Knives aside, what are your other hobbies??

we're supposed to have other hobbies besides knives?!?

well, I am half knife nut and half car nut. This be my VW:

It's had a bit of suspension work done (springs, sway bar, real wheels and tires), and engine and drivetrain work (chip, intake, exhaust sort of, motor mount insert, short shifter) and a few select cosmetic goodies that make it look nice. I occasionally like to race it:

here's me queuing up for an SCCA Autocross in Kinston, NC.

I also just love automotive photography, even though I'm kinda crap at it.

I'm a writer (or trying to be!) and run my own automotive editorial website/blog thing. I'm taking a job soon writing for a UK-based car website, which will be interesting from North Carolina.

my website can be found at www.tehcarblogz.com

I used to really enjoy road bike riding but it sort of lost it's appeal. Plus, I had to sell my Cannondale road bike a few months ago due to desperately needing the money.

edit, almost forgot: Zombie killing.

This IS an interesting thread......
.....DDD - I know from your books that you did a lot of Oceanography
related work, but what are your hobbies?

Peter

Here are some pictures of what filled my life outdoors
during my younger years -
Nature photography, on land and underwater....

My nature photography led to the publishing of my first 17 books....

My major diving days were between 1967-1973. I used a Nikon F with a
high-eye view finder, an Al Giddings metal housing and a powerful u/w strobe,
left for me by a National Geographic team that I assisted during one of their
Red Sea expeditions....
At first I could only afford to shoot, develop and print my own
black & white images.

Ah, those were amazing days...

See two b&w pictures from those days...

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

The National Geographic team also left me hundreds of fresh rolls of the
fantastic Kodachome ISO 25 tranceparancies which were like a gift from
heaven as I really could not afford shooting color at the time.

Here are some of the my Red Sea underwater images taken during the
years 1968-1972, while I was completing my Ph.D. in Marine Biology...

All the best,

And then, in 1973, when I lifted my head out of the amazing waters of the Red Sea,
I discovered the (no words to describe it...) world of wild flowers...

All the best,

Sweet!! What is the one on the right? Fancy wood. Is it a real sidelock? My dad had a couple of other older guns, but they are pistols. A "black army" WW1 vinatge 1911, a couple of top break Smith Hammerless models, a nickel .380 Colt Pocket Auto, an old hot rodded target version Smith K-22, etc. He also still has the little Stevens .410 double that I learned to shoot on. In its day it was a bargain gun, but still a neat little piece of firearms history. There wasn't really much in the way of an American "budget" double gun after WW2, but before that, you could probably buy a gun like this from the Sears catalog.

Joe it's a Polli box lock with side plates set up for sporting clays.

On another note I recieved a parcel today and I was quite pleased to open it up and find a copy of Robert Anderson's Great Rams And Great Ram Hunters ll in the Parcel I was more pleased to see a pic of me in his book. I am the one recieveing man love from my good friend and long time hunting partner Brown Delozier of Texas. It is an honor for me to be in a book with such high company and I am not worthy but tickled to show my kids. I have made some magazines but this is the first book I have gotten in . I had no idea about this and it was a suprise.

even though i love to go hiking, camping, and biking i do not get to go enough to call it a hobby.

most of my free time is spent reading fiction. this is a great hobby because it doesn't cost me anything, the library pays for it all:p during the summer months you can probably bet i will be watching baseball. i get the mlb premium subscription every year so i can try and keep up with it all.

i shamefully must admit i collect baseball cards. yes i know it is nothing more than cardboard but it is something my dad and me have always done together. i could buy a ton of knives it i didn't split half of my fun money on these things:foot::) my collection is made up solely of rookie cards.

judging by this pic you can tell photography is not on my hobby list:D

Hey Joe, You got a story to go along with the cape buffalo photo? I'd sure love to hear something about that hunt.

Ray I shot that bull in the Selous in Tanzania a few years ago. I was useing a .470 Nitro double rifle loaded with woodleigh soft and solids. We had crawled up on this old boy at a watering hole he was by himself. At about 40 yards I just stood up he looked at me like Robert Ruark say's As if I owed him money and then actually trotted right toward me shaking his head in no way a charge but kinda like I am old and grumpy leave me alone. At about 30 to 35 yards he realized I wasn't going anywhere and stepped to his left I shot him on the point of his right shoulder with a 500 grain soft point he spun into it and I shot him in the left shoulder with a solid thats what doubles are good for fast shooting ... He ran away pretty broken down I broke the gun threw two more solids and gave him two more raking shots in the side. At about 60 to 70 yards or so there was brush and right before he went down. I ran up behind him as he tried to get up and put 2 more by his spine and he just collapded forward as you see in the first pic with his legs folded under due to the broken shoulders. I have shot 5 of these and this one took the most abuse of any. I have killed them clean with one shot from a .375 but I believe this bull got his adrenaline up and was old and pissed off to begin with. Of the five this was and is my best one and I will always remember him .. Thanks for asking.

Joe, I knew there would be a good story to go along with this bull. Thanks a lot for sharing it! So what do you do with it afterwards? Did you have this old boys head mounted? From what I've been able to see about your adventures you've been living your dream........

Ray his head is on my fireplace along with another cape buffalo above him. I have been fortunate and started hunting and fishing very young. Been to Africa and Asia and most places inbetween but to tell ya the truth a few months ago I was sitting on the side of a mountain in Alaska getting snowed on and it came to me that my time and money would be better spent on my kids do not get me wrong I spend alot of time with them but between work and my love of the outdoors I am quite busy. So I am slowing down and doing more activities with my kids. Like I said I have been very fortunate but when the desire for the hunt starts to let up it is time to turn the page. Don't get me wrong my love for the outdoors will never quit and hopefully My little girls will want to share the outdoors with me. They are doing great so far and I will never quit chaseing the whitetails in my backyard.
