 HRc, 5" blade. If this kitchen knife can take batoning with a hammer, then so should any knife claimed to be for rough use.

A little progress has been made - at least in the threads now there is generally agreement that the videos (I would not call them a test) are unscientific - which means they are not repeatable. Which really means you don't learn much from them. This was not the case in the early threads.

Watch all the silly videos on youtube you want, but that don't mean I can't laugh my a$$ off or post a grain of salt or two after you come on here and post "Dang, that knife is one tough strong SOB" solely based on watching a video some doofy character breaking a knife by bashing on it willy nilly with a steel hammer!

And Nossy, someone told me about your whiney little comments in your last video. Why are you afraid to say what you have to say here to my face? Defend your videos and all the 12 seconds of thought that you could muster while coming up with your methodology! :D

I guess it's a lot easier for you to make your cry-baby little comments in your silly video because you know you don't stand a chance when it comes to actually knowing what the heck you are talking about. :p

And hey you genius, I almost fell out of my chair when I saw you couldn't figure out how to pronounce broos - for future reference broos is pronounced "brooooooooooooooos". If you can't figure that out pm me and I'll recommend you a remedial 6th grade english teacher to help you get it right. And thanks for the compliment on my excellent avatar pic - I, unlike you, am not afraid to show my face.

I don't think Broos or noss4 have any testing videos. The Great Hockey Mask has anonymous stunts. Broos is too smart to dish up such stuff.

Funny that TGHM named Broos in a video. I guess intelligent posts like the following get under his skin.

It is often not easy reading, but anyone with a little technical acumen can do some searching & reading into just how little is learned by randomly hitting a small piece of really hard steel with larger piece of work-hardened and irregularly shaped steel (I recall they make no attempt to ever face the hammer or regulate the blows or the impact locations) until the small piece breaks. Hardened steel on hardened steel impacts leads to immense local stresses due to the resistance of the hard steel to deformation and the small area of impact.

Heck, do some reading on the charpy test (scientific toughness) and you will get some idea - this is an exacting ASTM test and still experts argue over exactly what the results tell you. And I laugh uproariously at any attempt to compare the videos with real destructive tests done by engineers who know what they are doing.

What point are you trying to make? I am thinking your assertion is that one has to do something stupid in order to comment on stupidity. Yeah, great point there.

Point? Put your time and money where your writing is.

If you promulgate that the tests of NOSS4 are "stupid" (a purely subjective term, BTW, without proper supportive substative facts), then perhaps by some chance you should procure similar knives as "tested" by NOSS4, run them through your "scientific tests", and do so openly via videos.

Otherwise, your assertions of "stupidity" are merely unsubstantiated allegations.

So, where are your tests of what you think are tasks that a knife should be able to perform. Hopefully these "scientific tests" of yours consist of more than spreading peanut butter, though admittedly some knives aren't adept at such tasks.

Is this going on again? Bleh. Who wants my opinion (for the 1000th time)?

The knives Noss tests (breaks, does stunts with, however you wanna look at it) are his to do it with. He's either purchased them himself, had them donated by people wanting him to beat on 'em, or sent to him by the makers themselves. As such, he's free to do with them as he pleases. He's not sneaking into your bedrooms at night and taking them from under your mattresses.

As far as the tests themselves, I enjoy watching them. Do they effect my purchases? No. Do I think they have validity for some? Sure. You can bitch and moan all you want that knives are only for cutting, but under that assumption, what's the point in a 1/4" knife that's been given crappy geometry and a HT well below it's optimum level for edge retention? Personally, I carry thin knives that wouldn't hold up to any of what Noss does. That said, the makers of the knives I actually carry don't claim that they are the toughest knives in the world.

As far as this thread, it's going just like the rest. Insults abound. Here's an idea to those who think Noss's tests are the beginning of the Apocalypse or whatever. Try making your arguments without calling those of us who don't agree with you "cronies" and "fanboys". If you can express your opinions and expect them to be respected, then you should show the same courtesy to those with opposing views. Heck, you could actually try discussing the topic without throwing out "Great Hockey Mask" and other such kindergarten name calling as well, but I assume that's asking a bit much.

A. If you promulgate that the tests of NOSS4 are "stupid" (a purely subjective term, BTW, without proper supportive substative facts), then perhaps by some chance you should procure similar knives as "tested" by NOSS4, run them through your "scientific tests", and do so openly via videos.

B. Otherwise, your assertions of "stupidity" are merely unsubstantiated allegations.

I'm sorry, but logically, part B does not follow from part A. What you have there is called a non sequitur. Your conclusion does not depend upon the conditions you assert in the earlier portion.

If you want to debate the term stupid in terms of substantive information, well isn't that what Broos has been doing all along? Noting with factual information the unreliability of effects?

So again, your point is that one is not qualified to comment on videos, unless they already have shot some of their own videos? Can't you figure out what a lame and nonsensical argument that is when it comes to science?

And I hate to tell you, but in science there is no such thing as an "unsubstantiated allegations" when it comes to figuring out how and why things happen.

Why don't you tell me where I have posted something that is incorrect? Or better yet, tell us exactly what semi-randomly smashing a knife with a steel hammer tells us.

And btw, many moons ago, I did post with some suggestions on how to make the video more repeatable. To no avail, I'm sure.

There goes my career as a movie critic. Sadly, I've never made a feature film. :(

Usual Condescending Attitude.

That there is a two way street, although it is nice to see that the noss fans have learned some manners and civility. Predominately they are the first to insult.

I'm not sure I take your meaning. Feel free to elaborate. (You're also welcome to do so via PM or a more appropriate forum.)

From what I've seen, that's not the case. Look back through this thread and count the personal insults up, and you'll see who's winning that game.

As for the "noss fans" learning some manners and civility. This is another case of you taking everyone who doesn't agree with your view and grouping them into a a big tent of idiot fanboys. Someone having a different opinion than yourself doesn't make them a "noss fan". It makes them an individual that doesn't share your (very strong) feelings on the subject. If you feel name calling and dividing forum members into 2 easily defined groups is the only way to express your argument, then that paints a broader picture of you than those you choose to do it to.
